Music makes sense over the shots where we're just watching an operation being carried out with no chat, but please don't drown out the talking. We want to hear what you're saying - because that's the good bit!

Great video. Spending £350 on getting a decent rim bike back into working order seems like a sound investment. I imagine the bike will last for many more years now with minimal further investment. Also, thanks for the Shimano crank recall advice. Bike shops locally were only replacing them last year if they spotted any issues.

Completely appreciate your decision to cross the cables, although we've had numerous accounts whereby crossing the gear cables internally results in rear shifting issues. Mainly when the added tension when shifting the front mech up can pull on the rear cable (sometimes as much as half a gear shift) and cause skipping. The only solution I've found when this occurs is not crossing the cables, and offering the customer a free frame wrap where the cables would rub. Great work as always though!

What I do is add a few shift housing mini tube tops from Jagwire (bought with my own money) when I reconfigure the shift housing routing. Depending on the model, they need anywhere between two to four or even five in total for shift housings only.

I also like your cable routing method on smaller frames. Only an issue if the cable is crossed twice by mistake, it means the rear shifting can be affected by the tension in the front shift cable. A single crossover doesn’t cause any issue and some manufacturers do this from new, eg Giant.
@chrishophoto3 ай бұрын
One thing I like to do with bikes with internal headsets if the frame has a regular round interface where the fork crown meets the frame is put an O-ring on that is slightly thicker than the gap between the fork and frame. It should be a size that fits around the gap to keep grit and water out, but no tighter than that. Bikes that get ridden in the rain without mudguards fling water and road grime into that gap as the front wheel rotates. Adding an O-ring here does wonders to adding longevity to the lower bearing, and costs less than a dollar, pound or euro. If for any reason it’s not desirable down the road, it’s easy to cut off.

Recently serviced myself the giant revolt gravel bike I bought for my wife. It was recently serviced at a bike shop. Boy oh boy! One pulley wheel was put on wrong way around, cable housings were truly rusted and one had even broken part stuck in cable stop. They just put new cables thru. Seatpost came out with beach amount of dust and grime. Just horrible, gave my feedback to the buddy of mine whom I bought the bike from. He was more than upset. Even the carbon handlebar was overtightened at the lever by someone. I am very confident in my abilities, build and service my rim and disc bikes myself. I even go bit further than you. In that case I flushed insides of gear shifters with stripped covers using wd40, regreased them with the same oil you had for brake calipers and disassembled the rear mech. Wanted to ask how you look at a bit of grease in cable stop ferules? I tend to put in some for gravel/all weather bikes. Great video, thanks!

Great vid and the pricing is great if you'd ask me. I've paid about the same for the not-so-thorough of my (rim) TT bike which was only a check and clean, no full rebuilt. TT-bikes are terrible to take apart but the shop did charge extra for replacing one brakehose. I service my other bikes myself and I don't really mind the cable routing, but I am looking for a new roadbike and the ease of servicing is a factor because it seems to become increasingly difficult to do those things at home. My local shops are pretty pricey so I don't want to fall back on those (charging almost 100 euros / 83 pounds for labour only when replacing a chain and cassette... come on...).

$215 dollars for the service you performed seems quite reasonable. I would even go so far as to say cheap. Especially since a lot of shops provide sup par service for more. Keep up the good work. @82vitt3 ай бұрын
In the UK, if you ride a lot and own multiple bikes it quickly pays off to buy ones own quality tools and do all the servicing by oneself. Labour is outrageously expensive here, lead times are one week at the minimum in my experience. Mechanics can be dishonest when they see the customer has a fat wallet, but no clue and rip off happily for work unnecessary / or even not done. I have recently been quoted £100 for labour only for replacing bb bearings, which is a 20 mins job. It is an elite game, more expensive than golf, at this time and things will be only getting worse.

You used to see that in the early days of carbon when the grease could ‘damage’ the carbon. It led to all manner of carbon safe greases. In this instance grease is there to prevent corrosion to the surface of the bearing.

Frankly, I'm astounded at the prices. I had the service at over £300 and with parts, knocking £500. Of course costs are kept low by having the correct equipment available to do the job efficiently. The investment over time must have been enormous, but it indicates a good businessman behind the enterprise, not just a good engineer. Many in business are keen for maximum short term returns, not the case here. There are lessons to be learned from not just how to look after bicycles or how to get the best from them, but how to run a successful -longterm- business by providing a cost effective service that the market wants. say for example i booked in my dj bike for a full service and i had an extra long brake hose would you insist on cutting it or would you ask the question to myself before doing the service? geniune question cause a bike shop wouldnt take on the job as i wanted my brake hose extra long for barspins ect.

We might talk about fitting a Title Gyro, or ask how many wraps you want. 🤟. Jake once made a slipper clutch for some cranks so they wouldn’t spin in the air.
