I didn't start learning music theory until I had played guitar for a few years. Learning how keys and scales work has been so helpful for me.

According to this guy I’m more intermediate than beginner! Im trying to officially and confidently close the door on being a beginner. Good video!

I think once you can play ten songs (easy three four chord) you are no longer a beginner. But the road from intermediate to pro is long. Keep adding one more song and one more chord, but learning bar and caged is the next level. Bar chords contain triads of caged chords that you eventually will use for lead outlining chord changes. One step at a time and enjoy the journey

As always, thank you. If any chance you could guide us to create a practice routine for late beginners / intermediate hobby guitarists, that would be awesome!

Andrew, By now I have spent 5+ hours, perhaps even 10 hours, researching how to gauge if I am an intermediate guitarist. Your video is concretely, one of the best. You have listed 10 quantifiable skills that can be mastered. Great stuff. The only two things I would add would be: 1) An intermediate guitarist can read sheet music and play a song quickly. 2) An intermediate guitarist can jam with other intermediate guitarists reading sheet music. I'm not an expert. I am an advanced beginner who has practiced/played 180+ days in a row. Your video is valuable, glad I found it on KZbin. I do hope my feedback was useful. Thanks Again for Your Video.

I appreciate that! Though, I'd disagree on the two points you mentioned since those depend entirely on what your goals are as a guitar player.

What a great video, Andrew. I especially love number 10. That's not advice you hear a lot of teachers give. I'm entering my intermediate phase and this was a great way to recap everything I've learned so far. I can't wait to see your channel blow up bigger than it is. You're really a great teacher, probably one of the best I've seen on youtube. The way you explain concepts is unparalleled. Keep up the good work!

i was taught WITH the stop/start method. they told me practice makes permanent so i shouldn't get into the habit of playing sloppy. if you mess up substantially practicing at home, you're better off just going back because there are a few songs that i was learning back when i couldn't use my pinkie as much so i substituted my ring finger and now my muscle memory forces me to use my ring finger for those songs every time. if you stick with a "show must go on" mentality you're likely to start caring more about finishing the song rather than actually playing it correctly or making it sound good

This video is gold. I think that we can add maybe one more thing to the topic and that is playing with other people. This days a lot of guitarists are just bedroom players and they are missing the important part which is exchanging ideas/knowledge with other musicians while jamming together.

Are there actually people out there that are “scared” of music theory. It’s seems every single one of the thousands of KZbin videos, as soon as the speaker says the word “theory” they have to immediately give a disclaimer. It literally means knowledge. I don’t get what the drama is.
@andrewclarkeguitar
@andrewclarkeguitar 10 ай бұрын
Thanks to things like Tabs, you can get a really long way without any theory. It's not so easy for other insturments where music theory is more mandatory. Because of this, guitarists tend to avoid it theory. I don't think there's a literal fear of it, but I know a lot of technically proficient players with years of experience who have stayed away from it. I was in bands and gigging regularly for years before I started learning theory and even though I felt pretty good about my playing, it allowed me to get over some pretty major plateaus.
