I have no doubt that, following a 15-1 season that ended badly, Dean Spanos would have fired Cowher and replaced him with Norv Turner or someone else who had no business being a head coach. Especially since that was Cowher's fourth AFC Championship game loss at home. That's the difference between stable and unstable ownership. I had been a Saints fan from the beginning....Billy Kilmer, John Gilliam, Steve Stonebreaker, Jim Taylor, Dave Wetzel, Danny Abromowitz, Charlie Derkie who was kicker before Demsey...I can go on and on about my devotion to this very loosing team that I stood by with enthusiamsm for all of these years. Then 20 years later, we weren't the "aints" anymore. We finally got into the playoffs but did nothing after. Then we got to the playoffs with a one game win...THEN FINALLY, a little more than another 20 years...AHHH! SB CHAMPS! Sorry Drew if I seem insensitive to your injury but I think without it/you, the Saints would still be in the SB hunt. Thus we could expect more that we would win instead of loose with Drew and Sean. Brees didn't throw temper tantrums or roll his eyes after a int. I seen him mad one time at Jeremy Shockey for blowing his cover and the two went on to pass for a touchdown in a super bowl. @clark25013 жыл бұрын
Yep. Only downside is that shoulder injury definitely shortened his prime a little bit. Had he not suffered it (and still been in the league at that point) he probably would’ve had 2, maybe 3 years left before his arm started going out on him.
@yanks26613 жыл бұрын
Outside of the '04 season, he looked pretty average and even in that one bright spot season, they couldn't even snag a playoff win against the worst AFC team. Guess he just needed a change of scenery and a weaker conference. Wasn't really like the Chargers made a bad decision letting him go. Rivers had an overall better SD career than Brees did. That being said, Brees had a better overall career than Rivers did, but that may never have happened if he stayed with the Chargers.
@deagle77763 жыл бұрын
If brees turned out as great as he was in NO, then he probably would’ve won a Super Bowl with gates and lt. But who knows if he could get past Brady in the AFC playoffs, which was the reason for many teams including chargers why they couldn’t get a ring
@thecensoredmuscle5633 жыл бұрын
Brees was great in playoffs that 04 year though. 05 was a great year also for 05 standards and rules. For today's easy rules it would be an average season, but back then Brees had a season worse than only Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer. Brady, Brees, and Hasselbeck were the notch below them.

I'm a lifelong charger fan and I remember the draft when we drafted Drew Brees and LT back-to-back. We had the number one draft pick that year and we were going to use it on Michael Vick but we traded the pick away to Atlanta for their first round pick and Tim Dwight and a few others and ended up with Brees and LT instead of Michael Vick

Going to NO saved Drew's career, had he stayed in SD he never would have won a Super bowl nor had nearly the success he had otherwise. Of course coaches are a BIG fuckin deal. Vince Lombardi the man that the Super Bowl trophy is named after the year before he went to Green Bay the team went 1-10-1 his first year the team went 7-5 and the year after that the team went 8-4 and went to the NFL championship pre Super Bowel era. And from that team in 1958 that had a record of 1-10-1 seven went on to become hall of famers.
@clark25013 жыл бұрын
I think with Brees, he showed glimpses of what he could be in 2004 and 2005. Situation also helps too. Payton got him on the right track and by 2008, Brees could’ve been the QB he turned into on just about any team imo.

Imagine if they drafted Larry Fitzgerald to go with Brees, LT, and Antonio Gates it probably would have been best offense of all time. Leaving it to the chargers to blow it! Brees and LT had some of the worse support young players could get before shottenheimer arrived in SD. But Brees is a winner, he won in HS, took Purdue to the Rose Bowl, even won with the chargers, and did the impossible brought a Lombardi to New Orleans. Brees is a winner and Winners win!

I remember going to a talk with Purdue football coach Joe Tiller a few weeks before the 2004 draft. Great deep dive on this! It’s crazy how one hit can change an NFL career and a teams trajectory. Bledsoe takes that hit and Brady takes over and the Pats Dynasty begins. Brees takes this hit, which send him to the Saints and they win a Super Bowl. Wild.
