Hi Andrew. As an owner how well do these hold a charge. Eg airport parking for 2 -3 weeks Im thinking of an EV and at this price point its viable for me. Whats the battery life expectancy and do you know the replacement cost. Lastly have you had any design niggles or problems. Many thanks Lee

@@Lee-70ish Hi, I can only give you my own personal experience. I went on a 27 day motorcycle holiday in July and left the car parked up while I was away the whole time. When I left it, it was charged to 98% and when I got home it was still at 98% and there were no issues with it, all still worked fine. As for battery life I have no information on the subject but with a 7 year warranty I think it should be pretty good. As early adopters it’s always a bit of a gamble and everyone’s circumstances are different. I’ve no vested interest in the brand but would certainly recommend EVs in general, I chose the MG as made most sense to me in my financial position. ( a cheaper one I could afford) and I’ve had no regrets. There are lots of posher brands out there and very impressive they are too but beyond my pocket. Finally I’ve had no problem at with the car, yes certain things could be better but that would come with a cost

@@zioxei It looks nothing like a Touran. Arguably, it looks a little like the Passat Estate, which is no bad thing, if a little dated. Some people object to aethetics of the relatively small alloys and high profile tyres, which are unfashionable compared with the low profile tyres that are currently in vogue. Personally, I think they make for better ride comfort and save you wrecking the tyres and wheels every time you hit a pothole. Mind you, MG seem to have listened to the criticisms and the facelift model coming next year has more modern styling and lower profile tyres with bigger alloys.

MG bought by cheap fools. By buying a Chinese car, unlike any other purchase, you are directly supporting a Chinese Communist Party owned company and undermining western companies (including from democratic countries like japan and Korea). China are a communist/totalitarian regime, they want slowly dismember western economies. All car companies in China are directly or indirectly owned by the CCP. You are supporting CCP design, technology, and engineering. China are a self proclaimed enemy of western democracy and free people, fact. Buying Chinese cars will change the power dynamic and erode western freedoms. China cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is a threat to their regime. They need to extinguish freedom in as many places as possible. All empires/civilisations spread their model. By increasing the power of Chinese companies like MG, we are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched think again. If you think this process will be benign, you are wrong. China will slowly tighten their grip on democracy, it is already starting to happen, they already demand other nations to limit their freedom of speech. On the current course, in the not too distant future, your government will be indirectly controlled by China, your government will impose decisions handed down by China. You will not be able to protest or question these decisions. You, your children, and grandchildren will grow up without any freedom for the rest of your/their lives. As one example China forcibly sterilised and aborted their own women in the 80's, dragged them in to horrific surgeries, now the Uyghurs are being subjected to the same treatment.

Certainly a decent car but there are missing bits in this review: you mention the boot size is rather small compared with similar sized estates. Also, MG's folding seats don't give you flat boot as they don't fold completely, which for an estate car, a deal breaker. The car is also not NCAP tested (no reason to believe it would perform bad, but still). Personally, I don't understand why they copied Passat grill and front design almost 1:1.

I have one for the next few months on hire until my new car is built. Coming from a VW ID4 1st Edition, I think the interior is very basic with lots of hard plastics. However, apart form the noisy ride and flaky infotainment system it's got a lot going on for the price. It looks great, the seats are comfortable, the range is ok, about 200 miles and it has plenty of space. I wouldn't buy one with my own money, but I wouldn't buy an ID4 or the Skoda Enyaq that I've just ordered as a company car. For the price you can't go wrong, there's nothing else to buy at this price point that beats it.

Not specifically addressed at this reviewer, but the best way to conserve energy is through momentum. "One pedal driving" is not the way to increase range. Using unwanted momentum is. So the recoup settings should be used with that in mind, basically as you would use engine braking on an internal combustion engine but more aggressively.

Thank you for this well-rounded, honest review of the MG5, Doug. I couldn't help but chuckle to myself, though, at 3 minutes in when you're talking about the driver's seat height. Why...? Well, it's ironic, surely, that usually THE main reason given by the car buying public for being so utterly obsessed with purchasing inefficient, breeze-block-aerodynamic SUVs is... "I like a high seating position"...! So, for you and your colleagues to COMPLAIN about the high seating position in the MG5 is kinda contradictory, don't you think...? 😂
@raftonpounder6696

Even though you sit high off the road in an SUV does not mean you sit high up IN the car. There’s a vast difference between feeling as if you’re sitting on a car than in it. I drive a large SUV but can drop the seat well down. 😄 Just because you don’t require a large vehicle does not mean you should laugh at those with mobility problems or large families who need one.

Having sat in one and being 6'4" it's quite noticeable that with this coming from a modded ice chassis they have had to squeeze those batteries in somewhere without changing the looks of the car. To me, instead of getting rid of the central tunnel to make the floor flat, they have raised the floor to the height of the tunnel. Thus in the back your feet and knees are quite high compared to normal cars and in the front the driving height is higher. This is not noticeable on the zs ev.

The initial value would be lost a few years down the road. However, I'm sure that the MG will continue to improve and once they produce and sell fiesta sized ev cars, they may well be a good choice.

You might be surprised... Looking at equivalent PCP rates on Carwow, the entry-level 2 e-Niro with the Long Range battery pack is £339pm compared to the highest-level Exclusive MG5 Long Range at only £231pm. Don't get me wrong - the e-Niro is undoubtedly a fabulous, super-efficient EV (at least, for an SUV...) but for 99% of the time I'd be certain the MG5 would do pretty much everything family-wise that the e-Niro would do day-to-day... but, £100 per month saving is HUGE...
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is the eNiro is quite an old model, built on an ICE platform and with Kia bringing out the much more advanced and much better specced EV6, they’re probably going to plummet in resale as they age. So I think I’d save up for the EV6 instead. They don’t sell the MG5 in Australia, so not an option.

The drivers seat lifts high so we see out of the window but the seat only goes back when the height is lowered. My partner (passenger) might need a cushion because those bucket seats are just not wide enough ... however, the ageing dog can fit on the back seats, not like the Fiat 500e - same price - where the dog can not get in the back never mind a human. Very very concerned that we might be making a mistake swopping. Nice car ... but can we run "both cars" on a tight budget.

I think what’s missing here is that “All those other rivals” are not an estate. And as an estate on paper it’s boot size is just too small, heck there is a lip and bump for seats a big no no for an estate and something they could of sorted with the variable floor. I think the rest of it is perfectly fine many estates look bland but they serve a purpose and this one seems to have forgotten what that purpose is.

Well I suppose that this is what I will be driving in about five years' time, simply because it is the only EV estate being built now. Unless the reviewers haven't found how to do it, the rear seats don't fold flat or the cushions come out easily, plus that loading lip, restricted load space...all the things that make the difference between a good estate and a bad one. Almost as if they were intending to build a hatchback and got the shape of the roof wrong.

When the best car is the second best: The top model has a roof rack to add drag. It also wieghs 15kg over the basic excite (long range). So, whenever you find yourself 1 mile short of the charge point, you'll curse your more expensive choice. Go buy leatherette seat covers for £40 if you really hate valour.

Just a shame it’s fugly with a screen/infotainment system from 2013. However, credit to MG for actually making an estate EV, I don’t want an (overpriced) SUV, I want a normal sized car albeit with a big boot

Sloooow & thus frustrating smart screen & "cheap" indicators need to go. This car could sell better but for that it would NEED one pedal driving ( once you have driven one pedal driving you do not want anything else) & a EURO NCAP safety / quality rating . The MG EV'S keep improving though. Let's hope that soon they will get it right

MG ZS electric gets 273-mile range, Marvel-R SUV will recharge faster than ZS and comes with vehicle-to-load tech. Updates for its ZS electric SUV with a new look and two larger battery choices for a range of up to 273 miles, allowing the top specification model to travel two thirds further per charge than the current version’s 163 miles. The updated ZS EV comes with a smooth new body-coloured nose in place of the mesh grille seen up until now. This will further differentiate the electric model from the combustion-engined versions.
