Great video, but spoilt a bit by the music drowning out the words. The words are far more important and more valuable than the music. Music makes sense over the shots where we're just watching an operation being carried out with no chat, but please don't drown out the talking. We want to hear what you're saying - because that's the good bit!

The first thing I always check on any full bike service is the hangar alignment. Nothing worse than aligning gears only to find you’ve got to wait for a hangar on a long lead time, or worse there is paint damage on a bent steel frame hangar. Great video

WTH! That is a steal! The next time I’m on work visit to the UK, I’ll remember to bring all my bikes. My LBS here in NorCal charged me $500 for this service, and I could still see dust and dirt in all the nooks, and the bike rode significantly worse thereafter

Completely appreciate your decision to cross the cables, although we've had numerous accounts whereby crossing the gear cables internally results in rear shifting issues. Mainly when the added tension when shifting the front mech up can pull on the rear cable (sometimes as much as half a gear shift) and cause skipping. The only solution I've found when this occurs is not crossing the cables, and offering the customer a free frame wrap where the cables would rub. Great work as always though!

What I do is add a few shift housing mini tube tops from Jagwire (bought with my own money) when I reconfigure the shift housing routing. Depending on the model, they need anywhere between two to four or even five in total for shift housings only.

Great video. Spending £350 on getting a decent rim bike back into working order seems like a sound investment. I imagine the bike will last for many more years now with minimal further investment. Also, thanks for the Shimano crank recall advice. Bike shops locally were only replacing them last year if they spotted any issues.

Really enjoyed this video, as I have many of your others. I can honestly say, none of my bikes over 25years of MTBing have ever been to a workshop having done most work myself which I really enjoy. I invested in some Wera tools recently , since seeing your video on favourite tools, and can certainly say they are just quality and a pleasure to use. Back to the video I thought the cost was very reasonable having seen how far you went to get that new bike feel. I have no doubt the customer will be delighted on how it will ride, undoubtedly better than when new after this amount of attention! Keep up the great work and more videos please, they are so informative and helping me learn more and more.

11:35 I do the cross technique but whenever I can I put a bit of gear cable inner tube (the very central core) Down over the cable so if they do rub there’s some kind of barrier. When the cable runs through the frame particularly on Karban bikes often worth installing a bit of that foam outer to prevent rattling.

One thing I like to do with bikes with internal headsets if the frame has a regular round interface where the fork crown meets the frame is put an O-ring on that is slightly thicker than the gap between the fork and frame. It should be a size that fits around the gap to keep grit and water out, but no tighter than that. Bikes that get ridden in the rain without mudguards fling water and road grime into that gap as the front wheel rotates. Adding an O-ring here does wonders to adding longevity to the lower bearing, and costs less than a dollar, pound or euro. If for any reason it’s not desirable down the road, it’s easy to cut off.

I also like your cable routing method on smaller frames. Only an issue if the cable is crossed twice by mistake, it means the rear shifting can be affected by the tension in the front shift cable. A single crossover doesn’t cause any issue and some manufacturers do this from new, eg Giant.

Recently serviced myself the giant revolt gravel bike I bought for my wife. It was recently serviced at a bike shop. Boy oh boy! One pulley wheel was put on wrong way around, cable housings were truly rusted and one had even broken part stuck in cable stop. They just put new cables thru. Seatpost came out with beach amount of dust and grime. Just horrible, gave my feedback to the buddy of mine whom I bought the bike from. He was more than upset. Even the carbon handlebar was overtightened at the lever by someone. I am very confident in my abilities, build and service my rim and disc bikes myself. I even go bit further than you. In that case I flushed insides of gear shifters with stripped covers using wd40, regreased them with the same oil you had for brake calipers and disassembled the rear mech. Wanted to ask how you look at a bit of grease in cable stop ferules? I tend to put in some for gravel/all weather bikes. Great video, thanks!

Great vid and the pricing is great if you'd ask me. I've paid about the same for the not-so-thorough of my (rim) TT bike which was only a check and clean, no full rebuilt. TT-bikes are terrible to take apart but the shop did charge extra for replacing one brakehose. I service my other bikes myself and I don't really mind the cable routing, but I am looking for a new roadbike and the ease of servicing is a factor because it seems to become increasingly difficult to do those things at home. My local shops are pretty pricey so I don't want to fall back on those (charging almost 100 euros / 83 pounds for labour only when replacing a chain and cassette... come on...).

Frankly, I'm astounded at the prices. I had the service at over £300 and with parts, knocking £500. Of course costs are kept low by having the correct equipment available to do the job efficiently. The investment over time must have been enormous, but it indicates a good businessman behind the enterprise, not just a good engineer. Many in business are keen for maximum short term returns, not the case here. There are lessons to be learned from not just how to look after bicycles or how to get the best from them, but how to run a successful -longterm- business by providing a cost effective service that the market wants. Well done Paul.

@Mapdec
@Mapdec 17 күн бұрын
Not in a full strip service as I don’t think it takes any longer. For a single job we would charge more, but in reality at that point the bike most likely needs a full service anyway. Yes. Hoses get replaced as part of the service and the barbs are all billable. Again, this is a normal part of service to the brakes. No Different to cost of brake cables and outers when servicing a rim brake bike. When the frame is all stripped it takes no time to thread the hoses.

$215 dollars for the service you performed seems quite reasonable. I would even go so far as to say cheap. Especially since a lot of shops provide sup par service for more. Keep up the good work. @82vitt
@82vitt 2 ай бұрын
In the UK, if you ride a lot and own multiple bikes it quickly pays off to buy ones own quality tools and do all the servicing by oneself. Labour is outrageously expensive here, lead times are one week at the minimum in my experience. Mechanics can be dishonest when they see the customer has a fat wallet, but no clue and rip off happily for work unnecessary / or even not done. I have recently been quoted £100 for labour only for replacing bb bearings, which is a 20 mins job. It is an elite game, more expensive than golf, at this time and things will be only getting worse.

We do. When it’s appropriate. It’s very chemical dependent, noisy and not very effective sometimes. You can’t beat a good scrub.

What sort of turn around are you experiencing from Shimano on the crank recall? Considering taking my 6800 into my LBS but don't want to be without for too long.

Interesting what you are doing with the shimano cranksets. An Australian shop inspected mine, said they were ok, but didn't have an answer when I asked what would happen if they failed in the future. IMO everybcrankset should be replaced, period.

just keep taking them back for an inspection every week until they are sick of the sight of you and just send them back. We just learnt to fasttrack that process.

Aren't you afraid that the slightly oversized Bikone bearing is going to make the BB hole wear out even more? I have a Trek Emonda with bb90 and I'm struggling to find a good solution. I've seen you using a Token BB on a Trek and on other channels using BBinfinite. I guess I just don't know what to pick. My bearing fell right out of the BB when I took my cranks out

This is a slightly outdated service, a modern hydraulic brake/electric gears/fully internal hoses inc through the headset bearing or bearings is very different, it's a different service altogether.

Those types of bikes can be a quicker/easier service,there's often less to do (headset replacement being the exeption)

We explained that. And we have that type of bike service on the channel already. Modern bikes are much faster to service.

Read the instructions that came with your BB. You don’t mention tolerance or Material.

You mentioned galvanic corrosion near the mech hanger, did you need to clean this up or just leave it alone. I ask as I found some white powder in my frame and think it might be from the hanger area. There is a small hole on both chain stays near the mech hanger and the same on the other side, would water entering the hole cause corrosion here and should those holes be sealed up?
@Mapdec

Yep. Clean it all up.

@@Mapdec thanks for getting back to me, much appreciated. It doesn't look too bad from the outside, easy enough to clean up and touch up the paint. Is it possible to get a borescope down the chain stay from the bottom bracket as there seems to be quite a bit of debris inside my frame and I have to know where this extra weight Im carrying around is coming from ;)

say for example i booked in my dj bike for a full service and i had an extra long brake hose would you insist on cutting it or would you ask the question to myself before doing the service? geniune question cause a bike shop wouldnt take on the job as i wanted my brake hose extra long for barspins ect.

We might talk about fitting a Title Gyro, or ask how many wraps you want. 🤟. Jake once made a slipper clutch for some cranks so they wouldn’t spin in the air.

lol Australia is a pretty big place. You reckon a chap in Cumbria, England, would know a good mechanic in Australia? It seems unlikely! I’d say he’s more likely to know a few kangaroos in English zoos! 😁🦘

Wow! Very sexy looking wheel hubs 😍 It is always interesting to see and hear about the latest and greatest the industry has to offer but I must admit that I really appreciate a video like this, where an old and 'unhappy' bike is being given a new lease of life and probably rides as good, if not better, than when it was brand new.
What does it mean to give your bike a 'Full Service'?
