Geoff King of bridges rises again with a fantastic bridge in this one.
@DavideBaroni Жыл бұрын
Ok, it's not a musical thing, but... Geoff's line: "I'm gonna carve his heart out" while holding a wooden spoon is a tribute to an Alan Rickman's line in "Robin Hood" 😁. And when Eli says "...And we should make him listen to Voiceplay while we do it!", Bucky, the Drunken Sailor, makes a gesture as "saying NO!"... then José says "You're a monster!" and Bucky agrees with another hand gesture. As if the REAL "monstrous thing" weren't to have his heart carved out with a wooden spoon, but to have to listen to Voiceplay! What an hilarious moment of self-deprecation, and what an attention to the details of communication. Not many reactors noticed Bucky's hand gesture... 🙂😉 Loved your reaction and break down, as always. Thank you very much, it's good value added, for me. 🙂 See you next time! PS: When there's the half-time part, and they get back to the fast rhythm while Eli holds descending notes throughout... Exactly at 5'00 in your video. I have the clear feeling that that chord progression is nothing else than a so called "Andalusian Cadence", which I was kinda surprised to hear here. Can you confirm that? 🙂
@EthanDrewMusic Жыл бұрын
Yes, that is an Andalusian cadence! It was a magnificent touch, and I don’t know why I didn’t mention it. Good call-out!

I'm so glad you mentioned Bucky's hand gesture because as many times as I've watched this video, I had never noticed it. This is why I love watching reactions, and reading the comments in them -- I always learn something new!

I said it several times before: with VoicePlay and Geoff, expect the unexpected!!! They will NEVER go in the direction you believe before pressing that play button😂😂😂 And slaying the music in their usual supercreative and talented way, always in full excellency!

Forgot to mention that Matthew Buckner aka Bucky is an old member back in the 4:2:Five era. He is also the one who choreographed Geoffs Monster Mash. Nowadays he works mainly as a voice actor. Geoff wrote a new bridge, as he done a lot of lately. According to Geoff, that doll from Hell as the fans called it at the premiere, is Clara and she has feelings... The Captain's daughter is a whip used for punishment.

Geoff arranged this and wrote the bridge. He just doesn't "do" repetitive, and the original song (much as I like it) is very repetitive. This version? I love it!

Of course I'll drop you a comment. Your reaction was so worthwhile - this piece is just so much fun. Analysis opens doors to what VoicePlay is doing to get the effects. The whole thing is amazing and as often as I've heard it since they dropped this, I never tire of it, it makes me laugh. Love Geoff threatening to carve Bucky's heart out - with a wooden spoon. Eli doing his British accent when Geoff did the line that belonged to Alan Rickman in Robin Hood. Cesar helping Jose shave his belly with a rusty razor. Layne doing what only he can do. Scowl while beatboxing when Jose sank his longboat. If I remember correctly, the augmented chords that I played on the piano (piano's been in storage for several years) my C chord was G#, C and E pattern with the 7th added a Bb.

I liked Layne's version of an Irish hand drum. Did you note the bouncing and swaying of the camera to imitate the ship's movement with the waves?

Speaking as someone who has played bodhran for 30 years….lol, yah. No bodhran ever sounded like that. His syncopation skills are off the hook. I know this song is a hornpipe. They’ve sped it up well beyond the limits you usually hear hornpipes done, but it’s a hornpipe. If I just pick up my drum and play along, I can find the “real” rhythm. But I’ll be damned if I can count it…Layne’s beat is so aggressive and so persuasive and so syncopated that he throws my count. That’s doesn’t happen to me. Ever. It amazes me that he can trip me up so completely and hide the feel of the hornpipe so completely

Augmented chord is a raised fifth. (in D : D - F# - A#)

🍩 OK, this is a great cover (totally Voiceplay's made). It's funny, it's speedy, it's energetic.... but your reaction completed the whole thing. I do not know if I laughed more with the song itself or with the faces you made while reacting !!! A blast.

Thanks so much for a great reaction analysis! It’s always good to hear your breakdowns. But I’m also pretty amazed at how you can just pick out the notes they’re using without needing to plunk it out on a keyboard.

One thing that i think missed for me with the shanty boom that ran through for a bit. These were work songs, they were meant to co-ordinate people pulling. If they knew they were subverting the point of the song its fine, but i dont know how many people understood the point when they changed it.

When you were talking about the chromatic line downwards of Geoff's subharmonics there is a small error. You said: E1, E flat 1, D sharp 1 and D1. But Eb1 and D#1 are an 🤔enharmonic switch of the same note. So if we're talking about 4 notes chromatically. He either starts at a F1 or ends at a C#1. I don't know which , but considering the Key of Dminor, he most likely ends on D1 and starts at F1.
@EthanDrewMusic Жыл бұрын
So, after further review, it appears we are both incorrect. The subharmonics started on an F1, the next one is an E1, then he ends on a D1. Even people with perfect pitch start to struggle a bit when the pitches are extreme highs/lows, and are that close in proximity to each other. Side note, when I say Eb/D#, or Bb/A#, I am including both names for the same note for those who are less informed about music to simplify things. I hope that clarifies things!
