Hi doc, it’s me again. After a year of using .05% tretinoin, ngayon lang ako naka experience ng redness and flaking despite using it every other day and even if I use buffer like moisturizer. I noticed that I only experience redness and flakiness a couple of months ago when I stop using clindamycin toner on my face. Never change anything to my skin care routine except limiting my usage of clinda toner when I only have active acne.

Dr Ben Johnson says the plumping effects from retniol is due to irritation inflammation and self protective reactions of the skin, it stimulated collagen production in the EPIDERMIS but not actually thickening of the DERMIS where it counts. It needs to get to the dermis and be converted into tretionin, rather than irritate and artificially bloats the epidermis. Is this true?

@irenegaile
@irenegaile 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, as long as it comes from a reputable brand and it is BFAD approved or certified, it should be ok. The problem with repackaged and unbranded or unregulated products (not just tretinoin) is that you cannot be sure of the quality, consistency, safety and efficacy of the product.

Depends on the concentration :) Adapalene 1% is equivalent to somewhere in between tretinoin 0.025 and 0.05%. Adapalene is more anti-acne, while tretinoin is both anti-acne and anti-aging and can give you a little more side effects than adapalene :)

Granactive retinol is hydroxypinacolone retinoate the mildest form of retinol kaya mataas ang percentage, this is different from the retinol used in other brands. I agree that you start with low concentration, in the case of granactive retinol you can actually start with 2% pero slowly like every other night muna bago gabi gabi. If you are using retinol lgn talaga i recommend starting with 0.1 up to 0.3% muna before increasing.

When you’re starting a retinol avoid sunlight use the small does not extra strain. Your skin will not tolerate so you want to start slowly and work your way up to the higher strength that will cause harm, flakiness, redness, etc. you also want to apply only a P size start slowly once a week or twice a week and work your way up. Where are you can wear it every night it’s gonna be a slow progress when you’re using retinol, you also wanna apply moisturizer wait 30 minutes after you use retinol then play moisturizer that will help with the flakiness, irritation, redness do your research on KZbin video there’s tons of videos that will give you advice when you’re starting to use retinol.

Not Dr. Hailey, but I have some recommendations, hoping these are available to where you're from: 1. Some by Mi Retinol Intense eye cream( Korean brand; I think this is at 0.1%): This was the first ever retinol I used in my entire face even though this is only an eye cream since I figure that if it's meant for the thin under eye area to tolerate, there's a less probability of the other parts of my face to have some reaction. Used it for three months just to acclimate my skin to retinol. I'm now only using this in my under eye area. 2. Klued Skin Retinol(Local PH brand: available at 0.1 % and 0.5%): I'm now using the 0.1% variation of this since Dec 2022. No reaction to my face, using it every other day. 3. Good Molecules Gentle Retinol Cream(US brand; available at 0.1%): I heard, and read, some really good reviews about this. My sister is currently trying this product. 4. Dermorepubliq Retinol serum ( local brand; available at 1% and 2.5%): I'm using their Glycolic and Salicylic acid and they're good. Didn't try their retinol since the concentrations they offer is higher. 5.Cosrx Retinol Cream(0.1%); Retinol Oil (0.5%) (Korean brand): I've been using products from this brand to combat my acne during college. The only reason I haven't tried their retinol is because I recently discovered local brands which is way cheaper. All of these are available on their official websites, online shopping platforms, or even their own physical store. I suggest starting at the lowest concentration (0.1%) twice a week or maybe even once a week. Then build up you tolerance to thrice a week then every other day. Wait for months if you want to increase the concentration. I'm still using a 0.1% even though I've been using retinol since Sept last year since I also incorporated exfoliants (glycolic and salicylic acid) on my routine this January. In terms of dark marks, yes it does help because as Doc says, it works by helping the cell skin turnover. New skin= lighter marks. But it'll take time, so patience is needed (doing skin care religiously is a key too!) Incorporating AHA acids, like glycolic can help speed it up, but that's only if your skin can tolerate it. Only level up the concentration if your skin had finished building up tolerance. And don't forget to moisturize and apply SPF!! My ultimate advice: Go to a dermatologist if you want a faster and maybe even better result because they can give you something that is specifically meant for your skin. Good luck to you retinol journey!!

Doc, I just wanna ask. What is the ideal concentration of retinol? For beginner, is it okay to use 1% of retinol?
@irenegaile
@irenegaile 2 жыл бұрын
Best to start with lower concentration -- 0.25% -- then build up to 1% :) Some can tolerate even higher but IMO 1% should be ok as maintenance.

@@irenegaile Hi Doc Gaile! There is a popular serum locally which contains 2.5% retinol. Is that an optimized or specially formulated kind and is it safe? Since you've mentioned to start at just 0.25% and gradually increase it to 1%, I find 2.5% quite high.

Doc, is it okay to use a retinol eye cream on your lips to achieve the same results in terms of reduced hyperpigmentation?
@irenegaile

Eye creams usually contain low concentrations, so it would probably be ok but you may also want to try other lightening treatments if hindi mag work. You can also consult so you will know your other options.

Depends on which concentration and consistency you prefer. Ako since i have dry skin I tend to use creams over serums but if you have oily skin and are more tolerant pwede naman serum. Serums usually have higher concentration of ingredients than creams.

Most products for the face are good enough to use in the eye area except those that contain high concentrations of products that can potentially irritate - exfoliants, retinoids. For the eye area i recommend using 0.1% retinol for starters.

If you already have a higher percentage retinol that u are using for your face, you may dilute it with a moisturizer and apply in the eye area
