no because there is an element of dishonesty at work if this was to ever come to court. If he took the coin back, by basically tricking him, then it could be seen as unlawfully dishonest. If he explains everything and explicity states "if you hand me back the coin, it will be as a gift because I have already given this to you as payment" and they still do it, then that cannot be seen as dishonest, because his intentions were very, very clear to all parties. His statement shows that he was not aware he had to accept it, or else he would've done. This is where the dishonesty can come into play. I don't think the point here is to "scam" ignorant people, but educate them and bring awareness to the relevance of cash in today's society.

The level of ignorance of the general public is staggering. Take photography, it has never been illegal to film. Even the police think it’s illegal to film, yet they are the first to ask the public if they have any photos or video of an incident. The council of police chiefs (what ever they are called now) had to put out not one but two memo to their officers informing them photography is not a crime. As for coins i assumed that a commemorative coin was a normal coin with a higher value than that stamped on it because of the picture also stamped on it, but was then still worth only worth the face value after purchase. As ive seen coins in the post office for sale but £4.99 above face value.
