Nier Replicant. 5 endings where each ending gets worse than the previous because it adds me information and context. Ending A you defeat the Shadow Lord aka your human soul, "save" your sister, and doom all of humanity to extinction. Ending B, everything from ending A, plus you find out all the enemies you killed were actually human souls who were essentially begging you to stop all along. Ending C and D everything from A and B but your closest friend and last remaining party member goes berserk and you have to kill them. Ending C sees them die, ending D sees you die so that they can live promoting you to erase your save data. You can't even rename a new game file the same name again. Ending E. You play as the party member you saved in ending D. They go to the server holding all human memories and destroy it bringing you back to life. The game ends. But remember you doomed everyone to die in ending A so they brought you back only to die later. You do get your old save for back though so silver lining I guess

I was leaning toward Drakengard personally, because IIRC, each of the 5 endings is more depressing than the last, and then you get Ending E which is just WEIRD... and then you find out that it causes the virus that turns Earth into the world you have in NieR.

It's the journey that occurs between ending B and endings C/D that really hits. And then Ending E is more bittersweet than outright a "bad".

I remember hearing something about the reason XCOM 2 started out with humanity having lost is because not enough people who played XCOM 1 got the "Good Ending" or something like that, and so the devs made the decision to start XCOM 2 with that in mind.

The Fallout 1 ending with the Overseer refusing to let you back in the vault is because he's scared that you'll challenge him for control of the vault and being the hero that went out into the wastes, got the vault a new water chip, and ended the threat of the Master and his Unity army of Supermutants, you would easily win if it were put to a vote. The game doesn't explicitly state this but I believe a later game does, or maybe a supplemental dev document that explained it, I don't recall where it's actually stated but that is the real reason why the Overseer won't let the player back into the Vault.

There's a good argument to be made that the two best endings are suicide, or let Johnny take over - In the first you go out on your own terms, and in the second V 'lives' on in cyberspace while Johnny is likely to live.

Final fantasy 7: Sephiroth's last scene isn't you killing him, it's Cloud fighting him out of his subconscious Sephiroth is still in the life stream. Meteor strikes the planet. And, while that final fight is you enabling Holy to protect the planet, Midgar gets destroyed and the entire planet is left without a viable source of energy. Sephiroth infected the life stream after you beat him, and it lead to the events of Advent Children.

I feel that the Banner Saga trilogy could be on this list. By the third game, if you don’t complete certain things fast enough and lose important battles, the world is ruined and all but two characters are alive. Even in the best ending, the majority of the world is still in ruins, with only a small portion of civilization remaining

Until we get more concrete info on mass effect 4, I'd consider all endings for 3 bad. Even with the extended cut, 2 of em have you die, 1 forces you to commit genocide on the ai allies you've made, including Joker's new girlfriend, and the last just has you walk away and let the reapers kill everything.

I don't know how this Tues your own Adventure thing works - but I'd love to see a video that shows the games that were so good, that people would instantly replay them after completion, even and especially I guess, before New Game+ was even really a thing! So the most replayable games! For me, it was Wing Commander Prophecy! I suppose it helped that I had the Microsoft Sidewinder force-feedback Joystick and it was one of the few space sims of the time that worked (rose-tinted glasses) with that hardware! Drakengard just loves to torment the player and the endings just keep that pain train rolling. "What if we made a fantasy game but every aspect of it flew right in the face of all premise of fantasy being about making the fictional world better?" Oh and to get the final ending on offer you have to beat a boss using game mechanics that are nowhere else in the game. It goes from a budget hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors type game with Panzer Dragoon-esque stages in between to a straight up rhythm game where even one mistake can get you a game over.

When I saw the title of this video the first game that came to mind was Shadow Hearts 2 where all the endings are bleak, one where your main character lives but doesn't seem to have much left of his mind and the other (I think the cannon ending) where he dies

Love Shadow Hearts! If my memory is correct, the "good" ending of SH2 is where the main character actually gets to go back in time to the start of Shadow Hearts 1 to the time he met the love of his life. He technically dies in the present but I think the implication is he can try to change the events of SH1 so she doesn't die.

It works on a meta level as well because getting the good ending in SH1 involves being super thorough about sidequests and doing some optional stuff in the right order before hitting a certain point in the end game. A player on their first time through is unlikely to get that ending unless they have a guide. Thus they, like Yuri, have go through the game's events again. The time loop is still canon though cause Karin is also sent back in time - further back than Yuri is and sans her memories. If that weren't to happen then the plot of SH1 wouldn't be possible (and the villain would win right away) so even if you get the good ending in SH1 Yuri still has to go through some version of the events in SH2 so she can be sent back. Oh and the two endings of Koudelka, prequel to Shadow Hearts, are often described as good and bad but are really variations on how you handle the curse that has befallen Nemeton Monastery. On the one hand you could be powerful enough to defeat the evil beast on your own. On the other hand, the canon hand according to SH1, one member of your party has to sacrifice their life to call in a divine favor after the final boss kicks your ass.

I thought the way X-Com 2 decided... the timeline where the player wins in X-Com 1 is non-canon... and they based this on the data-mining that showed most players never got past the base defense mission. So they just decided that the base-defense failing was the canon ending.

I consider Far Cry 3's "good" ending to at least be quasi-hopeful. Jason and his friends are traumatized by their experiences, I consider his ending soliloquy to be talking about severe PTSD, but most of them got out and there's some hope that they can move forward given a lot of time and a lot of therapy. Now, 4 and 5? Those are unmitigated bad endings, other than the "secret endings". It's very telling that the best outcome in those comes from explicitly not playing the game. 5 is infamous these days, but 4 seems like a deconstruction of the game's core premise, saying "what did you think would happen when you got into the middle of a civil war you knew nothing about? Just because the rebels were kinda nice to you and they're fighting a crazed dictator, that doesn't mean they're good people themselves by any stretch."

I really liked 4's endings for exactly that reason, it shot down the visiting westerner saving a a poor helpless foreign nation trope. If anything it felt realistic and kept with the theme from 3. 5 on the other hand nuked the fridge, the county, and the franchise.

I love games that do a *good* deconstruction of tropes/genres, though the only other one that I truly hold up as an example (since I know the game) is Spec OPs: The Line. Replace the protag of most Farcry games with a ptsd affected veteran that *reaaally* should not have been sent back out into combat, and make it 3x more traumatizing reveal (IMHO).

Another game where all the endings are bad ones is Sundered. After fighting through hell and beyond, you are rewarded with several endings based on how you played the game. (Spoilers below) When the "good" ending leaves you trapped in hell with no way of escape, you know you're in for a rough time. In the other endings, you either initiate the apocalypse on purpose or you escape and might do it accidentally.

Nier, both the original and the remake. Ultimately, humanity is well on it's way to extinction, but each new ending just adds more pain and guilt to your struggles. The new E Ending is probably the happiest when viewed in the short-sightedness that you know Kaine and new Nier get to live out their lives, but then you must always remember that humanity is doomed, it's kind of your fault, and Emil's troubles are only just beginning. Far Cry 5 as well. Honestly, the best ending is to just say "screw this, this is way beyond my power" and just walk away... which is basically the same as the best ending in Far Cry 4, which is to say "screw this, let's go shoot some guns with Uncle Min". If I had a nickel for every time Ubisoft released a game where the only winning move is not to play, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened almost back to back (if you don't include Primal).

Hell, you could include all of Far Cry from 3 and up. Its one of the reasons I stopped playing them and just started watching them because I got tired of shooting from bad or worse. My personal nomination: Infamous 2. You either kill all the current and potential Conduits to cure the plague and let the normal people survive. Or you kill all the innocent people and let the Conduits activate, survive and thrive. This included killing innocent people who didnt even know they were Conduits. Of course this is also before they retconned it in the sequel Second Son, where they reduced the radius of the Ray Spheres activation and instead just activated random Conduits even further out of its reach.

Drakengard. The good ending has your monster partner become subjected to an eternity of suffering. One of the bad endings has an army giant demon babies begin devouring the world and it's only stopped by a little kid agreeing to freeze himself in time for eternity in order to freeze the demon babies. Crono Cross: to get the good ending, you have to order a sequence of seven attacks (yours and the final boss’s) by color, with the only clue being that on this one battle, each color attack makes a tone, and the correct sequence is a note in a song in the game. Basics, not having perfect pitch, I had to look this up.

EVERY ending in the Corpse Party series, even the ones that lead to people surviving because there’s always going to be a parting shot of tragedy. Let’s review: Blood Covered/Repeated Fear: The Original Five survive, but everyone that died in Heavenly Host had their existences erased from everyone’s minds except for said survivors. And what’s worse, eventually they will forget due to the passage of time. Book of Shadows: Both protagonists survive their failed attempt at a ritual, but the sister of one of them dies in the process. Blood Drive: The curse of Heavenly Host is lifted, and those who died are finally remembered. But the main protagonist essentially sacrificed her own existence, and not even her friends remember her… except for one.

The original Strange Journey endings: 1) Law - there's peace, but humanity has been reduced to brainwashed husks with no individuality or personality and those that do break free are killed. 2) Neutral - Yeah, the threat is stopped but only temporarily because humanity sucks and won't change. 3) Chaos - Society devolves into endless warfare and ceaseless bloodshed.

Define bad because the Infamous franchise (specifically Infamous 2) has a good bad ending and a worst bad ending. GTA V also has three endings and the third one involves the death of 4 main antagonist and their allies.

I was actually more frustrated by the endings in Life is Strange 2. In the first one I saved Chloe and just figured the town got destroyed and most people survived (something I continue to tell myself today). But the endings in the second one!? Oh god I was FURIOUS. I felt like the main characters got the shaft no matter what.

What about SCP Containment Breach? The game has four ending, but only one of them can only really be classified as a “good” ending, and even that ending could still be iffy. One ending involves the containment site being destroyed by a nuclear warhead (with you still inside of it), another ending shows you getting gunned down by MTF personnel, and another shows you getting captured by the Foundation and thrown back into custody (only this time, your labeled as an anomaly due to the fact that you survived several deadly monster attacks). The only ending that even remotely comes close to being a good involves you being taken away by the rival group of internet The Chaos Insurgence Agency, a group who’s sole purpose is to destroy the Foundation and use anomalies for their own nefarious purposes, but depending on who you ask, their true intentions are either to free the world from the Foundation’s control, or that their actually an evil-collectivist religious cult that worships a Lovecraftian entity known simply as “The Engine”.

Silent Hill 2, and similarly Cry of Fear. SPOILERS Setting aside a couple of joke endings, Silent Hill 2 ends with you either saying good bye to your wife's ghost, drowning yourself, or moving on with someone who may end up dying anyway. And surprisingly the new game plus exclusive ending where you try to resurrect Mary may be the darkest since it represents James being unable to move on. Cause resurrecting a loved one always turns out so well, doesn't it, Wander? With Cry of Fear, however, there's not even a joke ending, it's just depressing, and ends with you killing at least one person, either by accident while trying to kill a hallucination or being unable to trust your doctor and/or unable to forgive your crush. Either you die angry or ashamed, or are put into a mental institution, unable to break free of the guilt. There are a couple extra modes with their own endings where supporting characters manage to help the main character, but that character cannot avoid tragedy on his own, so the official Cry of Fear endings may make you do the first part of that title.

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen While Kain can sacrifice himself, which restores the Pillars and makes it possible for new uncorrupted guardians to be chosen. As is revealed in later games, humans are unsuitable as guardians and with Kain, the last vampire, sacrificing himself they can no longer be turned into Vampires, so the Pillars will still fall eventually and Nosgoth will still die, just slower than with the evil choice.

Fallout 4's ending with siding with the institute would have been the best option if they allowed you to actually do administrative work and prevent them from abducting people and replacing them. Allow synths to leave if they want to. The problem with them escaping was often they got mind wiped which didn't always mean they would be a benefit to the commonwealth. They could become raiders and harm people. If they didn't have to have a mind wipe, they could live a peaceful life rather than live in fear and see mind wipes as the only way out.

I think you kind of missed the point of the ending for far cry 3, I believe it was a little more hopeful than depressing, at the end of the day they were all traumatized by the experience, one of them was a sex slave, Jason's brotha was tortured and who knows what other things happened to them that wasn't really looked in to by the story but after such an experience and after so much death and not even mentioning that Jason lost his other brother then of course we weren't going to see a "happy ending". I feel that what Jason says in the ending is more like having to move on even though he is going to have some severe ptsd, he says he knows he can't come back from killing so many people and that he is a monster but that deep down inside he is still in there so he needs to try, in other words the real him that will try to leave the death and violamce behind. Or at least that's what I believed when I finished the game
