Just found your channel (a few others started me out on this journey), and this is so perfect! I am literally painfully recovering from clearing out my linen closet, which took me five exhausting days. It was packed like concrete with “Linens,” “Cleaning Supplies,” and “Stuff.” At one point I had all the “Stuff” piled on my dining room table and just put my head down on the table and cried. The key to keep going for me was the question “If I were moving into a space half this size, would I bother to pack this thing up and take it with me?” That’s been helping me get pretty ruthless. My linen closet is now beautifully useful. I pat myself on the back and say “Nice job, Marti!” every time I open it!! Thank you for being REAL about how HARD this is!

My best tip is to join a Buy Nothing group. You make friends in your community and get to know that your stuff is going to a good home. This has really helped me move along things that caused me to have decluttering paralysis where I couldn't even begin decluttering because I had nowhere for it to go. I've used this for things that I need to let go but mentally can't donate, especially if I have no one to give it to like craft supplies for a niche hobby or a sentimental item. It's also great for books because you can get a book then immediately give it back out again (great for hot books when the library doesn't have enough copies!)

My friend did a similar thing when she moved. She made a group chat of several friends that might like some of the things she decluttered. She posted pics of the items and whoever wanted it claimed it. This way everyone got what they wanted.

Ugh, i dread that moment so much when you take a breather, look around and realise you have made things so much worse in order to make it better. I know it's part of the process, but every time it feels like a whole new mountain to climb.

It's so important to keep it real! With a 21 months old toddler, taking stuff out is not easy. And living in a house where also my parents and granny have their flats, the clutter is everyone's everywhere. I had my friends help us clear a mini-attic where my parents stored old stuff including baby clothes and mum's school stuff. It wasn't left out in the rooms for a few days. The clothes boxes were out for a month until I had enough energy to deal with the clothes, show some of them to mum to have some decluttering approved and store the memorable ones... all with the little one "helping". The school stuff is still out. Mum is not exactly ready to part with most of her stuff even in her own flat... We need the space for beb's future bedroom! (I hope less is going back to the attic...) But We took several bags to the charity (it took us two weeks to remember to take them to the car...) and I have some more now. It's small steps. Sometimes so small as tossing out two random things from a shelve. We'll get there... (and it won't ever look minimalistic, we're not like that. But more functional, yes!)

I have found that I suffer from decision fatigue. I cannot undertake anything more than one drawer or one shelf in a cupboard at a time.

Huge win! I got through a pile of boxes in the basement from moving and Amazon and various things that had accumulated for years! 😳 Unfortunately found my old computer in a box that was buried underneath that previously got flooded. 🤦‍♀️ 😭 So I have to figure out if I can salvage the info on it. It had been missing and I had no clue it was there I literally thought it all was trash and my inability to work on it fully made it a big loss potentially. Threw it in a bin with moisture suckers. I am not sure if water got into it but the box definitely got wet. I am assuming it got wet at some point. 🤦‍♀️ Oh and I cut up and wrapped up carpeting that also was ruined. I just have to put the stuff out for trash not by bit. Don't want to overwhelm the garbage folks.

You are absolutely right about the emotional exhaustion from intense decluttering, and the decision making required. Worthwhile, but not easy!

The ABSOLUTE CHAOS before peace was so overwhelming. « I can do the bathroom in one afternoon ». Several days later… still piles and trash everywhere. BUT, so worth it!! Just wasn’t expecting it, so it’s great advice :)

Yes, you're absolutely right! At around the 7 minute mark. All that judgement comes crashing down and just crushes you ... P.S. At least I've been working on guilt. It's now a lot easier for me to declutter the gifts I've received from family.

I need encouragement. I have piles of photos I am thinning. I have piles of Christmas decor for a volunteer charity event. I have cleaning to do, babysitting for family, and tech to learn. Yikes. Keep up the encouragement. You have helped me. Thank you.

So the new stuff that comes it, which could cause new clutter - give it a destination, a place to eventually be. So a bill from a utility goes to a place to be paid, once paid that can be kept for the year in the tax folder, then is kept for a further year in case of problems, but after that is destroyed. There are a number of different paths for different incoming streams of clutter, note them down, come to a decision on which, where, what why, when, how they can be de-cluttered. Note your methods and try to match your the streams of incoming clutter to those streams.

She rubs her head, you rub her belly -- it's easier that way. So, the thing that no one has prepared me for is the accidental tidy. On the one hand, it's nice, because TIDY! On the other hand, it's discouraging because it goes fast and easy, and it is easy to maintain, afterward. Yesterday, I had another accidental tidy. I put away a pile in the corner of things that go in the sewing room -- which was planned, but it happened when I accidentally tidied up the top of the sewing room closet. I hadn't planned to tidy those two shelves, it's a lot of my oldest's things, and I don't use or need those shelves. But something fell off the shelf, and I thought, if I just straighten up the books, there will be more room and little things won't be falling off all the time. When I went to straighten the books, I realized that more than a few things had been tossed up there that can go in the actual playroom because they belong to the other kids. And then I came across the Halloween bits -- animal ears, masks, decorations. The next thing I know, I've accidentally cleaned that shelves. . . IT LOOKS REALLY NICE! (Then I turn around and there are the piles I've been working on for months.) My most successful tidies seem to be the accidental ones. I accidentally tidied my plastic bags. I accidentally tidied my towels. I accidentally my pantry, and now I accidentally tidied this shelf. 😐 My intentional tidies have been super successful -- my intentional tidies, however -- well, the phrase Slog through Hell comes to mind. If I could just figure out how to accidentally tidy everything.
