Each part I struggled with in a different way. Just adding time travel fixed one of my problems.

If you want to break the rules, firest you must master them perfectly. The general rules allow for a balance in the story. Breaking these rules means finding a balance without these crutches. That is to say, you have to be aware (an master) of all the elements that balance your story to adjust them.

Rules are overrated. Plenty of TV and movies follow the rules, and they are still not worth watching.

Truby would say using beats is not the problem. The problem is using beats in a cliched or unimaginative way. I think rules are pretty neutral. It's how they are used (or not used) that matters.

IMO Maverick worked so well because it didn't break the rules. It was a sequel that repackaged the original in an era where studios are trying too hard to "re-imagine" things, or flat out crowbar agendas. It wasn't trying too hard to be different, just to be different. It plucked on the right nostalgic strings and call backs.

Unfortunately it not only didn’t break the rules, it did nothing new. It basically repeated the original film. Thoroughly disappointing, unoriginal waste of time.

Break the rules as long as the female character always wins the argument / fight with the male character

But. It seems like 'voice' is increasingly equated with forced edginess and obnoxiousness...
