I was surprised to not hear Blighttown listed here. It's miserable and depressing... but it's so so *important* to Dark Souls. You need to suffer through the slog that is Blighttown to truly appreciate both the horror of realizing it goes EVEN FURTHER DOWN after ringing the bell and that moment of hope and wonder when you finally reach Anor Londo.

I would argue Subnautica... as the near end of the game is an underwater cave - so under ground - that is surrounded in FIRE! With a big boss in the middle of it swimming around amidst other dangers, so you can get to the bottom temple. You navigate there either in a Prawn suit, or in the Cyclops
