When the lava emerges from one of the vents at Kilauea, it comes out at 700 to 1,200 °C (1,292 to 2,192 °F), and begins to make its way to the path of least resistance.
This video shows how pressure applied to this dense material only causes a slight indentation. While this may not be surprising (it is liquid rock), I think that many people think of lava as more of a hot-watery-like substance. You would never fall into a lava lake the way you would a swimming pool, the molten rock is much more dense, so you would simply land on it, sink a little, and be burned.

All solid materials have their “latent heat of fusion” (in this case shoe). The lava given a short amount of contact time haven’t exceeded that required latent heat of fusion in order for the shoe to start melting. In this case, this is heat transfer via conduction (look at the cooled outer layer of lava insulating between the surrounding air and lava) because the surrounding air was not heated enough to even transfer heat to them. I tried this experiment at my grandmother's very old house when I was about 5 yrs old and it didn't quite turn out as good as this. Her house had heating vents in the floor and I got curious what would happen if I stepped on one. Of course I went all in with both feet... *bare feet*... and next thing I remember was being in the ER with a waffle pattern burned into the soles of my feet and doctors & nurses holding me down to dunk my feet in an ice bath. I don't think they treat burns that way anymore but this was the mid 1970s.

That was actually a flare from the lava. The outer layer is actually somewhat solid, when you push on it hot gasses escape and you get those cool little flares. You see them when bubbles pop too.

Never stepped on Lava but I've had a decent amount of experience with molten steel in foundries. While hotter than lava it's orders of MAGNITUDE more controlled and we had shiny volcano suits and massive boots lol While I've had to walk over partially molten steel, it was always funny to watch the new guy step his first few steps over it with cheap boots before jumping back off quickly and doing the "fire toes jig".
