You act like racism isn`t the case on other continents. I´m pretty sure that especially Germany, due to our history, is one of the countries with the least amount of racism. However, a lot of native Germans feel like their culture is violently replaced with middle eastern / african / muslim culture. We don´t want that. And sadly we have a lot of people with migrant background who shit on our country and tell you how much their country of origin is. They don`t wear the jersey with pride and use our national squad to advance in their club career. Özil was one of those cases.

German here. The problem of the poll is that there was only a polarising yes or no. It was not possible to answer: what a dumb effin' question, or: it doesn't effin' matter. @falke3090
@falke3090 2 ай бұрын
The Yes/No character of the question also makes it that right-wing populists can use any outcome for their purpose. They will see the majority (79%) saying No as prove that the general public wants more immigrants and as confirmation of that whole Great replacement conspiracy they're spreading. So they can even use that to justify their so-called "resistance" and potentially justify violence.

What you mean is that it's a societal construction instead of being a scientific category. Race isn't based on skin colour, but race as a imaginative construct does shape and form many things and social relations in the world and therefore to say that it "only exists in language" is too short-sighted and closes of some necessary avenues of discourse about the topic.

They do not work for the dfb. If they would than yeah, it would've been dumb. But it's not the job of (sport) journalists to pick the right moment for the National Team. It's their job to uncover the truth and in some regards to make people face it. Doing something like this while the focus on the national team is as big as it gets is exacly the right moment to get as much attention as possible. So no, it's not stupid, it's clever. Just not what the national team needs, but like I said that can't be a factor in journalism.

@@KleineralsDrei So you're basically saying Germans generally shouldn't really be supportive of their own team (and that at a home tournament ffs), or what? Instead they should make it even harder + possibly spoil a once in a lifetime football party for their own players..? And for what reason exactly..? Short-term personal monetary interests? Where's the emphathy and decency? I mean they didn't even break any news with that poll like you make it seem...What about the interests of the millions of other peoples who want to enjoy their tournament in peace and togetherness and focus on the joy of the sport? I mean those milllions after all are paying a monthly fee for that broadcasting service. How about a poll whether the documentary should be published or not? And also what about general decency + respect for the players? Why not have a documentary about a less controversial topic or at least go on about it with a different tone? Why not publish it right after AFTER the tournament or some weeks prior to it? So many different approaches out there and you literally have chosen to defend the worst possible approach. And I mean nothing of it even is news that needs to be shed light on for the people to see... so why stir it all up right now before a home tournament. The worst thing is that that those who've made that documentary probably aren't even football fans but then they have to spoil an upcoming tournament for football fans AND the players!

This poll is part of a TV documentary about racism in German football. There is a discussion about poll this in Germany, obviously. One part of the reality is, that there is a huge problem with racism. On every football pitch you can hear slurs and shit. I visit amateur games in Germany on a regular basis. We have a growing number of people who elect racist parties and are openly racist in public without being ashamed. It's totally believable to have 20+ percent assholes here. That's the sad part. The national team wants support a good atmosphere, I get it, but there are so many people who talk shit about this team.
@MontyESA

The exact motivation, according to today "11freunde" stream (a German football magazine): The journalists, shooting the documentary, used statements from interviews with football visitors that were openly racist and wanted to prevent criticism to use anecdotal quotes and events to dramatize the problem. So they decided to request this representative poll to get an additional metric.

First step in solving a problem is admitting that there is a problem... I don't think the ARD is to blame for asking a question, which, predictably, got a lot of wrong - and yes, there is a clear wrong here - answers. Roughly the number of people wanting to vote for the far-right AfD in Germany responded predictably racist. That is something we have to deal with. The greatest strength of Germany has always been to be brutally honest. We looked at ourselves after World War 2 and realized we have to do something very different. And we did. Now Poland begs Germany to build up a military, because now we are the good guys. But that didn't happen because we put our heads in the sand and ignored the crimes of the 30s and 40s. We did that after World War 1, which resulted in WW2 in the first place. No, we looked at ourselves honestly and learned from our past, as we didn't want the future to rhyme. I think asking this question is a very good thing. Living in a fantasy world, in which my nation is always the greatest, huge and tremendous and always comes first, that kind of thinking leads to disaster. In order to grow you need to accept the growing pains. You need to be willing to admit the uncomfortable truths and not get yourself sucked in by dishonest media outlets who tell you comfortable lies, while claiming to be fair and balanced. If a nation is to succeed, it has to ask the uncomfortable questions in order to find problems in reality. And the reality is: Germany still has a racism problem.

For some Context: There is historically some controversy going back to Gerald Asamoah and David Odonkor being racially abused for being in the national team from the begin of the 2000s. It gained more traction after a leading politician german right wing party AfD said something along the lines of " i dont want Jerome Boateng as my neighbor" which sparked quite the controversy in Germany. There was also another case where Mesut Özil said germans are only accepting him as german when the national team wins. Since then it is a topic in german media from time to time. The current poll is from a Documentary by said ARD regarding racism in german football where they Interview Asamoah, Jonathan Tah and Shkodran Mustafi regarding their experience.

@@NR-fd9wv All great points. The people that lived in the 13 colonies predated the "idea" that founded the US. So therefore it was a PEOPLE that fought the wars and founded a nation. When America was founded the "white" population was 99% English and 95% protestant Christian. Still the closest thing to American culture is British culture. Look up how Ben Franklin viewed even German immigrants. Short story, he hated it. If America was just an idea then we would revoke citizenship being "unAmerican" but we do not. People can assimilate overtime, hardly ay German immigrants speak German anymore and that is a good thing. Hopefully the same thing happens with recent European immigrants. All I'm staying is that if you snap your fingers and French people started eating sushi with chopsticks it would still be France because the people are the same. if you replace 100% of the population with black Africans (or Russians etc.) it would not be France. If the throughline for the nation is the culture right now then German peasants living in Koln 100 years ago would not be German by your standard.

The reason for this poll was that they experienced a surprisingly high number of racist remarks while working on a documentary about the German national team. Although the subject of the documentary was not primarily racism/xenophobia, they wanted to find out whether this perceived racism was accidental/anecdotal or systemic. So they designed this poll to get to the bottom of racism in German consumers of football.

You do get similar surveys of acceptance of LGBT issues, some of which are carried out by LGBT associations. While the reading can be depressing, if you carry them out regularly and see an increase in acceptance, then that is a huge positive as you can show that things are improving. Nepal, for example, was 67th in the world for LGBT acceptance and is now in the top 10 in the world. These things help politicians push for LGBT rights, marriage, etc. And Nepal now has an out gay man as the top head of their High Court. So, while it's depressing to see that 21% of Germans polled are (essentially) racist, if they repeat it in ten years and discover that that number is now just 11%, then the benefit of having the poll becomes more apparent. However, doing this before an international tournament, in your own country, is pretty stupid, and will certainly make some of the black fans and players from other countries feel a llittle more uneasy when walking around the streets of Berlin or Munich....

surveys can be screwed in just how the questions are asked, you could make surveys that would result in 100% racism in any country or you only poll a certain demographic, and considering the one responsible for this survey its simple rage bait

@@felixmustermann790 But how different is it to when people are surveyed on "how would you feel if your son came out as gay" and "do you think that a marriage should only be between a man and a woman"? Surveys like that have been very helpful in showing the world becoming a more tolerant place (except perhaps in places like Russia, but everyone's scared to say how they really feel there).

In - very lukewarm! - defense of the poll: the ard made a documentary about how Germany feels before the Euro at home (or something). They questioned a few people and stumbled across some racist rhetoric. So they decided to not just leave it up to that but look, if that one racist was in any way representative or just the odd one out - and made a poll where the questioned random voters in Germany. In my opinion the questions are very suggestive and one can argue whether the poll was really necessary, but also: It feels a bit like killing the messenger here. We just don’t really like to admit that yes, we have a bit of a radical right problem at the moment (like many other countries, I presume).

I'm gonna get a bit defensive here because I work more or less close to the people who made the documentation, and the poll in it. So the poll has been taken kinda out of context but not really. What had happened is that the author talked to people on the street and encountered multiple people saying, even while fully aware they were beeing filmed for the state television ARD, that they want more "German" people in the German national team. And when questioned further, some explicitly said, more white (and I think blond but don't quote on that one) people. With that experience, the team wanted to find out whether these thoughts are widespread across the German public or not. And how do you test that if not making it a question in a poll? The author has talked about the poll and the documenatry on German television and put that into more context than I ever could, and it is also further contextualized in the documentary - but obviously not everyone who sees the poll has watched the documentary, you obviously havn't because it is in German and does not have English subtitles (yet?). And I understand that Julian Nagelsmann is not happy about the poll, and talking about the poll without the context of the documentary to promote it was also a dumb move - but racism is a problem. And most of your video as well is about how dumb that statement is. But 21% of people polled picked that answer. That is 1/5th of the questioned people that have chosen to agree to this clearly racist statement. So it's not really the poll that's the problem here, it's the racist tendencies that the German people exhibit, isn't it? You have to incorporate extreme opinions whenever you poll opinions so people can disagree. Racist tendencies are on the rise in Germany generally, so I think it is fair to find out how that translates to people talking or thinking about the German national team. (And the documentary also shows people who do not agree with that sentiment, and the author has told that especially kids playing football absolutly do not share these beliefs. It's not like nobodys talking about tolerant people.) Happy to talk with people who want to argue constructively about it more in the comments - I also don't think everything went perfect with the documentary or the poll. I can't really give more context than you can get yourself though, unfortunately - all I did was watch the documentary and watch a talk they had after the controvercy was already well on its way on Hart aber Fair (a German TV-talkshow). You can also watch the documentary right now in the ARD Mediathek, same with the talk (or you watch the documentary tomorrow on live TV).

It is heartbreaking when your mum insists that you do everything to respect the country, serve to improve it and keep out of trouble but no matter what, "natives" doing nothing with their lives can tell you that you don't belong because you don't look like them. That means this whole "good immigrant" thing is a myth, no matter what, there'll be some prick with a dumb analogy poorly explaining why you should "go home".

Oh man Z, there are several wrong things you aid in the video. Hope you read that and hope I can give you a little vit of context out of Germany for this. First of all: The did not just select 1300 people at the street. There was an scientific institute doing this survey and they did it there usual way, so this survey is absolutetly representive and done right. And by the way aksing over 1000 random selected people out of a sample you want to study there is scientificly ony a mistake range of about 2-3%. Then: This survey did not stand alone it was initiated by a young black german sports journalist who did it in the context of a documentarie series of several parts dealing with the integration of football and the special relationship footballers with a migration background have to their country and their national team. Former players like Gerald Asamoah and current players like Jonathan tah are featured in this documentary. These question are not the only questions in the survey but the main reason for them was, that the journalist met several people in his research that said exactly this things and he wanted to quantify how common this opinions are in Germany. Really, there is nothing wrong with it. Also I really wonder why everybody is criticizing the guys that made the poll the criticize that 1/5 of Germans are thinking like this. Why is it a problem to make racism public and not that there is racism? I dont get it.

Good take. Historically, a lot of elite football players have come from the poorer strata of society, and those strata tend to have a lot of immigrants and their descendants. And you're right that for some people it only becomes a problem if those sons of immigrants are black (or sometimes Arabic). The history of the best French football players is pretty telling, from Kopa to Lloris, including people like Platini, Genghini, Fernandez, Ginola, Cantona, Pires, Barthez, Hernandez or Griezmann, the French NT has had players with foreign origins among its lineup for a long time, but none of these guys are ever singled out because they're white.

They (ARD) did ask the question as a part of a documentory about systemic racism in German football and made the poll as a way to find out if the problem some people here in Germany have more complex problems regarding football players with migration backgrounds or not. After the poll, it seems confirmed that 21% just seem to be racist. And to clear that up: Julian Nagelsmann didn't dislike the question that was asked per sé, but the result. Germany currently has to deal with an uprise of right-wing extremists and neo-fascists, and that's an additional reason why the result of the poll is problematic.

I think the struggle people who feel this way are having is largely exacerbated by proportional representation, or perceived lack thereof, which is seemingly what this poll was trying to clumsily get at. Highest-level professional sports are not exactly model UNs, even accounting for legionnaires in team disciplines. Intersection of less favorable social status/prospects of 1st-2nd generation immigrants and some ethnicities' being genetically blessed with higher pain thresholds and better aerobic endurance (both important for football that's all running, jumping, falling and being hit) in people of African descent often results in more of them becoming successful athletes than would be strictly reflective of ethnic makeup of the region they represent. Plainly put, even in more prosperous countries, just like places like Uruguay, sports are often the only reasonable ticket to prosperity for those who have raw ability and few other comparable avenues, it's just that in places like Europe these trends are literally visible to the naked eye. Which then pisses off racists who think people who don't look like them are deliberately trying to take over representing them. The poll is still nauseating, though. ADR is the media company that did Russian sports testing labs investigation that sparked the doping scandal and bans, so it is surprising to see them engage in such yellow "reporting" trash.

The problem with such polls is that a certain part (East) of Germany and a certain demographic (older) are not too keen on other races. I speak from experience. The thing is that i would rather say it is more like 10 % rather than 23% but it depends where the poll was held. And everyone denying it just don`t want to remember how Gerald Asamoah was treated from a certain demographic when he played for the national team or other Racist things that happen in the lower leagues of German football. The greater problem for me is the denying from the rest of Germany that racism still exist to this day and that they want to prove that, just to fall on the face like in this example

1:30 Well, there have been noumerous articles and also a recent documentary from the same German state media outlet ARD about racism in professional sports in Germany, talking with athletes who very much think that there is problem with racism in the German FA and other German sports organizations. Edit, 1:49 : Rightwing politicians in Germany have often come up with the topic of non-white German football players and still are. The AfD (extreme right party) are actually promoting mass deportations and propagandize the racial and nationalist idea of "a German people", from which they try and exclude non-white Germans. Because of them (and the support for these ideas by a loud minority of the German population, who are open to extreme-right politics and blatant racism), this open racism unfortunately is always part of the debate in Germany surrounding big national football events.

Well, the issue here is just, people assuming how one might feel about their own nationality. Tbh even the way Zealand talks about it "You're born in Germany, you speak german, you feel german" that's simply putting words in people's mouths. Some immigrants feel that way, some really don't, and they have the right to. Sometimes they dont feel accepted or integrated in these countries, sometimes they do, and you can't guess that by their appearance or skin color. You would find a wide variety of opinions about France in the french national team I'm sure, but you will NEVER hear it in public media lol, they're not dumb, that could seriously hurt their career. I'm french, I know people of arabic descent that are really proud of being french and french culture, some that reject it and somewhat resent the fact that their grandparents came here. What's true is all of them had to deal with some level of racism in their lives here. Get controlled by police a lot more often, followed in supermarkets because suspected to be a thief, looked at with fear by old ladies that watch too much television etc. And some of them accept it as what it is, some of them decide that they don't feel home here. And I don't think anyone except them can speak on that.

Really weird question indeed.
