This song was a sea shanty, a very rhythmic, repetitive melody used by sailors to help them perform some task requiring unison or combined work - such as hauling up an anchor, or raising or lowering sails, or opening up gunports and running out the guns (cannons) in preparation for firing. The song lyrics were originally references to punishments that could be used on a sailor found guilty of being drunk on duty - a very serious infraction when the safety of the entire ship and crew might be dependent on everyone being able to do their job at very short notice. For example, "put him in a longboat until he's sober" sounds fairly tame, until you remember that it's basically a rowboat on the open ocean, being towed by a much larger ship, the occupant may well be suffering from a hangover, and generally has no food, water, or protection from the elements - and might be stuck there for several days. "The captain's daughter" was the nickname of a whip used to give a sailor lashes. So "put him into bed with the captain's daughter" meant literally to whip someone until they couldn't move out of bed. As the song evolved, some of the lyrics became more and more extreme (and less attached to reality), up to and including references to rather bloodily killing the sailor found "in his cups". There are lyrics that talk about leaving a sailor in the bilge (the lower, most disgusting part of a sailing ship) until he died of starvation, his body decomposed, and he was only a skeleton - which was then run up the flagpole as the Jolly Roger! So, while most of the verses you hear sung these days are relatively nondescript (I sang it in elementary school music class, with lyrics appropriate for a pre-teen child), the song does have a fairly dark history.

Thank you for the background and knowledge Badger! This is what I preach a lot in my videos. It’s all about teaching each other 😊. I guess the information I found about the song was slight incorrect. I thought it was different scenarios on how to sober up a drunken sailor, however it’s not and more so, don’t get the sailor drunk. Wow a very dark background. I feel like all children or all sea shanty songs have a dark background

They went with the traditional lyrics here, and Geoff wrote the new bridge...I like to think the song was how the pirates _thought_ they sounded but the epilogue was how they _actually_ sounded. XD Great reaction!

By far my favorite part was Ceasar throwing it back lmao it was so unexpected and I am surprised how few reactors actually say something about it 😂😂

Yeah literally 😂. That caught my attention straight away and I loved it 😅. Odd no other reactors points it out 🤷🏾♂️

The things mentioned are all ways to punish a drunk on board, all of them are possibly fatal! The Captain's Daughter is a whip! Being "Put to bed" is a slang term for killed. Long boats towed after the ship often sank from the wakes. Shaved with a rusty razor cold lead to infection and tetanus, if not the direct death of "Slitting their Gizzard". They mean him NO good, this Scurvy Crew!

Oh really ?! I thought it was about ways of sobering up a drunken sailor. Hmm 🤔 maybe I heard/read the wrong info

I think this is equally as awesome as Nothing Else Matters and Valhalla Calling. The difference is, those 2 are “serious” and this one is “fun”. Just as good, but totally different vibe.

I get what you mean. The energy of this cover is completely different from the previous ones. Thanks for letting me see that 😊

It was great watching you react to this. In a lot of ways this topped all the others you mentioned-musically I think more innovative-that bass line alone is a work of art, and totally unexpected for this song. And I bet the guys laughed their butts off when they were working out the bits they would be doing for the video.

Aww thank you 😊. The song and video is wholesome and I agree. I bet they just had such a good time recording this

Geoff has taken on a number of repetitive songs lately, and his go-to change up has become adding a bridge. On his his one, the Carve his heart out (while brandishing a spoon) is a reference to an Alan Rickman line in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. When I first saw this on Patreon, I laughed so hard at that and Eli’s line that I started a nosebleed!
@KaireemReactions Жыл бұрын
Oh cool. So they explain more on their patreon. Makes sense. They do reference it a lot. Very clever. No way 😅 be careful
