Smash is designed as a party game which means effects that make it more exciting, RNG, and comeback mechanics are thrown in just because they can. Even Melee, as amazing as it is, has random shit like Peach Turnips. RoA has all this jank that makes it truly unique and interesting. Yet it does so in a way that doesn't sacrifice its competitive integrity. It stays interesting but doesn't confuse interesting with unpredictable. For that I will always prefer Rivals. I can lose and never blame some BS I had no control over
@periclescomoeddie5215
@periclescomoeddie5215 3 жыл бұрын
Smash is DEFINETELY better for non competitives, it has way more solo modes, it has items, and TONS of little details (like Ice Climbers not sliding on ice). But as a competitive game, I think Rivals is better. It has quicker gamplay, it's way more balanced, and the online is at least better than Smashes online. Also, the ranked mode is much better.

Another Tech; is a Ukemi; where you can Roll out the way when you hit the ground; if you press the Dodge Button at the right time. Forsburn's Smoke also obscures the Stage. A Character that can hide an entire Stage from view; should not be taken lightly. Eliana's Steam & Overheat Smashes are useable in Mid Air & Ground; effectively making her a Character with the best of both worlds: Ground & Air Smashes.

My favorite mechanic by far is that you don’t need to mash out of things, such a fucking stupid thing that can damage your controller and your hands. Least favorite has to be the lack of a ledge, just cause I’m not good and it’s very difficult to get back to stage sometimes without using a very laggy and usually very punishable up special

I already play rivals a lot, it's my most played steam game with over 500 hours in total (nowadays always on my steamdeck), most of it is with steam workshop though but that is just me being primarely on the workshop players side of the community, but anyway even with this much total playtime it's still pretty usefull to return to the basics every once in a while, also for the base roster (i said i'm primarily on the workshop players side of the community but i don't play with only workshop content, i do play as base roster characters sometimes) i'm a kragg main, probably because kragg is the most simple & keeping it simple suits me the best

Really fun, clean video. I want to ask though: why are RAR and DACUS excluded from the "basic mechanics" section? As a big melee player, these have a *huge* impact on how I play rivals vs. Melee. Just curious as to your thought process there.
@atWisely
@atWisely 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, that's a great question! I only included techs that aren't in any Smash title in the basic mechanics part, since the video is aimed at folks who already know Smash. Everything I put in are totally unique to Rivals. RAR and DACUS have been in Smash since Brawl, though I believe Ult removed DACUSes. If I was making a more general "how to play" video that really went into neutral theory, punish game, recovery mixups, etc, I would 100% include them.
@drakoz254
@drakoz254 3 жыл бұрын
That makes total sense! I bet an ult player coming to RoA would be like "what are you talking about, of course you can rar" if you mentioned it. For what it's worth, with the pedigree shown by this video, i can only hope you make a similarly good "how to play" video. :)

As a Ness/Lucas player in Smash Bros., I found Absa to be quite comfortable for me to play. She has a similar floaty feel and weight as the EarthBound characters do in Smash. A few of her moves kind of resemble theirs, like her fair is like Lucas' and her bair is like Ness'. She is also good at edgeguarding, because of her cloud and the options you can do with it. She is very much a "zoner" type of character, but can still get some good combos off of her airials. Before I began playing Rivals of Aether, I considered Absa as a strong contender for what character I would use and practice due to her playstyle and stats. I was just looking at how I play and what I'm used to in Smash, and applying it to Rivals. I will say that I do enjoy playing Absa, and she's usually the character I choose whenever I play the game. If you play Ness and/or Lucas in Smash and are considering picking up Rivals, I recommend to definitely try Absa out. It's possible that you will probably like the way she feels. But if she doesn't feel good, it's okay to try someone else out. Just choose whoever feels best for you.

Rivals is extremely open on what controllers people use. Even in just the top players, you'll see people use Gamecube, Xbox, PS4, Switch Pro, keyboard, and Smashbox. Are you looking for a specific suggestion?

I've used three of them. I used to use Xbox, then I switched to a Gamecube controller with an adapter for a long time. That was my preferred method until I started having hand problems, so I switched to a Smashbox this year.

A few of the best players in the world use keyboard! It might not be as intuitive as a controller, but it still works great

@@atWisely "You hit your opponent and the game freezes you for a second" so there are effectively more recovery frames after the move on hit/block versus if you had just wiffed it? But also those extra frames are cancelable by falling?
@atWisely
@atWisely 3 жыл бұрын
You're not cancelling the frames by falling, those frames are the window for you to do the fast fall input. Every fighting game has hit lag to make it looks like a move has more impact. By recovery, it sounds like you're talking about the ending of an animation, which is a totally different thing. In fact, Rivals *adds* recovery frames on whiffed attacks to deter folks from just throwing out moves hoping they'll connect.

"If you're coming from Smash and checking it out, here's the beginner's guide to some Rivals specific mechanics and key features. Not the end-all-be-all training video, but it should give you a solid kickstart towards learning the game. Think of this as Rivals 102, if 101 was just basic platform fighting game mechanics." That's the description of the video and I mention it in the intro too. The game has a fantastic in-game tutorial, it didn't make sense to start from "Hit your opponent to knock them off the stage".

@@atWisely okay, but "Smash community" does not mean "Pro melee community" talking about parries or walljumps first and then working your way to the imo way more nebulous and sometimes useless idea of wavedashing works a lot better for even a 102 "Okay, lesson one, horizontal wavedashing" just gonna hit any newcomer to the game like a sack of bricks and give them the impression its 10x more technical than it is also the video is titled "Before you play" you think mfers are gonna be fresh off the tutorial, already having bought it?

My dude, wavedashing is just 2 buttons plus a direction, it's extremely simple. Unless you are quite literally 7 years old, its not that hard of a concept to grasp. What did you want him to start with? How to jump?
