I remember the day of my high school graduation party, I was waiting outside for everyone in this pink dress with tiny, cartoony, flowers all over it, and this one bee bumped (I think you'll find it appropriate that I initially mistyped that as "bee bumbed") into me, just over and over, and over. Obviously I stood stock still and just let it do its thing, but I think I watched a genuinely confused bee just trying so hard to find a real flower on my dress. I just imagine it's little internal monologue "Are you a flower? *bump* Are YOU a flower? *bump* "

I've literally pet yellow jackets since I was kid and never been stung. They aren't especially aggressive unless defending a nest.

German hornets (aka european hornets, which is an invasive species in America) can defend their hunting grounds and prey from theft of prey, and this may seem like unwarranted to us humans because we don't see that prey nor do we intend to steal it from the hornet. And these hornets look a lot like a yellowjacket, being just a little larger with some subtle differences not commonly seen when the hornet is in flight. However, speaking of the yellowjacket, they CAN be provoked by certain perfumes and smells which may contain analogues to aggressor pheromones which triggers aggressive behavior.

I have never actually been stung. I used to love watching the Bees when I was in primary school and I could be so gentle that they'd let me touch their backs and wings. Last year though I found an injured bumblebee that I really did try to help but it had buggered it's wing badly and probably would have lived very long... I research the most painless way to kill once I realise it was just suffering, it made me so sad to have to do because I love Bees and butterfly even though all other bugs I'm extremely terrified of. RIP Miss Bumbblebee, I'm sorry.

Bumblebees are incredibly calm and gentle, to the point where it’s almost impossible to get stung by one unless you either step on her or deliberately provoke her.

Once the first few flowering trees were in bloom here, I ended up with my camera trying to get a close up picture of one of the little bees that were flying all around the tree. Don't think they even noticed me, they were getting the good stuff from the flowers.

I was able to provide much better enrichment for my pet rabbit and guinea pig after watching Cheeks and your whole herd! I also have been able to better train them to target objects. This is very helpful incase they escape, or get stuck somewhere and I need them to come back. Thank you, Animal Wonders!

Hi, person with moderate-strong allergy (and MAJOR phobia) here... This is really, REALLY good info. Very well done and I also applaud your choice of images. You're absolutely spot on with your facts (not that I would expect anything less, you guys are always super diligent and honest). I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making such a clear, calm video. I don't require an epi-pen but I do have much stronger reactions than average - a yellowjacket sting swelled up my entire arm, and even a mud dauber sting (one of the milder venoms I'm told) basically paralyzed the muscles in my shoulder and arm for about an hour. Because of those reactions and not understanding everything going on, I became very, very phobic. I didn't know I wasn't going to die, you see - so I was terrified. I've been careful, of course, but when I do see them there is always a strong fear reaction. (Sometimes even from images alone.) I've gotten better with time and effort and therapy, and I am glad to say I haven't been stung in years, though I still have panic attacks if I encounter a wasp unprepared (or, heavens help me, if one is in the house - I'm done for then!). But you did such a good job with this video that I barely got a shiver of fear, so seriously, LOTS OF KUDOS for that. I deeply appreciate how careful you are because you do know that folks can get scared, even if not everyone's phobic. I'd like to also note for those out there who might have concerns about specific wasps and bees in their area - in the USA at least, there are usually agriculture extension offices in your county: they will have LOTS of info for you about specific critters in your area and might have other kinds of help and advice. They're a better bet than your local exterminator if all you want is information, since after all the exterminator really does specialize in killing bugs! In my own area there are resources for bee keepers in particular and some resources about identifying what kind of sting you've got (since sometimes kids get stung and didn't see what got them). And the same offices can ALSO tell you what kinds of "good bugs" you have around and how to attract them!

Remember, when you get stung, do NOT try and pinch and grab the stinger. It's better to scratch over it, it'll still dislodge it, but pinching it can lead to injecting more venom into your system :)

This is actually a common misconception, they've done studies and the stinger has muscles that keep working over time to inject more venom even if it's not attached to the bee. It's most important to get the stinger OUT as quickly as possible by whatever means are available.

1) I love how chill Loki is, especially during all the gesticulating. 2) I got stung by a yellowjacket in fourth grade. We were in an old building with no AC. We were coming in an hour early and leaving an hour early during the extreme heat of a Midwest summer. However the screenless windows were still open for a breeze in the classroom. The yellowjacket must have gotten in that way. I had reached under my seat for something and BAM! I will never forget that pain. Surprisingly, I was not allergic to the sting (I seem to be allergic to everything else on Earth). I remember going to the nurse and getting antiseptic spray for it. I do know the difference between a yellowjacket and a bee, but now I have a fear when I see/hear either them nearby of reaching under my seat. xD. I usually will be the first to go inside if I especially see a wasp.

Key word being “apparently”. You are not an insect and don’t have insect senses so you don’t know what they were reacting to. Insects can see and hear and smell stimuli that you can’t detect.

Just because you're not aware you've done anything doesn't mean you haven't. I'm someone who has literally gone out of my way to pet wasps and never been stung. Their level of aggression is wildly overblown. Most likely you were near an unseen nest, some wasps nest in the ground making them pretty impossible to see.

I went to the San Diego zoo with my family many years ago, and my grandfather was wearing a big Hawaiian style shirt that looks like it has big flowers all over it. When we got to the giraffe enclosure one of them leaned down and tried to eat his shirt!!

Weirdly, wasps seem to like me. I know how crazy that sounds, but I was a curious kid and often followed them around, let them crawl on me, and even caught a few out of the air (I didn't know any better). Bees, wasps and hornets are fascinating, complex insects. Some are solitary and some are communal. Some nest in trees or buildings and others burrow in the ground. I respect and enjoy them. That being said, I have had the misfortune of being stung numerous times. Once on my foot as a child, twice getting out of pools, a couple of times they flew in an open car window and once I hit an underground burrow of sweat bees. And yes, they swarmed. They followed me into my house. It might help others to do research on the differences between bee and wasp stings. I was swarmed by bees (about 30 stings on my face and neck) and had a mild reaction; stings by wasps, however, caused my arm (or leg) to swell until it was hard and purple. Some people claim that one venom is acidic and the other base and that vinegar or baking soda put on the appropriate sting can help neutralize the venom. This is not a substitute for an epi-pen or doctor's care. A doctor told me you may not be allergic to the sting but allergic to any pollen they carry on the stinger. Also, note that red streaks flaring from the bee sting are a reason to be concerned and to call a doctor. I just want to state again, continue your research! Information adds to both your enjoyment and safety in this wonderful, complex world!

Bees have always been attracted to me. Never been stung; the closest was when i went swimming and a bee landed in my hair and got caught and its stinger scratched my neck a little. It's a little annoying when I'm out on my tablet or phone in my garden and bees decide they need to investigate my hands. Wearing mostly black or gray hasn't really lessened their attraction or curiosity and i never wear perfume and stick with unscented soaps. Staying calm and waiting for them to move on is best. Unless you're near their hive, they don't really want to sting you. I decided to plant some bee friendly herbs and flowers this year and flowers are just starting to bloom

If you find a honey bee hive that is too close to (or inside) a building, instead of calling an exterminator try to contact a local beekeeper or beekeeping association. They will usually be willing to remove a hive, sometimes even for free.

I'm happy to see bees and wasps in my garden. I have black iridescent wasps in my garden that help with pollination along with bees. The spiders in my garden catch and eat the wasps. Every animal/insect/spider has a purpose

I remember getting stung by bees a few times, and after my dad's telling me the bee died when it stung me-despite the pain-I still felt sorry for the little animal who had died. I felt so guilty because I was in the bee's way. I still love to watch bees, bumblebees, wasps, moths and ladybugs to this day: the tips on this video are very useful!

I worked with the european bees for about 4-6 months, when I had to collect the bees (forager bees as they are about to leave the hive) directly from their artificial hives (And sometimes from flowers). I was never stung during that time. At first I was really scared and was very cautious. But with time, I got used to them and sometimes got really close to the hive without really thinking about it. I think bees are just really cute. The way they stick out their tongue when you feed them a little sugar water. The way they hug each other when its cold. The asian honeybees are much more aggressive though. Although I did collect a few of these with the help of someone more experienced, we were very very cautions around the hive of these guys. Again, never got stung, but I wouldn't take my chances.

I've been terrified of wasps most of my life. Doesn't matter the kind, they terrify me to the point that I can't comfortably outside save in fall or winter. However, I had an experience with Bumble Bees that I'll never forget: I was forced to sit outside with friends one spring day, and red wasps started getting close. As usual, I was going to head inside...until a Bumble Bee came up and started patrolling our sitting area. And yes, it was a full patrol, back and forth along the border between where we were sitting and where the wasps were. Any time a wasp tried to get near, the bee would immediately attack it and send her packing. After about the fifth such defense, I went inside and got some sugar water for the bumble bee, which she then used to refuel and resume patrol. I was able, for the first time, to sit outside and enjoy myself during a spring day and not be scared of being stung. To this day, I have a rule that bumble bees are protected on my property and NOBODY is to knowingly harm one ever.

if you find a bee hive in your yard, call a local bee keeper! they'll move the hive to a safe place, and if it's a honey bee hive they can give them a good home!

I'm not afraid of bees or wasps anymore. I tried to pick up a wasp yesterday, but he/she wasn't interested and flew away. Today I tried to pick up a bubble bee I accidently sprayed with water, but it didn't want to, so I left it alone. They will only sting you for a reason. If they communicate to you that they want you to stay away, just listen. If they are tired or casual, I have no fear. If you want to pick something up, make sure it doesn't mind.

I've never been stung by a bee or wasp, and I've had contact with both. I try to rescue tired bumblebees if i find them on the floor, without much motion or direct contact if i can help it by using a sturdy leaf or other perch. Once i had a very big bumblebee buzzing loudly and angrily in my hand trying to calmly relocate it to some bushes to rest safely. Very tense! Wasps tend to land on me a lot. I just let them. They've also buzzed around my face and ears but never given me any trouble.

I am in south New Jersey and we have a cow killer/valvet ground wasp. They are red and black and it feels like a gun shot when you get stung. I have never actually been shot by a gun but it's the best description I can come up with. They are not a joke.

I still have trouble walking barefoot on grass because a bee stung me as a young child (because I foolishly stepped on it) and it took waaaaay too long for my mom to hear me and rescue me while I had to watch the bee still attached to my tiny foot. PTSD realness Wasps are cool, they pull out and fly away if they can. Also I love watching them later in summer when they carve out pieces of food and then fly away with their load like a cargo-zeppelin

I once was playing hide and seek with my freinds outside. When i squeezed into my hiding place I laid on a bee. It hurt so much but i wanted to win so i just lay there silently suffering.

When I first started working full-time as a gardener, I was pretty afraid of all bees. Even the giant, slow, goofy bumblebees! Now I feel more confident in knowing which ones are safe, and really don't care if I get all up in their business while wrangling the flowers. That being said, I have a co-worker who has had really bad luck with wasps. They tend to build their nests in beech trees (probably cause that tree is susceptible to aphids, which they eat), and he's usually the one pruning the large hedges. Twice while I was working with him he's gotten stung pretty bad, and was swollen for a few days. Good thing we have ice packs, after-bite, and anti-histamines in our first aid kits!

I had a close friend growing up who was severely allergic to bee stings and for a long time I sort of absorbed her fear of them. Now I don't mind them because whenever I see them they're much more interested in the flowers than they are in me! I'm still pretty afraid of getting stung though - I've only ever been stung once in my life and I don't even remember it because I was too little. So I don't know what a bee sting feels like, how badly it hurts, or even if my body could react severely to it

My husband took it before we got our first hives. extension.psu.edu/beekeeping-101 You probably also have a beekeepers association meeting somewhere near you who can talk to you about local resources.

I've never been stung. Unless you count by an ant. We have bull ants in Australia and that's what bit or stung me and it hurt like hell!

Great information!! I have a question; what are usually the very first signs of anaphylaxis? I have only been stung once by a honey bee and thus do not know if I'm allergic, but my mom gets anaphylaxis from honey bee stings and is moderately allergic to yellow jackets, so even though I don't know if I'm allergic I have an epipen for when I hike alone, but I'm very worried someday I'll get stung and not know when to gun for using the epipen.. especially since I'm afraid of needles and am nervous I won't be able to get myself to do it at all

This brings up a story, ive been stung by about, ill say bee's 2 times, and wasps one time, the one time i was stung by wasps was on a golf course, and no, i didnt mess with them, i stepped on a ground wasp nest, i didnt even notice until i felt 3 shapr pains on my back, and right as i got them off, 5 on my leg, *thank god for jeans* l

Good video. thanks! I've got a killer bee hive next to my chimney. About ten years ago I had arthritis in my hands, I couldn't close some fingers into a fist or snap my fingers. This problem was persistent for at least three years. My doctor just shrugged. Then I got stung by one of the killer bees. I yanked the stinger out almost immediately - so no big deal. A few weeks later I noticed that my arthritis had disappeared. After that I figure the killer bees have earned their place. Did they cure my arthritis? Not sure.

a thing that I say to children when a wasp/ bee land on them is "don't move. she just wants to see if you are a flower, because you're so beautiful! just stay still, and she'll realise that you don't have any pollen or nectar for her and go away."

I wonder, has anyone ever found ways to discourage ground nesting wasps from building nests in an area? I know in my region, the major fear from the bee/wasp category is in-ground yellow jacket nests. It’s easy for someone to accidentally disturb or step on a buried nest before you realize it. The bees can stay, though. They normally just want the azaleas when they are in bloom. We even have very pretty metallic blue and green colored ones called sweat bees.
