I just came back from my first oil painting workshop, and instructor told me to work on values with a monochrome painting. Your video was perfect!! Thanks!

Value is actually more important than the actual color. We have all seen paintings where the colors are not natural...yet if the values are right the painting looks right

Hey, just have to say that I truly appreciate your videos and look forward to your new posts. Value is my biggest challenge. I get so excited about colour and go nuts with the first colour I see. Part of me loves this (artistic license) but I'd really like to understand the difference between my happy accidents and my intentional choices. Do you offer in-person workshops? If I were able to paint alongside you for a week, I feel like I would "get it" more... of course, post-pandemic.

Hi there! Question: I just started with Oil painting, and I noticed that in tge drying procedure, some areas tend to dry in a way that the paint loses all shine to it, so that looks like a dull acrylic surface. I do use good quality Oils, and use a little linseed Oil and Liquin original as I see fit. I'm painting on canvas that I've gessoed twice and I applied a thin Acrylic layer (not deluded, but just really stretched out) to have a neutral base colour. So, anyone have a suggestion as to why some parts of the painting dry completely dull? And no it's not the acrylic surface that is unpainted ;) Have a good one!
@hgzmatt4 жыл бұрын
I think that's usually the areas where I use thin paint diluted with paint thinner. As you add more paint or oil it gets glossy. It doesn't usually bother me and I guess varnish would take care of that? Not sure, haven't tried that yet.
@marysechauvet21893 жыл бұрын
From France,have been painting for 35 years.Remember coat number 1 is dull as you have used terpenthine .or à ny thinner number 2 is glossy, 3 is dull etc...So if you work more on certain zones ,you have shiny ones,and dull ones .Once it is dry you can use retouching varnish to allow a certain unity and to allow thé colours to get their proper valûes.

What do you do for your paintings to dry quicker? I have a small apartment and I don't have a lot of room to leave paintings to dry.
@GalleryBry4 жыл бұрын
I like to use an alkyd walnut medium from m Graham. It’s non toxic and dries quickly. I also use a lot my burnt umber in my mixes, which speeds drying quite a bit.

You're serious a big help, Chris! I have a dumb question... On a stretched canvas, do you pai t the sides? Is it dependent on whether you'll frame or sell it? I forget to, so I try to paint it later, & it looks silly & mismatched. But I kinda suck, so. P. S. I'm totally trying to rip off your style, & I'll probably claim it came naturally if someone likes it...
@mrjanssen38564 жыл бұрын
Hi there, well i always paint the sides, as it just looks messie if there are loose strokes going over the sides unregulary. I tend to do it when the painting is done, so I can chose a colour that compliments the painting, giving it a nice final touch.

Hii, I have a really important question, I just found a red oil paint called cadmium red deep hue, there's no cadmium red alone available, does the red deep also work as a primary color?. And also, is cadmium yellow a good primary yellow? or is a yellow pale hue a better one?(Im talking about the winsor and newton ones btw). I hope you can respond to me soon. I looove your videos.

@@powderriverfarrier Yes so far I love this guy, I recently found him and he's very obviously one of the best. To be fair and honest I haven't seen or used his Patreon. But in general, all across the KZbin platform, I HATE when people play loud, or obnoxious, or ANY music (especially how to videos!). When I want to hear KZbin music I go the artists I LIKE, listen to what I WANT, and WHEN I want!
