Dan, Top commentary. I agreed 100% with your well-tempered coverage of this flick. I too was pleasantly surprised when I first saw it in a theater when it first came out. I also didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. Predator II was less appealing but not horribly so but yeah, it was a sequel and not as fun as the original. Of course, this is because the original was actually something fairly novel (enough) and new (enough) to place a different slant on the sic-fi/action field. Nice work, sir.

Dan, this was a terrific video. This is another one of those movies where a behind the scenes reveal like yours could go for over an hour if you let it. One thing though. You might be interested to know that the handheld mini-gun "Old Painless" was rented from the now defunct Stembridge Gun Rentals and was later used by Arnold himself in Terminator 2. It was an actual M134 minigun firing 7.62mm NATO ammo. It's normal firing rate of 6000 rounds per minute was slowed down to 1250 rpm because otherwise the frame rate of the filming just showed the barrels as being a stationary blur (also to allow Ventura to hold it while firing). It was strictly Hollywood though because even at 1250 rpm the ammo backpack would only hold even rounds for 4-6 seconds of fire. That and it required the power from several 12 volt car batteries to run. The power cable ran down the actor's pants leg to off screen. After Stembridge liquidated its inventory the whereabouts of Old Painless are unknown (at least to me).

This original Predator movie was the best. It's one of those movies I've watched countless times. It probably may have the most memorable one liners. It wasn't nearly as good, but, I still enjoyed watching Predator 2 by expanding the hunt to an urban jungle. And, dropping an Easter egg (and I suppose future teaser) with the xenomorph skull in the trophy wall of the predator ship at the end. I forget, was the flintlock pistol something that showed up in Prey, also? I know it was explained who it belonged to.

I recently moved and my dvds are a mess. Last month I came across the 2 disc special set that has a bunch of features. I'm so glad you showed the original Predator look. No one would've believed it was going to work and the movie would've flopped. My personal story: I, too, went to a theater to see it and it was miserable. I had an older couple behind me that his wife questioned EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING! And out loud. "Where are they going?" "What are the shooting at?" "What's that green stuff?" On and on. When theaters at that time had ushers, I stopped him and asked him to tell them to be quiet. They were...all of 2 minutes. It started again. The movie "looked" good, but I had to wait until HBO aired it to see it. Then I fully appreciated it and loved it. Just watched it again from that 2 dvd set and it still holds up great. Your info was right on the money and even had more to it than the set did. Thanks for this take and look at one of the many 1980s movies.

@@texan-american200 I watched PREY. I thought it was a technically well made movie. It certainly was better than all the other sequels and spin-offs. However, I think it contained enough cringe and questionable scenes that I am slow to recommend it and I do not consider it to be a rewatchable film (rewatchability is a major criteria for me). I thought Naru was a bit too much of a girl boss. She wasn't a full Mary Sue, but there were moments where this trope crept in. I also think the show wrote itself into a corner because of the famous pistol scene. How does that pistol get into the possession of the Predator clan that gives it to Harrigan? I'm sure there is a narrative way to make that happen, but I hazard to guess that it will come across as contrived and convoluted (very similar to how I felt about Alien: Romulus).
