Thank you for explaining the difference between an "unplanned c-section" and an "emergency c-section". I gave birth to my son on May 18th, the labor process was amazing but ended in an emergency c-section. I labored WITHOUT an epidural and progressed at a great rate. I was able to move freely and utilize the tub and after getting out of the tub I progressed very quickly and had the urge to poop. My midwife knew it was time to check me and I was complete, 10 cm ready to push, and then in a split second she felt the babies cord. Before telling me she felt the cord she had me push while her hand was still inside and while I pushed she tried to push the cord back up behind the babies head. When I stopped pushing the babies head retracted and allowed more cord to come through. From that moment it was chaos. She yelled "we've got a cord" and all the nurses came rushing in and very quickly ran me down to the OR (the OR on the labor and delivery floor had just been used). My midwife told my husband he had to stay behind and I didn't even get to say bye to him or anything. The entire time my midwife had to keep her hand inside to keep the babies head up and off the cord (she stayed there until they cut me open). Everything happened very quickly in the OR and it was all a blur but my midwife told me since I didn't have an epidural I had to be under general anesthesia. I never thought I would be so calm in a situation like that but somehow I managed to stay extremely calm through it all. They put me under and got my baby out and everything was okay. They OBGYN did cut my sons head when she cut me open, but it looks as though that will heal well. I am very thankful for my midwife who acted so quickly and the medical team that I had, my midwife felt the cord around 7:05pm and my son was born at 7:19pm. I had two vaginal deliveries before this delivery and I think it is very important for moms to educate themselves on c-sections because in a moments notice everything can change. Thank you for all of your content. Sincerely, Jes Gragg Hampton

I had the exact same experience last week!!! Umbilical cord prolapse during an otherwise super smooth 37 week planned induction for preeclampsia. Suddenly the nurse felt the cord and hit the alarm button and I was off to the OR with her riding my hospital bed, hand in me saving my girl. It was intense. Less than 15 minutes start to finish. The midwife apparently didn’t take her hand out until my baby was delivered via cesarean, and could feel a pulse in the cord the whole time. Midwives are amazing. And, just by chance, I had watched this video the morning of my birth!! It was the last one I watched. Thank you Bridget!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there, I hope you don't mind me asking about your experience. I'm due in a few more weeks and very anxious about possibly needing a c section as I am petrified of epidural and will request general if it's the only way I can deliver :( there's a lot of reasons my husband and I think it's just for the best. But I'm scared of how much I'll miss in the after period. 45 mins sounds like a long time for my husband to know what the gender is but not me lol and I'm just nervous of missing those first few minutes! Is it really around an hour that you're put out? What was that part like for you? Thanks so much for sharing your story and I'm so glad you and your baby are okay

i'm not gonna lie, i am in tears watching this. i'm almost 37 weeks along and found out this morning that my baby is breech. I am scheduled for an aversion on monday morning for them to try and turn her if she doesn't do it on her own but i know the possibility of needing a c-section is still very real....i have a deep and depraved fear of hospitals..i am even more afraid of surgery... though i would much prefer a birth center i have a history of postpartum hemorraging so i have to be in the hospital for my labor even if it goes smoothly. i wish i could say i feel more prepared after watching this but honestly I'm getting more anxious the more i think about it..i've never been more terrified..

I had a C-section due to concerning fetal heart rate. Me and baby were given time to see if either his heart rate improved or I could achieve 10cm... Neither of those things happened so C-section was the way to go. The team was great, they kept me calm the entire time.

As a fellow doula, i LOVE hearing you mention the part about small talk in the OR. I’ve seen this a lot with staff in a vaginal birth in the hospital setting as well- chit chat during pushed, which to me just feels so flippant and out of place!- but I guess they are around birth all day every day and it’s more routine for them. I have never seen this in a birth center setting.

Bridget, can you please make a video about planned c-sections? I know they seem less daunting than emergency ones, but that's now a reality for our upcoming birth and I can't find a lot of information to sort of guide us through what to expect and how not to get too panicky about it. Thank you so much 💕

I had an emergency c section on Sunday March 29, 2020 which was just eight days prior to this video going up! I wish it would have been up prior to since I did constantly watch all of Bridget’s videos every day up to and including the day of my emergency c section! This would have been so very helpful! Anyone who is feeling nervous about this possible happening I must say don’t be. I had a placenta abruption in the middle of the night. I woke up at 4:03 am with my underwear full of blood. I had all of my, my older daughter’s, and my husband’s bags already packed. We got out the door dropped my daughter off up the street at my sister in laws and went straight to the hospital. We called my doctor on the way and when we got there they had a team waiting for me at the emergency room. Again I woke up at 4:03 am and by 4:54 am my baby was born! I was so scared until they put me to sleep but they were so quick and efficient! Now mama and baby are both home and totally healthy. No further complications or issues at all. If anyone has any questions i would love to help ease your fears and answer them!

Daria Stoica I was 38 weeks + 3 days. I woke up once about ten minutes earlier and remember thinking I feel like I have to pee pretty bad but I’m so tired. I fell back asleep for about ten minutes and this time I knew I had to get up to use the bathroom. As soon as I sat up I felt a gush and I thought possibly it was my water breaking so I rushed into the bathroom to find my underwear soaked in blood. I did not have any pain (I did feel like the night before I was having Braxton Hicks contractions though but not anything like labor pains)

I had an emergency cesarean section on 35,5. Healthy pregnancy, baby head down..., but sad conditions...I thought I was stronger than I really was, ...I'd a very long exhausting flights to bring my oldest child from far country home on 35weeks+ of gestational age in cold very windy weather, with heavy bag, the flight back was delayed for several hours, me and my oldest kid get sick ( vomit in plane), after I came home I went to hospital, because a mucus plug fell out and I'd routine antenatal check. After medical mistakes and my missed preparation ( no enough knowledges and overtiredness)... it result in C-section:( with general anaesthesia.

Mine was an Emergency C-Section however the process are the same as planned C-section, except if your going Emergency means you have been through failure process of Normal birthing which lead you into this Emergency C-section but it's all worth it after you see the baby face and place on your chest all together, hear the cries for the first time

My first baby was a C-Section. I dilated to 8cm in 9 hours - They told me my husband could only join me when I was ready to push and to lay down through the whole labor process - as a young first time mum I trusted the staff blindy. At 8cm they prepared me for pushing, PDA, broke my water to make things go faster and got my hub. I pushed for an hour, but nothing happened I the doctor said the baby had to turn and slide down... But everytime she would guide him. He woud get back to the same position. My husband said ge could see the top of my baby’s head... then they said there was meconium and that was a sogn my baby was suffering... So I could either keep trying or have a C-Section. I was scared the baby would swallow the meconium... So I went for the C-Section. It all happened in Brazil... I still feel my birth process was badly conducted, I was left on my own... And that lack of support and guidance caused an unecessary C-Section. I’ll give borth in Germany in August and I hope I will be more in control of the sktuation this time around

I got induced with misoprostol because of high blood pressure at 38 weeks. My cervix was closed and not dilated at all. We waited and I was having some very weak contractions but had to have the c section ... I really wanted a vaginal birth. I hope that with my next baby I can do that. They only showed him to me and took him to get the vaccines , etc, my husband wasn't allowed in the OR but he was with our son after he was born. I held my baby almost two hours later 😭

That's almost exactly what happened to me except I was 37 weeks. I was induced for hypertension. They used this dilator called a cooks catheter, and it was the most painful thing, and it got me to 4 cm. They started pitocin, but 24 hours later, I was still at 4 cm. My baby's heart rate was dipping down during the contractions, and eventually it got bad enough that they said I needed a C-section. They told me later that he was in a bad position, and I believe the dilator pushed him out of my pelvis, because on an ultrasound a week prior, he was in a great position. I'm feeling very upset about it.

Kitty Monchkin so very true! I had to argue and get a second opinion on if I did or didn’t need a c section due to placenta previa. Turns out I was right and the placenta had moved enough that I could do a vaginal birth but had I not pushed for the second opinion they would have went right ahead and done the c section. It is sad to think they force people into c sections who don’t really medically need them

I had an induction that didn't work and after 60 hours ended up in an emergency C-section. That was 12 days ago. My baby is fine now, but his heartbeat was in the 50s for 4 minutes, and they told me he might not survive another contraction, so they convinced me to consent to it. I'm very depressed about it, because I didn't have the experience I had planned and prepared for.
@margithammer8835
@margithammer8835 2 жыл бұрын
@Oskar winters yours was even more emergent than mine. After that contraction passed, and I was in the OR, but they hadn't gone in yet, his heart beat went back to 120, I said, "are you sure we have to do this?" And they provided me the logic that convinced me: I was only 4 cm dilated, he was not tolerating the contractions, there was no way he could withstand the number of contractions it would take to deliver him vaginally. Afterwards, the OB told me that he was not in a position where he would have come out in his own (I think he was shoulder first or something, I'm still not clear on it.) She said his head was stuck on a fibroid, which was 3 cm when I first got pregnant, but was 6 cm when I was full term. I was mad because I knew that having a large fibroid puts the odds of a c-section close to 50%, but I had asked that specific questions to my parinatologist, and he said that it probably wouldn't be a problem because of it's location in my uterus. I think I'm most angry because I did research and asked specific questions about my situation, and I don't feel like I was given realistic expectations. I'm mad that I had to endure 60 hours of induced labor for nothing.

I wish i had seen this. I definitely did not need a c section. The hospital i was at every momma had an "emergency c section" only ond woman had a "normal birth" because it was her third childcand her lanour was 6 hours. I was only in labour 12 hours, and apparently was "too long". All the mommas on the ward also felt the same. They just wanted us in and out. They discharded us thd next day.. horrible experience.

I just had my first baby in January and what you experienced is pretty much similar to my experience when I had an emergency c -section except I did not experience a split uterus. My baby was stuck due to a small cervix and his heart rate had increased due to a high fever that I developed while in labor. While in the middle of delivery, my nurse had tested me for covid and I had tested positive and also had developed a uterine infection.

I want to offer another perspective. Doulas are not doctors and have different goals than midwives and Obgyns. They also don't have formal medical training and certainly not as vigorous training. Obgyns want to minimize risk to the mother and the fetus as much as possible. So in their mind, it's better to err on the side of safety. This means is why unplanned C-Sections happen. Here is an example, risk of infection increases greatly 24 hrs after the water breaks. So after the 24 hr mark, Obgyns are more likely to perform a C-Section. Is it worth the risk to mother and baby to try for vaginal delivery. Not to me. I see a lot of negativity about Csections in the comments. I've had a rough recovery from mine. But I still believe it was the best for me and my baby. And I hope people read more from less biased sources and don't feel so bad about having one.

You can refuse. Or tell them to give you more time. Ive had 2 prior c sections and my ob is supportive of me having a vbac. Weve discussed possibly using the foley bulb if i go overdue. However, its important to remember that your due date is only a guess date, and most babies are not born on that exact date. Its very normal for your baby to come a week later or even 2 weeks after your "due date". If you really dont want another c section, just know their ARE options available. Even if your doc isnt telling you. Do a bit of research. Its okay to say "im not comfortable with doing another c section right now" they can always do a NST if they are worried about the baby.

My doctor has been telling me that I'll need a c section literally the whole time I've been pregnant. The only reason he has given me for needing a c section is that my baby is on the bigger side. Right now my baby is 7lbs 10oz and I am currently a day away from being 37 weeks. He is predicting my baby will be in the 9lb range but won't give me any other option or even talk about letting me have my baby vaginal, which is what I want to do. Should I just switch doctors now and get someone else who will give me more information/ listen to me? Or should I just keep demanding that I am able to have my baby naturally until an emergency pops up to where then I would need a c section? My whole family and husbands family has had bigger babies and have had them naturally. I just don't understand why my doctor is pushing for a c section when I and my baby are both very healthy. I need help/ advice.

I’m so interested to know how much your baby ended up weighing! Drs are generally off by about 2lbs. It’s frustrating that they try to tell you they need to induce or the like because of a “Big baby” based on ultrasound 🙄

#BridgetTeyler I’m 35weeks and diagnosed with polyhydramnios. Doctors had given us to choose for elective section or in case we want to try vaginal birth. I always desired to have vaginal birth but recent diagnosis is confusing me. Your views on this would help me to make decisions. Please please help 😢

Why were they wanting to do a C-section? Was it fear of the cord wrapping around her neck or Prolapse? With my second child I had severe polydramnios and her birth was the best one of my 4. My water broke at 35 weeks at 2:30am and she was born at 6:55am. Because she was preterm she spent a few days in the NICU but was perfectly healthy. I hope everything went ok for you.

I just found out today at 35 weeks that I need a c-section due to the placenta covering the cervix . I am so nervous , never had a c-section 😭 I’ve had six vaginally. I’m actually pretty upset about it

Oh my that is so hard!!! I am so sorry! How did everything go? I just had a cesarean 2 days ago and I’ve been grieving it. My first 3 were all epidural free and so wonderful. I loved feeling labor. Pretty sure this is our last baby and was excited to end with the same empowering labor story as the previous 3. It’s been hard!

Thanks now i will be able to sue those doctors/obgyns who adore doing cs only to get additional money by tapping upon the fear of first time parents. I'm due soon, and i already told my partner not to accept emergency cs because the doc lie a lot.. All that they want is the cash, they don't care at all about their patients. It makes me so angry just thinking about that doc, after giving birth I'm gonna thank all the nice nurses who've been taking great care of me since day one, but I'll never thank that doc

I had an emergency section 29 days ago. I went to 6cms in 6-7 hours but had gushes of blood once I hit 6cms. Went to the hospital and was still losing blood so they had to do CFM. I wasn't able to use the birth pool either. My baby was posterior and 4kgs. My placenta was low lying until 36 weeks but my ultrasound at 40+6 weeks showed it was 5mm away from internal os. Bub was born at 41 weeks after 14 hours. I only got to 7cms in 5 hours with no pain relief and I was losing a lot of blood. Baby was perfectly fine and I felt okay just tired but because they didn't know the cause of the blood loss they said I needed a c section but had enough time to do a spinal so I could be awake. On my record it says "delayed 1st stage, intrapartum hemorrhage and obstructed labour". I am struggling to find any information on intrapatrum hemorrhage and I don't know if obstructed labour is the same as baby being too big for the birth canal. I think I could've had a successful vaginal birth if I hadn't lost so much blood and my team trusted me more. I'll be trying for a VBAC next time even though it isn't recommended.
