"Crank" is an over-the-top solid silly movie, but it ends with that awesome shot of him calling his girlfriend and leaving a long answering-machine message, saying good-bye in peace as he falls to his death. The sequel, with Chelios getting a replacement heart instead of just being left to die, makes no sense at ALL, but it has one of my favorite bits of all time: his girlfriend had no idea what happened to him. Shocked by this, Chelios objects that he left a message. It cuts to her answering machine recording NOT a quiet, at peace Chelios whispering his goodbye, but the roar of the wind across the speaker for a few seconds before the second beep. It totally undercuts that great moment...and OF COURSE there'd be all that wind that we never thought about.

Behind the scenes of Crank 2 is ITSELF a hilarious story! Watched a bunch of Behind the Scenes interviews about this - they finished the 1st one, it did awesome, so the studio execs - seeing dollar signs! - brought Neveldine and Taylor (the writer/director duo behind the 1st one) in and giddily told them, "Okay! We need a sequel!" Neveldine and Taylor looked at each other, confused, then back at the execs and shrugged, "He DIED...!" They were basically told that the sequel was GOING to happen either with them or without them, and offered them a huge check to do it. They thought, okay, well, we'll take your money... And then they sat around and - pretty much out of spite - came up with the most absolutely LUDICROUS thing they could possibly write. They had an absolute BLAST writing the dumbest stuff they could come up with, but somehow kept it as a coherent story. And when they were done, they looked at each other with huge smiles and said to each other, "There's NO way we can let anyone else direct this!" And here we are...

In spite of his *reputation* of being little more than a muscle-bound juggernaut, Schwarzenegger has appeared in more smart movies than many give him credit for. Last Action Hero is definitely one of the best among these, but so are Predator, Total Recall, The Running Man, and True Lies. Each of these movies starts revealing its depth the more you analyze it.

Also, let me take THIS opportunity to share an amusing anecdote. When I saw Last Action Hero in a theater, the projectionist either decided to have some fun, or (more likely) didn't know what was happening, because near the beginning of the movie when the movie the protagonist is watching goes out of focus and calls out to the projectionist in the movie, our real projectionist started fiddling with controls and ended up shifting the projector so that the movie was playing on a side wall for a couple of minutes before the lights came up, an apology was issued and the image was reset to its correct position and the film was rewound a few minutes. Life imitates art.

Last Action Hero is criminally underrated. I think part of it was definitely the marketing, because the studio seemed to *want* it to be an action movie. It's also got the problem of poking fun at a lot of what Schwarzenegger's fans love about those 80s movies. So I think it had some headwinds going in, just because of the kind of movie it was. The only scene I really didn't think fit in the movie was the scene where Sharon Stone and the T-1000 are walking out of the police station. That didn't make any sense. They're supposed to be in *Jack's* movie. What are characters from other movies doing there? They kind of lost the plot in that scene.

@@KaijuAKD Well, yes, but I would argue that in this universe the T-1000 doesn't exist, because at most, in the LAH universe, T2 is just a *movie*. :) And the Sharon Stone reference isn't actually a reference to Total Recall. Her walking out of a police station like that is actually a Basic Instinct reference. :)

"Starship Troopers" is an odd duck in that it is not an adaptation of Heinlein's work but Verhoeven's opinion of the book as fascist garbage posing as an adaptation. That's a rather weird way to treat what is considered one of his greatest works. It's like being in charge of adapting "Atlas Shrugged" but you think Ayn Rand is a nutbar and her ideas are crap and so you make what is billed as an adaptation but it's making her look ridiculous. It should be a given that if you're going to do an adaptation you should be an appreciator, not a detractor, of the source material. Actually, everything I just said is a good summation of the 1960's "Batman", as a mockery of comic books and their tropes rather than a loving appreciation of the character.

Even at the time some people appreciated Last Action Hero. But it was a whipping boy for people who don't get cinema as anything other than art-vs-schlock and who didn't want to admit how ridiculous Hollywood is. Last Action Hero is one of my favorite films. It's a serious masterpiece, and very quotable.

I saw "Starship troopers" during its original run in 1997, loved it - and then was surprised, not to say shocked, that everybody apparently didn't get the satire that to me should have glaringly obvious to anyone even remotely intelligent. Seriously, were/are people in general really that stupid? This was a work of the man behind "Robocop" and "Total recall", for crying out loud - you should have walked into the theater EXPECTING a satirical social commentary! I know I sure as hell did, and lo and behold: there it was.

I loved the nod to Zulu (1964) when the aliens all come over the ridge to attack. Great scene.

I watched Last Action Hero in theaters and thought it was blast. Could never figure out why people panned it so hard.

Thanks for putting not another teen movie on here. Way ahead of it's time while at the same time being a product of its time because that was back when spoof movies were in but this movie did it way better than all the other ones did

I remember that many movie critics, even Siskel and Ebert did not realize that Starship Troopers was a satire. Its entertainment value increases dramatically once you realize that.

I don't think Ebert would understand a satire movie if he was pissing on it... He thought Adam Sandler is good comedy. And I don't mean movies like Click or Meyrowitz stories but his schlock made to write-off taxes and have a paid vacation while goofing with friends.

@@KasumiRINA I followed Ebert for about 30 years and eventually got to the point where I could tell if I would like a particular movie from his review. Like all critics, he had a few weird choices, although I considered him one of the best. My main issue with him and most professional movie critics is that they have seen so many movies that they tend to devalue ones that are similar to those they have seen in the past (even if the new movie does a good job with the plot) and that they tend to overly appreciate things that are new to them, even if they seem strange to the rest of us.

I like the movies that you've talked about here. With the exception of Crank 2, which I have never seen, I grew up with all of the movies on your list, and never considered them dumb -- but rather, really good. So I don't understand the title of your video, since these movies were never dumb to me. Having said that, I want to add that your way to highlight what's interesting about these movies, is definitely welcome 🙂

Watching Robocop too young? Jeez, I was watching Commando at 3 years old. That, Starship Troopers, and Last Action Hero are some of my favorite movies. This list is actually full of great movies. Guess I have a problem lol.

Last Action Hero was great, once you realised the kid went into a movie and it was just as Hollywood as you can get, you could enjoy it. But that's the problem as you said, it was not marketed correctly, it was just another action movie where the good guy of the 90's couldn't put a finger wrong, almost like a spoof of True Lies, except it was done on purpose, adding in the second part where Arnie came out of the movie and that was great.

You missed Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story. I first watched it and thought its totally dumb but during the movie it gets more inteligent and in my opinion its the best Spoof Movie of all time which deserves more people to appreaciate it. The wrong Kid died
