The absolute Highlight of my career was working with Dennis Weaver, 6 nights a week, in a Theater Show in Ouray, Colorado, just 10 miles from Ridgway. He did a 10 minute bit as Chester teaching the audience how to play the guitar. He had done that bit in Gunsmoke, teaching Miss Kitty how to play it. I never grew tired of it. Our first day of rehearsal, he did a line and turned to me and said, "Did I do that alright?" I was stunned! Why would this veteran Actor ask me? That's how real he was. No ego whatsoever. I still miss him. His son, Rusty and I played in the Band "Free Range Cats" for about 3 years. Rusty is a consummate Musician/Songwriter/Producer, and a great guy as well. Some of my favorite memories.

My 1st actor crush was"Hoss" from Bonanza. I Never, ever trusted, n or was attracted to, the 'pretty boys'. Never cared for Michael Landon who became very religious, but seemed (to me) in a non-humble, arrogant way. Interesting that his daughter plays "Teeter", the pink hair, Very foul mouth girl (Only girl in bunk house, at first), In the series named "Yellowstone".

There is a reason why a show lasts 20 years. Because it was very good. I tell my children that. I tell them not to be so resistant to watching reruns of shows like this even though they were off the air before they were born. My oldest was born 4 years after Gunsmoke. These old shows were so much better than the "brain washing" shows that are on now. I call them that because they make young audiences think of what they should believe in which of course was the idea behind all programs over the years. But modern shows push young people to believe in things that are just part of the gradual erosion of values American's once had.

Bill Taylor Hi Mr Taylor! I couldn't agree with you more! Just recently began watching Gunsmoke ( I was born in 1966) and I simply adore it! I've actually been seeking out programs like this bc I've found I come away with a feeling of well being and happiness instead of the disgust I feel after watching current tv shows. Just this evening I was grilling my parents for details ("why does Chester limp?" & "was Festus a drunk or a deputy" etc) bc I've only been watching for a few weeks.OMG so refreshing to watch a show where everyone isn't having sex with everyone else!! I realize things are never going to be like when I was a kid😕 (i.e. RESPECT/DISCIPLINE/HONOR/& most important IMHO: FEAR/LOVE of the LORD😇) but if only there were still some programs like this to watch maybe...MAYBE🤔...some of these crazy kids could be saved! Certainly couldn't HURT, riiiiight?!?? Well sorry to go on, your comment really hit a nerve! THANXSOMUCH FOR LISTENING!! 😉🙏🏻😬

What a genuine in-depth biography of the cast of Gunsmoke. Excellent work. Gunsmoke is genuine Americana ingrained into the memories and lives of those who grew up in the Baby Boomer generation. The directors had an excellent discernment of picking the cast of Gunsmoke. Each of the actors/actresses "owned their characters" standing on their own in the series. They weren't "extras" or "side-kick" characters. Great human beings as well.

This is a wonderful video about my favorite ever TV show. When the early episodes aired, there was no gunfight in the street with Matt and the bad guy. The opening scene in the early episodes was a closeup of a right hand holding a Colt .45 type revolver, firing several times, producing lots of gun smoke. That led into Matt at Boot Hill and his words of wisdom. The gunfight opening scenes came later. I didn't see anyone eating at the Dodge House. The favorite place for the characters to eat was Delmonico's restaurant, which drew constant complaints from the characters about Delmonico's.

Thank you for a full history of all these wonderful actors. Gunsmoke's great appeal was the fact that it did not over glamourise gun fights and the characters seemed quite amazingly natural.

This video story of Gunsmoke was fantastic. It really made my day. I was born in 1957 and graduated High School in 1975, the year Gunsmoke had run its course. My dad was in love with all the cowboy shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza and this show is wrapped around my entire childhood. I still love spending a rainy afternoon watching Gunsmoke reruns. You did a great job narrating and telling the story. Thanks!

Exact same here. Born in `57 and graduated in `75 and grew up watching Gunsmoke, Rifleman and the others. I met Ken Curtis once when I was a kid and and showed up in his Fetus costume and was one of the nicest people I ever met. Truly made me a bigger fan than I already was.
@agwbcfjc25 жыл бұрын
Another fine production, Mr. Skinner. Thank you. And may I add, for those who may not know, Ken Curtis was one of the greatest actors America ever produced, in my opinion. See the character he played in the Searchers and compare it to the character of Festus Hagan--the difference is profound. His range as an actor was extraordinary. Curtis's invention of the character of Festus Hagan is more than an actor's art and craft. The invention is closer to a metaphysical channeling of one soul to another, or one soul to the amalgam of all those men's souls who settled the west. To me, Festus Hagan is the embodiment of a type, the sum total, in one man, of all the tough, hard-bitten men who tamed and settled the west. Festus Hagan, as portrayed by Ken Curtis, is almost scary in its true-to-life, three dimensionality. I'd give a lot of money, if I had it, to know the story of how Mr. Curtis conceived and developed the persona of Festus Hagan. If I had to guess, Mr. Curtis probably knew a guy in real life who served as the model for the character of Festus. And if so, that fellow was one bad ass hombre.

I was truly touched by this documentary, I grew up watching Gun smoke, my favorite TV show of my life, my next favorite "Have Gun Will Travel" was on right after and my dad let me stay up 1/2 hr past my bed time so I could see it also. Those were the care free days for me and I`m sure for millions of others around my age (72). These shows were part of what made life worthwhile, ( along with horseradish and hot sauce of course) !

John Wayne was the ultimate cowboy, as was James Arness, but in my opinion Ken Curtis ranks right there with them as Festus Haggin. His character was honest, true to the cause, a man of his word, and always had your back no matter what the odds. Thank you Mr Skinner for posting this video.

Gunsmoke is my favorite tv western of all time!The cast & the chemistry between them was awesome!...Especially between Doc & Festus..Festus & Quint..Chester & Doc.Lol..Being American Indian & Black,i felt like the writers of this show were subtly supportive of racial equality at a time when it wasn't popular.The main characters saw everyone as men & women.Doc Adams doctored on anyone,regardless of race.Matt was always quick to notice that every indian wasn't the culprit simply because a white man said so.There was an episode involving a crooked fight promoter & 2 fighters fought to a draw.The white fighter gave the black fighter half of the money that was given to him to take a dive!!...Absolutely unheard of during that setting in the 1800s!!..The cast,writers,ahhh deserve soooo much more recognition. #gunsmokefanforever
