Disboard used to be a decent site. Used to. But then the owner of the site then axed his entire staff team because said team wanted to make improvements on the platform... Which happened last year. This leaves no one but the owner to remove botted or scammer servers, get new servers past review, among many other moderation tasks. Disboard DOESN'T have a functional staff team anymore. The owner's doing a lot of shit solo. PLEASE abandon the site and spread the word about better alternatives. If ANYONE wants a better alternative, the former staff went on and made a site called UnFocused.

I have an alt i use to report that kinda stuff. The servers have people 12 and under, people (most of them minors) posting selfies, "dating" (grooming) servers with 1000+ members, and ontop of all that theres large abouts of racism, queerphobia, misogyny, abelism, any discrimination you could think of. Some of the suff kids said there breaks my heart "please be nice to me" "i want someone who acts like a parent" "please dont send nudes" "i just want to play minecraft" "i want friends". I despise child predators. How could you look at a child and think its okay to "date" them? To hurt them? Please seek therapy if you think acting on your attraction is remotely okay. Its not. Children are the most innocent of our species, snd to corrupt that is the greatest perversion.

It's so shocking how many of those servers may be legit created by minors. Many of them could be adults seeking children for malicious purposes, just pretending to be a child, but I've seen over the past few years that some have been pushing for children to actively seek out adults for the same purposes. It's completely insane. Edit: I also have to say it ENRAGES me how so many social media websites now force you to go into the page/channel/server that you are trying to report for illegal and/or traumatizing content. I remember using disboard a few years ago to promote a sfw roleplaying server that was a fantasy world. They used to be SO strict back then! And the actual discord for disboard, they’d deal with bans so quickly and get rid of bad / reported servers like nobody’s business. genuinely thank you for bringing light to this. i noticed this shit around a week or two ago and was so fucking shocked at the sheer amount of disgusting servers being advertised. i spent a whole hour reporting every one of these servers i found but there was so so much servers it seemed never ending. i found so many cool servers on disboard and met some awesome friends through it so it's disheartening to see this vile shit on it, it should not be like this. i still don't get why certain tags can't be autobanned ? but i do realize that even if gross tags got banned freaks will just make up new terms to bypass it... horrible situation all around.

Fair.. I agree with you there. Unfortunately, Disboard AND discord do allow 18+ servers, so I can see how it can be unfair if all all listings were removed for it, however, they need to have a separate site or have it ID gated to even view/post the listings. That way, if anyone does post illegal shit - they can get themselves in legal trouble, and no one innocent would have to view those things. (Bless my poor eyes )

They didn't even do the BARE MINIMUM of banning tags. AAP is an easy ban, what else does that stand for that would be for a Discord server. MAP would be a little harder, just manually look through those and then ban the tag. They were going to review EVERY server, just do it for the MAP tag.

Instead of banning tags how about they fix the root issue. Run the server postings through AI (a commenter said chatgpt accurately identified inappropriate/illegal listings accurately). First these suspicious tags, and then the rest of the postings. Or just start from a clean slate with proper measures

Some weird shit happened with sailor moon servers on disboard. There was one that claimed it was better than all the rest, and would actively flood other sailor moon servers listed on this site with messed up trolling(gore, racism, the works) to try to get the servers banned. Full blown hate campaigns and raids with alt accounts because they wanted to be the only sailor moon server listed. It was called the dank kingdom at the time, and the server owner named themselves jadeite. This user was unhinged and claimed to have enough computer power to take down all of discord at a whim, along with government infrastructures because that is a sane and normal thing to say. It was surreal, and nearly every sailor moon server had to deal with the discord staff at some point. Naturally, the discord admin never took these harassment campaigns seriously and last I checked, the raiding on other sailor moon themed servers was still happening as far as 2022. With disboard being worse now, I can’t image how much worse the situation got.

From what I understand Disboard being unable to take reports on content inside servers is due to the fact that the *actual* Discord trust and safety team doesn’t want a third party snooping around and trying to be the server checking people, this is just what I’ve heard from other people, they’d be walking on Discord’s territory and they wouldn’t like that, regardless of what you think about how good Discord is at that job….that’s the reason.

I think it also has to do with validating the report. You can join the server on your account, validate the bad messages, but at the same time put your account at risk for being banned. If you rely on screenshots, people can fake those. I can see a reality where they use userapp commands in the Disboard bot to report messages to Disboard. But it's better to just focus on making the website clean first.

Simply checking if there is a nsfw channel in a server listed anywhere with the word "teen" is a red flag that should immediately put the server up to review, reports require people who arent there for the content advertised to join and risk their accounts when the bot could leverage its access to make the reports automatically. I find it weird that none of that access is being used. I will also say that it would be interesting if Disboard were to stop removing servers that advertise illegal content, instead blacklisting them from being viewed by anyone but the server owner, a way to mitigate the chances of the owner just creating a new listing by making it look like they were never moderated in the first place. Obviously if there is illegal content in the listing itself such as an image, there would be a ban required but it would certainly slow down the return of the servers following a "ban."

i ran a test with chatgpt where i sent it a photo of the description and tags of the server and asked it to explain why it is inappropriate. It explained it in full detail. I dont know what the disboard admins are smoking but it must be fent because their lack of braincells is crazy. AI can EASILY identify the problem in the underage dating servers which could be paired with a warning/ban system.

Better way to moderate disboard: A "state" feature with five states: - Safe ( If a server gets manually checked and is not NSFW ) - Safe/NSFW ( if a server gets manually checked and has NSFW it must prevent access of NSFW material to non-minors or somewhat check who got access, hidden by default) - Unchecked ( server added, not using any "strange" hashtags and description fine hidden by default, but "show unchecked" should be easy to access on the UI ) - Unchecked/NSFW ( server added, using NSFW hashtags, hidden by default ) - In Review (server hidden by default, any server that was reported is in this category. One report should be enough for an Unchecked server to be here ) This will reduce the amount of server to check, provide a way to hide certain servers (e.g., show only server they reviewed) and reduce the availability of certain servers.

hiding a server from a single report would be really broken. Your competitors can just send a report once in a while to effectively hide your legitimate server from the website. And if a server is only hidden once, the feature becomes entirely useless because the pedophiles can create an innocent discord server, intentionally report it, wait until it passes review and only then add the bad stuff

Okay, so, one tiny note about the "17+" bit - I know it's still 1,000,000% against discord TOS; but it might not be illegal where the sever owners are from. Age of consent *does* vary depending on locality. It's just 16 in Japan. So, while definitely illegal here in the US and Canada, I can at least see a world in which a sever admin from another country doesn't check the discord TOS, and just gates by what *they* in *their* country consider adult or minor.

i'm pretty sure age of consent laws don't affect production of p*rnography involving minors though. i could be wrong, but that's the rule generally i think. i'm from the UK where the age of consent is 16, however even if you're 16, producing nudes counts as CP. just using some basic reasoning, i'm guessing it's because digital content is usually distributed to the wider web, where the age of consent may be higher and make it illegal in said country, so it gets a lot harder legality wise. could be wrong though ^^

I've had a Discord account since 2016. Disboard has ALWAYS been like this. It didn't suddenly become this way, it's just a lot more brazen ever since Discord added their Discovery tab. Honestly just some people that spend an hour a day looking for this garbage would fix it eventually I'd believe. Or at least deliver a heavy blow, enough to warrant actual respect for their efforts. It's crazy to me how you and any other average joe can just search these very conspicuous tags and find vile servers through it, yet the people that actually run the site, or Discord themselves can't do the same? Another possibility is to just blacklist these tags, it'd be a shame for that one minecraft map server but that's really worth it, of course they'd create new tags but they wouldn't be as obvious, also making them harder to find in the process
