For the most part, I think your prices are pretty spot on. I can get most at MSRP or sometimes below. The only exception is Wellers antique 107; unless you’re willing to stand in line for two hours or three hours or win a lottery you’re not gonna find it for less than $150.

Crazy world since I can find 107 almost weekly in Ohio at MSRP
@jeromepeters69358 ай бұрын
In the DMV, one can only find the prices you sighted at Allocated Bourbon Drops. I get your point; Fear of Missing Out(FOMO) only raises the price and lowers one's value. At MSRP, all of these bottles are good, some even great. The problem is that most would never even try a bottle holding onto your recommendations. Pay what you are comfortable paying, but open the bottles and drink. In my opinion it is the "collectors" that have raised the prices and created the secondary culture that distributors have taken advantage of.

I live 30 miles from the Buffalo Trace distillery. In central KY, of those (excluding the rye) you'll only find Buffalo Trace bourbon and maybe, though rarely, SR Weller's. For the rest, you won't find, but if you did, they'd be 2x to 3x MSRP, maybe more. I can go to the BT distillery and get what they ration (1 bottle per 3 months) at a good price, otherwise, I hunt for higher-end bourbon away from central KY. It's just been a dead-zone, lately.

My experience with allocation has been positive and I frequently find bottles at MSRP. I hunt in Houston. I have never paid secondary prices. People need to understand that if you put in the time and effort, you will eventually score some bottles at retail. I have probably 50 or so bottles of the "hard to find" stuff. Multiple EHT Small batch and single barrel. A few straight rye and one barrel proof. Several blantons, blantons gold, and about 10 eagle rare. Two bottles of stagg and Weller 107, full proof, 12, and plenty of special reserve. Yes some are from waiting in line for a few hours ,but others are from frequently stopping in the larger liquor stores and getting lucky. Also, visiting with the smaller stores and buying a few store picks will increase your chances of being offered something special. Unfortunately, this is what allocation bourbon has come to. But hunting can be fun and you really feel good when you find and pay retail. Top tier broubons are a completely different story.

Where I live Weller SR, Buffalo Trace, and Sazerac Rye can be found on the shelf for just under $30 to as high as $35 depending on which bottle we're talking about. Eagle Rare can also be found on the shelf for just under $40. Blanton's is $80-$90, E.H. Taylor is $100+, and Antique 107 is insane at $180+. I'm fine with paying those prices for SR, BT, Sazerac, ER, and E.H. Taylor at right around $100, but I can't justify the prices for the rest.

BT I see less but again not looking for it. I am looking for a Stagg but since I don’t camp I probably won’t ever get one so it is what it is. Same thing with EHT in Ohio it drops a lot but since I don’t stand in line I’m not getting one. I’m pretty good with what I get and those bottles are always on the shelf and easy on my wallet. Trace: - Can get at or very near MSRP in Jersey pretty easy with some looking. Weller SR... Seen like twice in tristate area... and they wanted over $100 for it... But it is literally the cheapest pour at my local whiskey bar... (Tied with WT101 @ $8/2oz... and the WT101 is far better) and it tastes like it. So whatever. Sazerac I see pretty much all the time. Eagle Rare and Blantons... occasionally seen at about 2x markups in DE. EH Tay... seen a time or two at ~3x markup in DE. Weller 107... never seen. So BT, ER and Blantons drop here fairly often. I don't buy BT anymore. I buy every ER they will sell me, and I'll buy every Blantons they'll sell me till I finish out my topper collection, but then I'll take the brewzle route... buy for gifts/friends. These videos are challenging. Because they are so region dependent. I think it’s bad medicine to tell people what they should pay, because bourbon markets are super super local. Micro economics 101. For example. In Michigan, you will not find any of these at or even close to MSRP other than Buffalo trace and baby saz. I regularly pay 50-60 for Weller SR but I see it for 99 often. 107 is a buy at less than 120 and so is blantons. EH Taylor small batch is a total unicorn and it’s usually in the 120 range. Weirdly eagle rare is usually 40-50 and I bought a case of store picks for 65. If I wasn’t paying within 10 of any of these prices, you aren’t collecting bourbon period unless you want shelf product. On the flip side, we have Joseph magnus cigar blend everywhere for 160 and jack single barrel barrel proof rye for 70. Like I say, micro economics
