When IV came out, it made sense that R2 didn't recognize ObiWan and vise versa. BUT, given their history in Episodes 1-3 and the Clone Wars, there is NO WAY that they would not have known each other. We know that R2's memory never got 'flushed'. Now, having said that, R2 would know who ObiWan was when Leia gave him the message, and that would explain his determination to get the message to him.
