I have been searching for the name today and came upon your video. We have it here in Trinidad, W.I. (Sun almost every day). It is like a natural hedge. It grows about 7 to 8 ft, a taxonomic tree. All we need to do is trim it. Some are yellow to lemon green, while others like the color you have. I thought the yellow meant it needed water. But it is resilient during the dry season. It takes the full sun. There is no need to water it except during the two-week dry spell that we have. The recent changing climate might mean watering once a week if there is no drizzle. I believe it has adapted to the environment hence the beautiful bright yellow and speedy growth.

It's so interesting to me how the same plant can respond very differently to different environments. I live in a tropical Asian country and have been living with this beauty for close to 2 years now. In my experience, it always throws a fit and starts yellowing bottom leaves if I let it dry between waterings. It sits in a terracotta pot on my west facing window and loves to guzzle up water every 3-4 days, despite the fact that the humidity levels where I live are 70-80% all year round. And boy it grows fast! I've had to prune it twice this year already and looks like I might have to do it again next spring. But all in all, I love it. It's one of my first plant babies and the first I've grown from a cutting. Thank you for sharing your experience. It was totally fascinating to compare it with mine!

I have the aralia Fabian stump and I killed my first one. My second one is thriving. It’s in a north facing window that is blocked by my balcony. I also have a grow light that helps with more lighting. Today, I found the Balfouriana at Walmart, and doubled back when I realized it was basically a variegated Fabian stump. I figure the care is similar. I treat my Fabian stump exactly the same as stated. 🤫I repotted mine right away because Walmart will murder a plant with water and I didn’t want to take any risk. I bought two and planted them together. I sure hope that was okay. Thanks for the tips!

Tight move! Wallys is notorious for plant neglect. I don't think it's thier fault. Usually the employees aren't too interested in the maintenance and upkeep. What kind of soul did you use?

@@plantmarksthepot5618 you are so right about the employees and Walmart does not mind losing money. I used a mixture. I am kind of experimenting right now. I will admit I don’t know what I am doing. Lol Coco husk, worm casting, perlite, and horticulture charcoal.

I've fallen in love with my baby Balfour!! Want to make sure I can keep it alive. It's been doing great the last month. I've got it under a growing light, cause it's about 10 feet from an West facing window and 15 from an east window. But I've been reading that it needs to be kept up by pruning. Any tips when/how to do that? Thanks!!

I’m mad for Balfourianas, have tried them twice before, and just brought home #3 and repotted from soggy potting soil to sphagnum/perlite mix. Did take the risk of adding a smidgen - just a smidgen - of slow-release food and precautionary systemic houseplant insecticide (SOP at my house since the tragic Spider Mite Overwinter Invasion of 2017). Here’s where I’m struggling and a bit confused … I hear you about letting them become almost dry before watering. But in my experience, they tend to respond somewhat poorly to that … my last Balfour, a day or so before the top of soil was dry to touch, would begin to wilt _severely_ … even, time and again, bent over at mid-level of the woody stem. (Think peace lily “I’m sooooo dry” histrionics lol). Even though it always seemed to recover, I soon placed it near my kitchen sink so I could watch regularly. And yes, I watered more or less on schedule (5-7 days, roughly, depending on season/weather, etc.) Eventually, however, it finally gave up on me, apparently as dry as toast. There were not apparent pests, either. I adore aralias -‘Japanese fatsias, stump, Mings… you name it, but Balfours have my heart. Can you help save me & my newest baby from future heartbreak? Fingers crossed and thanks for the video and the aralia love!

I just picked mine up yesterday and am wondering how to keep it humid. We live in MN so now it is currently summer. 75% of the year, it is more dry season due to winter and cold. Any suggestions? I am keeping it, for now, it the nursery pot, yet am ready to re-pot when needed. We have the new pot, and I heard your advice about fertilizer. I am new to house plants so any advice helps!

I've decided not to give any fertilizer to my aralias. I've noticed they tend to develop burn. Perhaps they prefer worm castings instead

I have several balfoural arailas and I love them so much. The oldest one (I call her Mom) is at least 15 yo if not more and I have managed to grow several ”babies” through the years gone by. But now they don’t feel good at all, they get brown spots on the leaves and then they just shrivel and fall off.. 😢😩🥺 I’ve tried many things, a couple of weaks ago I tried watering them with nematodes, but it doesn’t seem to change anything for the better.. 😔 I wonder if it would be a good idea to change the soil on them? Maybe try to find that.. peat moss? and mix it in?.. Please, is there any chance for me to save my plant children?🙏🏼 Hugs from me in Sweden 🪴💚🪴
