What both Russia as well as China forgot is the west built financial powerhouses over a period of time, not merely in 20 years. The US in particular survived WWII unscathed with a huge arsenal of not only weapons, but technology and wealth around the globe, but it allowed billions of people to rise from poverty. It wasn't fair for everyone, but nothing ever really is when it comes to building wealth and global domination. They, Russia and China seem to want all of that without proving themselves as a force for good for the world at large nor even for their own citizens..The west has never been completely innocent everywhere and not everyone has been treated wonderfully, but I don't recall any threats of nuclear anhilation over it. .The grand opportunity of global prosperity was at least on the table for anyone who could achieve it and both Russia and China had the opportunity more than anyone else. Russia blew it and China is well on the way to blowing it as well. Stealing everything not nailed down is no way to make friends and influence people.

& BTW on the topic of John Maersheimer ... Ukrainian voices like Operator Starsky despise Maersheimer, in their eyes he's just a "russia apologist", bc he's basically saying "oh, we/the West have sent confusing signals to poor putin and that's why he felt forced to k¡ll millions", as if putin/russia were these mentally challenged people/patients, who tend to take everything the wrong way by far too easily. Which just isn't true, Ukraine applied for NATO membership for the first time roughly in ~2008 (I believe) and Ukraine was rejected back then, so there were no "confusing western signals" to russia at all IMO. I'm actually dumbfounded, that Maersheimer is still allowed to teach his bs in US schools/universities. In 2022, I went through a very short phase of watching his content and partially sharing his opinions, but I ended up telling myself "nope no way, whatever he says doesn't justify at all russia first invading Crimea and then starting their full scale invasion of Ukraine ~1000+ days ago!" Admittedly Maersheimer is a very persuasive individual and of course I can see, why people fall for his arguments, bc he's a professor or something ... but his arguments only work on an audience, who's willing to fully trust his judgements, doesn't have any spare time to dig deeper into historic events and already tends to "two side" russia and Ukraine, referring to the 2 russian invasions of Ukraine, as if russia would need a specific reason for trying to rebuild their so called "lost empire". Maersheimer has mostly russian and pro-ru fans, bc they feel vindicated and united in their shared dislike for the West ... he doesn't seem to understand though, that his contrarian takes only work in the West with "free speech*", but his arguments certainly won't fly in russia proper, if he'd put himself out there to state: "it's mainly also russia's fault".🤦 * Whatever we in the West might define and understand as "free speech", which seems to be a very wishy washy thing all together and super hard to explain for most of us ... the russians mostly love "free speech", when it benefits them greatly, other than that they dislike it a lot and they made laws against it for people still living inside their country. Just look at the beef they've with Google/KZbin for quite some time now.

I can counter almost every point you make in this piece. First off, Ukraine asked to join NATO much earlier than 2008. The Russians had always made clear that this was unacceptable to them and there wasn't much appetite in Europe as the last round of NATO expansion was still ongoing. Ukraine has also allowed itself to join the 'Coalition of the willing' to invade Iraq. (little acknowledged fact... Apparently at that time invading a sovereign country at the behest of another wasn't a bad thing). However in 2006/7, the US began to revive the idea of NATO membership for Georgia and Ukraine. Part of this was spurred on by the reaction to Russia's brutal campaign in Chechnya, part of it by a view in the US establishment that Russia was weak. It did not matter that even the Ukrainian public was not asking for or in favour of membership of NATO nor was it even universally popular in the Ukrainian elite. Still in 2008, the US tabled the idea of Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO and even thought this was rejected by the Europeans who rightly understood this would be a red line to the Russians (the reasons having a lot to do with Russia's nuclear deterrence capabilities and the potential effect of deployment of US ABM and offensive missiles there). Still George Bush Jr. and the US browbeat the Europeans into declaring that Ukraine and Georgia WOULD become members of NATO even if not immediately. This was one of the reasons for the Russo Georgian war as the Georgians immediately sought to get back Abkhazia as you can't join NATO with disputed territories. I didn't need Mearsheimer to tell me any of this. I followed these events live because I was always interested in security and strategic studies. Mearsheimer's analysis which basically just says that Nations make decisions in self interest and not based on short term considerations was just anticipation of how the Russians would perceive these strategic threats that confronted them. The idea that this is somehow illegitimate or that to argue thus makes you a Russian puppet or shill is first off silly, but secondly relies for its bite, the idea that Russia is bad and US/Western propaganda is somehow better. As an African, I cannot tell you how ludicrous that is. How ludicrous is the idea that you are the good guys always seeking to promote good governance and harmony and that you would never take advantage of your strength and other's weakness if they allowed you too. Will the US abandon the base of Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands, and if not, why not? Why do you own a base halfway around the world from your territory on land effectively seized from native people's of Africa? Strategic interest. Why did you support the Apartheid SA and arm them while calling the ANC terrorists and funding wars in Angola, Mozambique and other parts of Southern Africa? Strategic interest in the cold war. You are not good people. The Russians would be mad to trust your word that a Ukraine in NATO wouldn't be used as a base from which to threaten them and exert influence over them. Ukraine was stupid to believe you.

It also has to become part of the global economy. I think Gorbachev understood what was needed but he could not get Russia out of the economic shambles it was in. He. tried to bridge the gap between the west and Russia but Russians were waiting in long bread lines as the Soviet Union collapsed. He is not well remembered well by Russians.

I think the Russians and Americans know each other to be very aggressive, cunning and ruthless when it comes to the bottom line survival issues of conflicts and wars. We respect each other.
