A nuance with the pre-heresy to post-heresy transition that's sort of lost and easy to forget is that the Post-Heresy designs are what we had decades in advance to the Pre-Heresy designs, which didn't even exist in the lore until recently with the Horus Heresy novels. So the all red and brass pedal-to-the-metal-Khorne themed "Generic Khornate Berserker" we see in the Post-Heresy design with the "primaris problem" was the only version of the World Eaters we had for decades, so naturally, it'll completely lack any of the pre-heresy characteristics of the legion because no such characteristics even existed--much less were identified with the World Eaters--at the time of the oldhammer designs. Additionally, yeah, Khorne was the only defining characteristic because they didn't have anything else before the Horus Heresy novels to distinguish them. A comment on the Chainhands artwork: It also portrays the corruptive influence of Chaos on the mind in a way. He's angry and in pain, yet he directs his anger not at the one who made him like that (Khorne), but rather, the person in front of him, hopelessly deranged by Khorne's influence. Up until this point in the series, we've only seen one Chaos legion that actually committed to any Chaos Gods, while the other two despised Chaos (and already had very distinctive oldhammer looks that defined their pre-heresy designs). Now as we move on to the second half of the legions, we're gonna see Chaos legions who define themselves much more by their respective Chaos alignments, and the feeling of them being generic is gonna get worse for the same reasons I described in the previous paragraph. A factoid about Cal's redesign with the blood covering the blue pauldrons: canonically, the World Eaters never actually repainted their armour, they just haven't washed it for 10,000 years... That red on their armour isn't paint.

I do agree with sunny It's a little disappointing that almost nothing is left of the original war hounds However I do think that it is pretty thematic considering that after the heresy there was nothing left of the original world eaters other than raging broken men. Which is why when it comes to my own world eaters for the table top I paint them in there Great crusade colors, but then coat them in blood, from a distance they just look like your average world eaters, but then on a closer look you can spot there origins, and how far they've fallen

That's what I really liked for a Tweak Kal(Cal?) threw in on Sunny's design version.. The Blue Pauldrons but splattered with blood. I have to admit that I dont really know what you do for 10.000 years in a chaos realm, but I dont think these men would have taken time to paint and change their armour into that 'bit silly' Khorne beserker style thing, way more likely they just kept what they had on and kept 'slaughtering'.. =) so yeah like your way of doing it =)

Have to agree with Sunny's post-heresy takes about keeping more of the original WE flavor (I swear this pun was 100% unintentional) in there. That last post-heresy marine's white helmet almost alludes to this kind of regret buried deep in their psyche that even though this is exactly what they chose this wasn't where they wanted to end up or what they were made to be. Pretty grimdark if you ask me!

So, when it comes to the color post-heresy, iirc, the original World Eaters never changed their color! They kept the White and Blue. However, whenever they made new World Eaters to add to their legion, the new recruits painted their armor red to match the old WE. The reason why is: the new recruits believed that the World Eater's color was Red, but it was actually just the blood that they never cleaned off and was always stained with. So eventually, most of the legion had red armor, but that was because enough of the old guard had died by that point. A little dumb when it comes to lore, but I do find is fascinating when it comes to your ideas on the color scheme, and how painting them as heresy but then drenching them in blood would actually still be 100% lore accurate lol

I know that bit of the lore but, the issue is uncleaned blood is actually brown and it would have flaked off a great deal with movement... There is a lot wrong with it not saying you are saying it's not silly it's just I am not sure that would have helped the conversation. My impression of that was less, they are stained in old blood but that they were always killing something. With the nails constantly driving then closer to insanity, they would turn on their own allies and got covered in a near constant cost of fresh gore

Chaos marines look far more boring and cartoony and I like about heresy era stuff is how it is often more militaristic and real but also more personalized for each legion. He removes the closh. W: Le Monde Everyone gasps in shock at the lumpy unappealing mush on the plate. Angron gulps and picks up a fork, hand shaking he digs in and takes a wobbling mass into his mouth. After several crunchy bites, he swallows. A:(smiling) this is fantastic, whats it called again? And then Lorgar saw the chance to save his brother by forcibly giving him to khorne. Was it the wrong move for Angron? Yes. But Lorgar wanted to be selfish, he wanted his own brother to continue living and so he forced his brother's hand, just so that he could always be alive. And yeah that hurts. But Lorgar was not always the conniving madman thar he is now, he wanted the truth... And the chaos gods gleefully lied to him, worse than the emperor ever could. Which honestly is a very tragic fate for him.

in my opinion the problem with world eaters design is that they were first THE Khorne Bestserkers, and then khorne berserkers starts to be a general chaos unit. So we have a situation when simple and readable design becomes plain and uninspired, because it starts to be general not unique.

I kinda disagree with Sunny about the issue with the post-heresy World Eaters designs, it makes sense that they would lose their sense of self and what they once were, given how they know nothing but complete unending rage, they have no time to care about their past, let alone think back upon it in any way. It's one of the few instances to me where less is more, the more modern designs on Chaos Marines have just been the same design just different colours, but with Khorne Marines, they have much more tell-tale signs of what they are other than looking exactly like an Emperor's Children or a Night Lord, just red and brass, they have their unique helmets, they have their chains wrapped around their forearms (Which does kinda call back to their past) and their chainaxes which are predominantly used by World Eaters. I can understand from an artist perspective how dull it can be to go from the personality of the Warhounds/PH World Eaters colours and design and then just remove all of that and it's just red and brass (For some reason people colour the Khornate World Eaters with gold even though it should be brass really) with some chaos-y spikes and symbols, but given their patron god, it details their lost sense of self, all of their mind has been lost to the nails and the rage they always feel. Regardless, I'm glad the two of you got to the World Eaters, I was looking forward to your coverage of my favourite Traitor legion, I'm also looking forward to your video on the Death Guard, Word Bearers (Only from a colours/design standpoint, screw you Erebus) and my second favourite Traitor Legion, the Alpha Legion. Edit: Also Cal, I beg you to show Sunny a picture of the very old Salamander's colour scheme from the early days of 40k when you get to them, might be a good precursor to the Alpha Legion's deceptions.

Really great redesign. I think Sunny was on to quite a lot this episode. Cal of course had to keep things on the rails. World eaters are one of the most tragic legions to me, as they could have been so much better. But unfortunately the emperor and his actions in abducting Angron and the nails had done to much damage, one of the legions that would have been better off if the emperor never found thst lost son.

@@WhatareyouPaintingnow that was one of the reasons but the blood angels and warhounds kinda did a switch were the revenant legion was about to be purged just like the II and XI because of how they just butchered worlds. Nassir Ammit the first flesh tearer picked that name as it was the first name he liked in the first book he ever read. He did not know how to read because he was a nuclear mutant that like the rest of the old blood angel legion was used to eating people as that was the only source of food. One of my favorite Siege of Terra books is echo's of eternity with the revenant legion's ritual of eating the dead and the last memory he takes from this dying soldier is her child begging her not to go fight. Shit was wild. The warhounds even after the nails and shit even as a traitor legion brotherhood is a core part of them. Kharn is broken just like his father but whenever a world eater shows up as a side character they're with you through the apocalypse and back.

The World Eaters, and Khorne more generally, catch a lot of flak for generally being "one note", where they have one very defined niche and very little outside it. However, to me there's something really badass, and strangely refreshing about their simplicity. If you see the World Eaters, you immediately know they're there for one thing and one thing only: slaughter. A Khorne berserker lives to leave nothing but broken bodies and red stains behind him, and that's that. There is no trick, there are no negotiations, there is no escape. They're there to kill you, and that's it. They're an expression of just sheer rage and catharsis. There's something badass about that. It's kinda refreshing to a player like me, who's always trying to come up with the machinations and carefully calculated plans of the likes of my Thousand Sons or my Inquisition, or my AdMech, or with Eldar. With the World Eaters there's just none of that, it's pure and simple violence and might. The World Eaters let me just throw my hands up in the air and say "fuck it, I'm just gonna smash their face with a chainaxe"

Sunny's misunderstanding about the World Eaters becoming "standard Khornates" is understandable. But the problem here is that these are standard Khornates - these are World Eaters. Well, that is, they became the template by which all Khornates were then molded. And yes: she is wrong about them not having any unique features: these (impractical and inconvenient) horns on the helmets of the Khornates were inherited from the World Eaters, for whom this was something like veteran regalia. The Chaosites just made them a little more richly decorated.

These (absolutely impractical and getting in the way during battle) decorative horns on the helmets seemed to me to be a reference to the helmets of the evil crusaders from Sergei Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky" of 1938. A kind of nod to the classic film, which is supposed to reflect the image of an irrationally evil and cruel warrior.

My personal two favorite legions are the Night Lords and World Eaters probably bc of the whole “their primarch kinda got fucked in one way or another” thing. The ability to have some sympathy for them to me makes them more likable. I know you touched on it but how Angron was discovered/abducted played a HUGE role in who he is and how he views the emperor/imperium. To me it was kinda glossed over in this. Like imagine all of angrons brothers in arms who suffered together, fought their way out of a regime that oppressed and used them as sport and were meant to die together and they were all lead by Angron. Then the emperor shows up offers Angron a spot and he declines saying he wants to die with his men. Instead of either helping his gene son, a primarch, fight off his oppressors or at the very least saving his men (who could have easily been integrated into the chapter as new space marines) he basically abducted Angron and had him watch as his people were essentially genocided. Like imagine the effect that had on Angron and how he’d view the emperor and imperium and through that how he views his legion as an extension of that. Also, I think the barbed wire/thorns of vine motif looks cool don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think it vibes with world eaters. I feel bad bc I’m just criticizing it without really knowing why so I hope someone adds to this with a better explanation. The only thing I could come up with was it looks too flowy, too ornate in a wealthy way like something you’d see on a frame of a famous painting not on a space marine that kills either methodically or ravenously. The curves on the vines are just too elegant to reflect something the legion would align with. Like I said I feels bad just criticizing without a good alternative but I think it’s the way it flows nicely up and down maybe instead tryna wrapping around more evocative of constriction or something?

In some cultures white is the color of death, so it's pretty warlike from that perspective. The Romans were into red because it was cheap, relatively, and that is why many moderns associate it with red... along with the red coats. But Napoleon's guys favored blue and white and looked damned warlike coming across the field in columns... so it's a matter of perspective.

I have to admit, given the preposterous behavior of the world eaters post heresy, it's hard to see how they couldn't have a dark red scheme, since it's predicated on the supposition that they lack the executive functioning skills necessary to maintain non gore spattered armor, so red is just the easiest way to cope with it. I wish there had been some commentary on the abstruse head gear, which is even more preposterous than what the tsons rock. Any military organization that went all in on something like the nails would be a good candidate for extinction over 10000 years. OTOH, the nails do seem to affect everyone differently - some guys find it more like a migraine - like Kosolax - and others are just on a one way road to complete feral degeneracy from the jump. OTOH, the inherent absurdity of the world eaters is part of their appeal, personally.

"Umm actuallyyy" warning There are several things missing about world eaters in this episode that clarifies why khorn worshippers =/= world eaters Kharn the betrayer is known as "the betrayer" because he betrayed the legion in a critical moment, when they needed lesdership after the heresy. It was when the 3d legion, the emperor's children attacked a planet, where the world eaters were hiding after the heresy concluded, somewhere in the eye of terror. The planet was so cold, even space marines couldn't fight on its surface. Kharn was like "pussies." And took a flamer to burn the housing of his own warriors because they refused to attack in this deadly cold. Since then, they lost all cohesion and splintered never to be united again for 10 thousand years. The splintered groups then lost all identity as legionaries and became warbands, each getting into different groups and doing their own thing. And because being a khornite worshipper doesn't predispose you to being a good manager, all of them suffered lots of attrition they couldn't replace with new marines. So, instead of making new ones, they began to accept the khornite worshippers of other legions and integrating traitors of all sorts into the warbands of khorn. Staying united when everyone has different colored armor is hard. So they painted it red. Most of them, at least. There are still distinctly warhound groups out there, who follow old legion's traditions. But they are few.

My question would be why did they worship khorne in the first place? because if they were accepting khorne worshippers from other legions to regain their numbers, I can understand that they need to look cohesive but it would still also makes sense to consider them as now part of the world eaters-Khorne army and not make them all just red for Red's sake 🤔 ~Sunny

@@WhatareyouPaintingnow People worship khorne for different reasons. I listened to an audiobook about a traitor blood angel, who joined a khornite warband. His particular reason was the bloodrage that he believed as bringing out his true form. So he left his chapter, and joined khornites, wishing they would implant him with the butcher's nails to get that pure rage in its peak form. In that very same book, there are also traitors from space wolves. They were incredibly impatient and always just wanted to get stuck in the fighting first to get the glory of battle above all else. They were also part of this warband until they disobeyed orders to hold the line of supply defences. In a horus heresy book where fulgrim and perturabo venture into the eye of terror in search for angel exterminatus, a superweapon presumably made by eldar, there are some iron warriors who fall to khorn. There is an example of a white scar champion who was kidnapped by a khornite warband. He was forced to fight them in the arenas and tortured. He got mad. Killed the guy in charge in a duel. And proclaimed himself a warrior of khorne, because none of those fools around him knew how to fight best. In the nightlords series, there is a nightlord Xarl, or what's his name, who is a berserker in the making. He is going mad over the books and it shows, but he is fighting it and doesn't fall until his end. He gets these moments of blankness, where he gets really single minded and the squad leader literally has to punch some sence into him. He forgets what he does during that time of blankness, but he still holds his brothers from the same squad dearly close to him and tries to be selective with whom gets on the sharp side of his blades. The dude in focus was just too happy to fight and let go. Iron warriors are grim, sturdy, and very strict. This one felt the joy of battle and the rash of adrenaline kicking in, blood pumping in his veins and from the enemy dead... so he said the line. Finale of the horus heresy, the end and the death, shows what Horus has prepared for Dorn. A gift of letting go, mindless slaughter for it's own sake. And so, Dorn gets trapped for hundreds of years in a desert with nowhere to go, but the dunes, and the corpses of his warriors, and the wall that he can't cross. His mind and memory erodes, slowly making him give in, to stop planning the escape, to accept the only truth that matters now, that he wants to get through this wall and fight. He doesn't remember what for or whom to fight, but there that there was a war. And it doesn't matter now, because so much time has passed and our 'Defiant and unyielding Rogul Dorn' is long forgotten' All Khorne wants him to admit is to say who is the blood for.

Sooner or later the person in question stops caring about literally everything else. Aiming? Reloading? Getting out of your armor? Maintaining your armor and weapons? Caring to dodge enemy fire? Sleep? Speech? Restraint to hold off of attacking your own brothers? Spilling your own blood if there is no one else? Absolutely nothing matters to khorn worshippers but the blood to spill and skulls to bring to the skull throne And so, it's their armor reflects how one coat of dried blood is getting so thick there is nothing that can be seen underneath
