I finished high school in 1996 and the one thing that sticks to my mind about that year was Hulk Hogan turning heel at Bash At The Beach and the amount of trash that was being thrown at him.

1996 was a very underrated year. I definitely see it as a sort of transitional year between New Gen & Attitude. Whilst it was nowhere near the extremes of 1998, there was a clear shift from the occupation gimmicks etc. The debut of tormented Mankind, Pillman's got a gun angle, Goldust's more risqué angles & a (dead)man buried alive come to mind.

The issue regarding that last point though is that while WWE introduced those versions of Ramon and Diesel out of spite, Tony Khan truly believes his announcements are somehow game changing and you just have to look at Christian's arrival as the best example of when that trope got tired - and that was three years ago.

I’ve always said people sleep on late 1995. HBK’s collapse, Tweener Diesel, and the beginning of the boundary pushing with Goldust all started in late 95, there was some good stuff with Dean Douglas, Razor and the Kid, politics notwithstanding, the Bulldog heel turn was fun, and Bret especially was just on a tear in ring vs Bulldog, Diesel, PCO and others. Also loved the fan friendly President Gorilla Monsoon booking stuff like the Ladder Match, the Triple Header main event at IYH 3, and the Wild Card Match at Survivor Series. There are better periods, but from a creative standpoint I’d put late 95 up against some of the worst of the Ruthless Aggression and PG eras.

I simply can. The WM12 Iron Man Match between Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels was one of the best matches I’ve ever seen. I thought so in 1996 and I still think so today. Because I’m a longtime diehard wrestling fan. I love every style of wrestling. And I love every aspect of wrestling. And sure, there were long rest holds. And sure, they shouldn’t have gone 1 hour without a decision. There should’ve been at like 2-2 at the end and had the overtime. And sure, it didn’t do great, money wise. But it was still a classic. Wrestling fans love watching great Wrestlers having great wrestling matches. And sometimes, you don’t need to be waving a banner, or screaming at the top of your lungs, or jumping up and down to show appreciation for something good. Ask Japan. Sometimes you can just quietly sit there, soak up what you’re witnessing, take it all in, and just enjoy it. But yeah, some fans are into the showbiz side of it more and don’t have the attention spans for an hour long classic full of moves and holds from 2 of the GOATs. I feel sorry for them. But, I’d rather watch a match where 2 excellent Wrestlers display a whole array of moves and holds, than watch a jacked up chosen favourite, because of his muscles and big influential family in the business, just do the same 2 moves over and over again, all the way through every match, then interference for the win. Reigns knows about 10 moves max and there’s over 1000 moves and holds. And always does the same 2 on repeat. Now that’s boring. And WWE’s ratings and attendances declined to the lowest ever, on average, during Reigns’ years as headliner. Forcing WWE to sell off more and more shares, release more and more talent, hike up ticket prices, so events in more and more countries, take blood money from a country that has no human rights and equality to do events there, and take money from Peacock to let them control and censor the declining WWE Network, just so they can still report record profits and not have to worry about improving the quality of their programming. How many times have we had dead crowd in recent years because it’s full of clueless PG brats who don’t even know what good wrestling is? Who have to be taken by their parents who’ve never watched wrestling in their lives? How many times have we had the boring chant in recent years? I mean, I can’t stand these idiots that wanna sing along to a Wrestler’s entrance theme. An entrance theme should never be more over than the moves in a match. I’ll take 1996 over any recent year. I’ll take the Iron Man match over any Roman Reigns, or Brock Lesnar match. Fans were also walking out during Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar in a WM main event, a few years ago. Just like they’d walked out before Raw ended because the last segment was another awful Reigns promos. Of course, Reigns has his cult like brainwashed worshippers. Believing he’s the GOAT because WWE tell them he is. Because he’s their chosen favourite. And their egos wouldn’t let them pull the plug on his mega push. But longtime diehard wrestling fans know he’s the worst of all time.

The fake Razor and Diesel debuts were far from massively hyped. Jim Ross made a few claims on commentary for a few weeks. Then they pushed it for the last week or so. Mr. Perfect asked President Monsoon about it on Superstars: Best of 10 Years and Monsoon brushed it off. Same again on Action Zone; Gorilla was asked while getting into his car. They jumped Savio at Mind Games. That was it. Then Ross debuted Razor on Raw (and only Razor) after slagging off Vince for a bit. It was more about turning Jim heel. UK fans already knew the truth because Nitro aired before Raw on Fridays, and they had Nash and Hall in a limo on that show. I just don't think it was overhyped. The Ross heel turn (which I loved) was the TV payoff.

I applaud you for actually saying something about the tribalism of wrestling. However, people aren't going to care that you are technically right. All they want is people to agree with them so they can crap on a product they most likely don't even watch. For instance, I don't watch a whole bunch of WWE but the reason why has nothing to do with the talent or the fans. It has to do with preference. I have fallen out of love with the WWE style a long long time ago. I don't like it. Does that mean i wont watch it? No. heck i went back and watched Night Two of WrestleMania and had a blast. Because it was really good show. AEW meanwhile does what I like not in terms of storytelling or even promos but in the in ring action there is just something about how much brutal stuff they normally do on a daily basis that i like more. I will say I wish Tony, and the EVPs would drop the whole Punk nonsense, but two things can be true at the same time. I can like one show for one thing they do well and not like another. Each individual is different and has a preference. But again at the end of the day, its pro wrestling, its meant to be fun, and enjoyable to watch. Not something to be angry about and then go online and call people who like the thing you don't idiotic for liking it. I really wish social media just didn't exist because maybe wrestling wouldn't be as horrible to watch if the wrestling fan didn't think they know everything dude. If you made it this far thanks for reading my rant. TLDR Social media and wrestling doesn't mix, and i applaud WhatCulture for acknowledging how toxic tribalism is.

The Iron Man match from WMXII is good, but WWE massively overrate it. The Iron Man matches between Triple H and The Rock at Judgement Day 2000 and John Cena and Randy Orton at Bragging Rights 2009 are both better than the one between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. This doesn’t mean I think that either Shawn Michaels or Bret Hart are bad wrestlers; they’re two of the greatest to ever do it, but this match has nothing exciting about it until the last 5 minutes/overtime.

I more of a competitive match between Warrior and H would have been good. But at the time H wasn't anyone yet, he was still going by the rich snob thing and if it was The Game I'm sure it would have been different. But at the same time, who hits an opponent with their finisher the second the match starts. I mean if they were a jobber or they were doing a monster thing then yes. But otherwise, and specially against a legend you don't hit a finisher right of the bat. Those like Taker, Hogan, Kane, Bray Wyatt/The Fiend (RIP Windham) would have also jumped up too.
