Yeah. If you listen to the original broadcast, the announcers are all "Hey, it's every man for himself, Sid saw an opportunity and took it!" while in the re-airings, it's all "OMG! SID IS SUCH A SNEAK! LIKE A THIEF IN THE NIGHT, HE HAD TO ELIMINATE THE HULKSTER WITH HIS BACK TURNED!" That, plus this was the first serious backlash against Hogan, as OP originally stated. Fans were getting tired of his act, yeah, but this was the first time he got legit booed.

First Dan Severn is a great person. Met him at a HOF show a few years ago, such a nice, professional guy. What I love most about the Rumble story is when they said "we'll just make you lose" and Severn said "correction, you can ASK me to lose, but if I don't want to, do you really think anyone could stop me?" And he's right, if he wasn't working, they wouldn't beat him.

Rumor has it that the WWE wanted to push Mr. Perfect into main event status by having him win the rumble since he was perhaps the hottest heel in the company during this time, and his storyline was to try to challenge Hogan for the WWF championship, but Hogan with his backstage politics later backed out of that idea at the last minute and just have Hogan win.
