when there is a power outage as depicted in the video, and you give the solar inverter a bump to 'power on', two questions: 1. Does the Agate make sure power isn't being pushed back to the grid (for safety reasons) and does it matter age/type/model of inverter - as there are many. thanks

Hi Mark, thanks for your questions! 1. For our product, our software prevents power going into the grid. 2. The model type and parameters of the PV inverter will not affect the use of our product. If the inverter ages too much, it will naturally perform less well than a new one. Hope this helps!

We don't have much space for solar. We do have a small quiet generator that can do about 2000watts. Could this be set up to work like a UPS, and if the grid goes out, it would kick on the generator to keep it toped up, but have the battery for surge loads?

Hi, it depends on which type of generator, if the generator can automatically start, the generator can be set up like a UPS, but the battery will stand by caused by the generator is not good; if the generator cannot automatically start, this means you should operate it manually every time you need it.

I am waiting for permitting from my electric company in New Mexico. The utility company just said I must choose the "Backup Only" mode on the FranklinWH system in order for the permitting to move forward. Does this mean I will be locked out of the other modes on my system. Why would the electric company require this. Im not going to move forward if I cant control the modes of the Franklinwh unit. Has anyone else had this issue

In Back Up only mode, the FranklinWH system will still provide seamless power transfer and back up in the event of a grid outage. During Back Up only mode, the system will not discharge the batteries on a daily basis to offset home load electrical consumption as if it was set to Time of Use mode. You will still have full control of the other FranklinWH battery functions such as Smart Circuits module, Generator module and viewing of historical performance. Solar PV will still be available to recharge the aPower batteries, serve the home loads and net meter back to the grid.

Hi Mike! Normally we would recommend the power ratio of the PV system and the Franklin system to be 1:1. If your PV system has bigger power, we recommend installing more Franklin batteries to match your current PV system. Or, we have a system accessory called aPbox to solve excess power issues if you don't want to install too many batteries. Hope this helps!

This seems like a really good system. I just have two concerns. First is this is a AC coupled system. This would be amazing if you could also build a DC coupled system. In my current setup I'd need 8 to 10 of these batteries and there is only one space large enough outside (which I don't really want) to install these batteries. If this was a DC coupled system I'd just continue with my plan to build a battery house near my array that is 330' from the main house. The SolrEdge system will do this, but I'm limited to three batteries per inverter, so six batteries, and I'd have to change out both of my new inverters to Energy Hub inverters. The second issue I have it the average consumer can't just buy these. You guys are forcing people to go through your installer qualification in order to even buy the equipment. I won't be jumping through any hoops to by equipment I will be installing myself. So, I suggest either you make it easier to purchase directly from the distributor or I will have to seek an alternate battery source. Note, I do think the Agate is pretty amazing to do all the load balancing.

does the 16ms transfer time enough for sensitive electronics ? like small rack mount server or data storage device like NAS/SAN ? Are the caps inside the PSUs will able to handle that gap ?

If you have very sensitive electronics that need a CONSTANT AC supply, add a UPS at that device(s). The transfer time is likely the time needed for a large contactor (relay) to switch. It could be done with solid state switches at greater cost and less reliable operation. MSEE with 52 years of design under my belt.

Only thing I learnt was not to put all devices behind one single contactor/relay but separate those according to the sensitivity. However I'm still learning about these cool devices.

@@RayonWhittaker Hi Rayon, the aPower actually has 14.3 kWh and would reserve 0.7 kWh for the black-start function, which is to start the PV system when the grid is down. So we tell the market that aPower has 13.6 kWh storage.
