Personally I think if you move anywhere just "for the money" you will be disappointed. Move because you want a whole different living experience and if it turns out to be a bit less expensive then all the better.

Many of us would love to move to Mexico, especially those on low fixed incomes, social security alone. Hardships galore in the US now, so it would be harder if the $ keeps losing ground in Mexico and makes it just as difficult as well.😢

@@jvahl8747 I understand but all I can say is that despite it's reputation Mexico is not cheap cheap cheap. I like Mexico, it's a beautiful place, and in my experience it can be a little more reasonable depending on where you are moving from and your lifestyle, but I don't think you'll be going from pauper to prince by moving to Mexico. If recent currency movements are going to make the difference then I would say you need a little more buffer room in your budget. Don't make money the only reason is all I am saying.

Very good video....I'm being "victimized" by the super Peso as well. What I have done to adjust, is to live more like a Mexican....NOT shopping at Costco, and not the big box Mexican supermarkets, Soriana, etc, but shopping like a Mexican, the local fruit and vegetable markets, meat markets, buying from ranchos, and taking the bus, not driving so much. Hope that helps.

Great explanation and spreadsheet. From some of the analysts I've read, the peso is expected to be closer to 18 by 3rd quarter however from what someone else already said, the possible combinations of what affects the exchange rate is almost endless (and impossible to predict). Thank you!

The thing to remember is that for exchange rates to change, other things have to be changing, too. The possible combinations are almost endless, but can include inflation, effect of trade with other countries, wage rates, development of natural resources, foreign investment in productive assets, demand and supply of the currencies between the two countries, etc. I would also add that inflation in Mexico right now is only about 4.4% (February 2024) compared to 8.7% in August 2022 (when the peso was roughly 20:1) or the average of 19% over the past 60 years - which has a significant effect on exchange rates. (The easiest way to think about that is that the exchange rate, in the end, is a function of supply and demand of the two currencies across each other. The peso takes on a higher value if the inflation rate is lower since it won't lose value as fast. And, of course, in the supply and demand picture, if you look at all the new investment by expats moving to Mexico, it makes sense that the peso would gain in strength.) Still, as you point out, your break-even analysis is nice in that it clearly illustrates where the values lie when one moves to Mexico. (Just make sure you sell the Ford 350 before moving down here. 😅)

I had a feeling you’d share some deeper understanding! I kept thinking “I’m really oversimplifying this.” And at the same time, “my oversimplification is still complicated!” So many things impacting this stuff. Nearshoring is a huge impact. And if the peso gets too strong, then the near shoring might slow down. What’s your prediction for the exchange rate in June of this year?
@davidmalone9022
@davidmalone9022 5 ай бұрын
@@AlmostRetiredinMexico Any future exchange rates are going to be a function of all those factors we're talking about. The problem with second guessing exchange rates is that it's so dependent on being able to accurately predict all of those other factors. Then, when you realize that there are thousands of analysts around the world, with unlimited resources to solve this problem, trying to outguess them turns into a fool's errand. Fungible commodities are among the most efficient markets there are (i.e., commodities whose markets are nearly perfectly elastic - that includes currencies.) So, my best guess today of what the net present value of the future exchange rate will be would have to be today's exchange rate, with an understanding that as all of those factors change, so will the exchange rates. And all those analysts are far more likely to hear about those things before we do (and would also know just how to adjust their willingness to buy or sell pesos - affecting the exchange rates between the peso and every other currency around the world.) For example, suppose that a new oil field was discovered in Mexican waters off of Campeche and the oil firms of the world started competing for access to that oil. They would need pesos to do that, which would drive the demand for pesos up, causing the price of the peso to go up, meaning that your dollar would not buy as many pesos (i.e., the exchange rate would drop.) But, we won't know about it until it happens (and even then, we'll probably be among the last to know...) Still, I do like the graphic using the spreadsheet. It quickly points to the things we can expect to be cheaper, and those that will be more expensive in Mexico. Further, the graphic would be very different for different places in Mexico. It would be interesting to look at the spreadsheet with Cabo prices inserted instead of those of La Paz. Or, prices from Topolobampo (the first small, probably inexpensive place I could think of.) It would also be very interesting to compare things to Canada. Even gas would be cheaper here and your graphic would demonstrate just how much better the decision to move here is for Canadians than for us. It could have a lot of uses that way, and in a way that would be eminently readable. Really, a pretty cool way of looking at the issue of "cost of living" differences than most others we see on KZbin.

When we bought our house in Mexico the exchange rate was 13.60 and the value of the house is about double what we paid. That is a problem today because a decent house costs much much more than it once did. If there is a silver lining - CETES are paying 11+% - more than double that of a T-Bill. I was in La Paz earlier this year. I saw some beautiful real estate but what I saw was kind of comparable to buying on the west coast of Florida (perhaps without some of the overhead costs). I wish La Paz had a sandy, walkable beach...

Thanks for the video. Yeah remittances to Mexico are a huge driver of the exchange rate and inflationary issues. I was in Ensenada this weekend for a language course, and I happen to run into a Mexican (with his American adult kids) at a Taco Stand during lunch and we struck up a conversation. He who works in the US legally, but owns his house in Ensenada. He comes down almost every weekend and he was talking about the increasing cost. All the while, I'm thinking to myself..."you know...y'all are adding to the problem far more than Expats, 🤣". I think at last count had it as almost $6B monthly, but everything has a cycle, and what goes up, must come down. Nothing wrong with what he's doing, as he should live a good life for his hard work, but he's basically skewing the income norms for comparable work.

I've been listening to your video and reading some comments. All i can say is that there are too many senerios to consider. If someone is immigrating to mexico, they need to know there will always be pros and cons, as with any country in the world. Ones decision will have to be based on many different factors, not just the value of the peso. I have been trying to see if i could live in mexico on social security alone, and as a senior with just a pension, i can tell you that it's becoming impossible. I've been living in mexico now for 5 months and compared to last winter the cost of living has doubled in food alone. Plus,many other factors that come up unexpectedly make it very hard to live here now. In the last 3 months, I've noticed an increase in prices on food, in the supermarket and restaurants, have increased 10 pesos, twice. But the service and quality are not better, actually I've noticed it's worse. I'm paying almost $3.00 for a regular coffee with no refill and you have to pay extra for milk and not a good cup of coffee either. I'm disappointed in the direction things are going. As for rent, it's stayed the same, but i have no hot water, daily pluming repairs, and no water at all some days, as the well runs dry. But the rent has to be pd in full. The landlords are not as cooperative as in the past. Claiming things are expensive and they want their money. I've been noticing little changes here and there that, in the end, add up to quite a lot. I've come to the conclusion that things are not looking hopeful for me, at least, to live in mexico, if things keep going in this direction and as you say, if the peso gets stronger, then it will be even worse. As a senior, I'm sad to say i would not be able to make it on social security as I did in the past. 😢 I love Mexico, but it's becoming more difficult to live here, especially for seniors. Hopefully, I'm wrong. I hope i am. I would love to return to living here.

Hi Brighton! I really enjoyed this video and even in the future when the numbers are different the topic will have value! I think one of the largest savings I have noticed when we are doing projects in Mexico that construction workers are MUCH more reasonable.... Now, they might do things a lot different for example they might show up on a different day or hour than was agreed upon,, but ultimately they are a lot less for the value! Last month when I was buying groceries and other items for daily use in Puebla, MX, I would say I spent about a third of what I do in Oregon... So that part was also a savings... Car repairs is another area that you can save a lot in Mexico.... Gas for your car will be more expensive as you noted, but a great way to save is to use public transportation..,, I am learning to really love the bus and light rail as well as Combi-van. Citi- Bus is only 9 pesos for any direction Big gas savings by using Metro as well. Muchas Gracias for all the topics!! :)

I think many people are comparing the peso strength to pandemic exchange rates which were impacted by COVID. When you look at the 30 year history of the peso you can see an upward trend. In 1994 the Peso was 4.5 to 1.00 USD and that gap grew over 30 years. You can see spikes in 2008 (during the recession) and 2020 (during Covid) . I think this is more of a restabilization post covid that we are seeing but I'm not a geographer not an economist.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico

I think COVID impacted the exchange rate both ways. In the short term the Peso got weaker, but in the long term COVID was great for the Peso and that will probably continue for years. If you draw the "average live" for the last 25 years, the Peso is stronger than average right now. But I think that might be the new normal because of near shoring. But, like you, I'm not an economist. And the economist who watches my channel says it's too complicated to predict ;-)

I don't know that that type of regulation exists at the government level anywhere in Mexico. Maybe there are some HOAs that have restrictions. But where I live, you can pretty much do what you want with your land. Chickens would be the least bad thing I've seen. It's good and bad. Our biggest worry with our neighbors building on their vacant lot would be putting in an event space (for parties because people's home are too small for a party.) That would have meant loud music all night long... But they are building houses...

The cartel problem could be solved on US soil by handling gun smuggling and drug use. Lastly, I'm guessing you're aware that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the US. @@AlmostRetiredinMexico OH yes, the gun smuggling is definitely our fault. I'm retired U.S. military and know the issues we have with the FBI, CIA and even amongst military ranks. Technically crossing illegally makes you a criminal, but not all, but some are hardened criminals from countries all over the world. I was stationed in Central America and am very aware of the activity through the Darien Gap in Panama. Also, Guatemala and Mexico don't like illegals either. I would see on the news in Honduras that Guatemala would send 1000s of police to their border and these illegals would put women and children first to protect the men from the resistance at the border. If that doesn't make you a criminal, then what does? Lots of human trafficking originates in those areas too. Yes, I agree, it is a mix of criminals and victims in those groups. Remember I'm Mexican and my relatives did not cross illegally and here (Guadalajara)at the U.S. Consulate many Mexicans are crossing legally by obtaining a visa. If there's a need to jump the wall, then they should seek asylum legally. Trump is right. Those who push women and children to build a wall of protection at the Guatemalan, Mexican and U.S. borders are criminals. Many rapes are committed in route northward as well. I've seen all this crime or victims of it at the Texan border and in Central America. Biden doesn't care by ignoring the problem and becoming an enabling authority.

Go to Fort Lauderdale, hundreds of yachts valued in the hundreds of millions. Most flying Trump flags.
