I wouldn’t say the helmet is only Slavic inspired. Considering what they do, I’d say the German pickelhaube also played an influence since Germans introduced gas warfare into the industrial age.

@ that is understandable. WW1 was a hyper focus of mine at one point and for those who aren’t as into that side of history it probably wouldn’t be the first thing they think of. I mean the pickelhaube design itself heavily borrows from Slavic design and similar helmets featured quite heavily in Russian militaries. So it’s not like you’re wrong. I just feel like the German pickelhaube being the main influence fits thematically due to the aforementioned and the world wars in general often serving as inspiration for 40K designs.

Funny thing about Mortarion and Guilliman. When they fought, Morty 'killed' Guilliman with another poison. But then the Emperor, THE Emperor, possessed Guillimans body. Morty was actually afraid for once, and the Emperor banished him to the Warp. However before Morty was banished you see the Warp gate showing an image of a derelict house and from the entrance you hear a disgruntled sound. Nurgle for once was displeased, I can only imagine the shit Morty had waiting for him when he was banished. Then the Emperor got rid of the poison and Guilliman was revived again

And the funny thing about pre heresy colour scheme. Official painting guide from citadel suggests using pale flesh and skin tones for cream parts of the armour. Just find it fun for sone reason considering in 40k their armour is their skin and flesh in many cases

21:04 the reason that Mortarion hates the Emperor so much for this action is that Mortarion had been devoting his entire life so far to the death of his father, leaving him as the last Overlord to kill. Then the Emperor shows up, goads him into attacking with inadequate equipment which leads to the deaths of the original Deathguard and then kills his father, denying him his life's goal. Anyone would hold resentment for that. I mention the original human Deathguard as it was for them that he renamed the legion.

You've covered three legions of the main Chaos pantheon so far, but I'm still curious about 16th Legion, the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus/Black Legion. The problem with them is that they have virtually no consistent lineage. They're three different iterations of the same Legion's soul in their design and partly in lore.

I really like the Luna Wolves with all their roman influences, the Sons of Horus feel like a needless change that makes them less interesting but the mallet-like spiked studs looks pretty cool. The Black Legion is just boring, both visually and as villains.

In classic lore, the Warp actually fuses the armour of the marines to their flesh, so they aren't just wearing armour, the armour actually _is part of_ their bodies now. These days that's moreso reflected in the Possessed and the Obliterators, but it's supposed to be other Chaos Marines as well.

I semi-recently finished a death guard army project. While the sculpts are really cool the amount of varied textures and colours made me begging for the end by the 20th plague marine lol. Luckily the nature of the DG means you can dirty em up and don’t need to be perfect and neat painting it all.

For my Dornian Heresy Nurgle Blood Angels, I'm definitely wanting to lean into the design and aesthetic elements of both the Crimson Court from Darkest Dungeon and the Black Grail from Trench Crusade I'm wanting have my Blood Angels Plague Marine units to have a mix of baroque designs of their armor to contrast with the decay and rot of Nurgle

Never thought I’d see the day when someone compared Guilliman to Mortarian when it comes to hypocrisy 💀 Besides that I really like the redesign, it feels like it could be a really cool demon prince or champion design. I am surprised Cal didn’t go more into how much Mortarian hates being beholden to Nurgle meanwhile other legionaries like Typhus did. I think it could’ve been very insightful for her understanding of the legion.

I found the comparison to the trench crusade Black Grail to be interesting. I almost don't want to compare them because I find their approach of the same theme, (Rot, Disease, spreading plague) to be opposite. The cartoonish nature of the modern death guard feels more nurglish. Nurgle spreads disease cause in his twisted mind he is spreading his love around. Beelzebub spreads the black grail because he hates humanity and God. Nurgle demons are happy go lucky and jovial, the black grail wants to spread rot that liquifies everyone into a zombie horde. I feel like adding trench crusade or darkest dungeon elements to the death guard takes away a bit from what makes the death guard and nurgle unique. Think of it like Marvel and DC. Both franchises do superheroes but DC has themes of "Gods acting like humans" while Marvel has "Humans acting like Gods" and their different approaches make them stand out from eachother

Yes I can totally see what you are saying, we were coming from the perspective that it didn't feel as grimdark whereas trench crusade really gives you the visceral reaction from looking at the designs and we thought that essence could come through more. Although yes, with Nurgle it's a positive view of the plague it is hard to try and find that balance of showing off that jovial aspect but also making it grimdark ~Sunny

It seems to me that you have slightly confused Russian boyar helmets (which are more bell-shaped, gradually narrowing and becoming pointed at the top) with Prussian Pickelhaube helmets from the First World War. Later, you remember the Trench Crusade with kind words. And it seems to me that this is roughly the reference that GW originally intended: lots of trench warfare, chemical weapons, gas attacks, gas masks, mustard gas - all that stuff.

I gotta say that that the comparisons to trench crusade and whenever someone says 40k isn't grimdark. It's mind boggling to me and evidence that people get desensitized to the universe they're familiar with. For the detractors who say 40k has lost its grimdark...look up art of squats. Not votann. Squats. Old art of them. The whole 40k universe is so over the top that it's cartoonishly horrible. It always has been. That said it's still Hella grimdark bc would YOU wanna go through anything that nurgle. Or all of chaos or the Imperium has going on? No you wouldn't bc you're a sane person lol

Randomly spotted this video, first one of this channel I watched, and I'll stick around for at least two next legion videos, as Thousand Sons and Word Bearers are my second and top-favourite respectively. Very nice one, though, the sir (sorry don't know thoust name), seems to be bit bitter at times? Then again, knowing the lore I watched it entirely for artist's persepctive, which creates some bias.

Design vs Lore is seriously lacking the story of Typhon. Long comment warning. Typhon was the bff with Morty since day 1. Typhon was the one who asked Morty for help, giving him a choice to be good for the first time in his life, as his adoptive father overlord was a dick. Since then, they fought against overlords together. Typhon is a half breed between these overlords and a human woman and so he was hated by everyone just as Morty. And only with their joint effort they managed to convince the people to trust them and lead them in war. They both hated overlord magic and Morty was really really against it when Typhon suggested to use one overlord's power to defeat the others. Morty then also heard Nurgle's voice whispering to him about some bs, when Emperor killed his dad, which was the actual trigger of hate starting. And even then big E really respected Morty for his resilience. Typhon, however, never received special treatment when he became an astartes. He started out as a line trooper, unlike that one bissssch Luther or many other human friends that became the right hand instantly. Even after the betrayal at Istvaan Typhon was going on his separate way and discovered Nurgle followers, who claimed Typhon to be his envoy or some sort. And so. Blessed with Nurgle rot, Typhon tricked the legion and Morty into a long wapr jump to Terra, blaming all astropaths with betrayal of their trust, and then inflicting horrors beyond imagination to the legion. Morty even tried to kill Typho , but Nurgle said "nah, I lime this one" and then resurrected him as a demon prince Typhos. Morty then agreed to the deal to sell the Legion's souls to Nurgle to end their suffering, because he truly loved and respected everyone of them.

The Death Guard are honestly the most popular single god devoted legion, and I don't really quite rightly know why. Personally I just don't see the appeal in the grossness of Nurgle. I'm not squeamish, but I don't revel in disgust. Still the Death Guard get a lot of love from GW, of the big 4 monogod Legions, the Death Guard have the most unique units and were the stars of 8th edition. The ranges of the Thousand Sons and the World Eaters are tiny by comparison.

To me, the helmet in the seventh version of the pre-heresy armor reminds me of the shape of the helmet of the German troops during the First World War, which echoes the history of our world (the first mass use of chemical weapons in war) and the theme of the Death Guard as specialists in the use of such tactics and weapons.
