'Whatever I Do' was S/A/W's first top 10 hit and in my opinion one of the best things they did. Hazell Dean with a wonderfully self-sufficient swept-back hairdo delivers a female-empowerment anthem that more than holds its own with ‘I Will Survive’.

I don't hate it but it's pretty standard 80's pop ( why it came up in my feed is a mystery). She was never that big in the UK back then. Don't recall anyone I knew being a fan. Whereas I will Survive is a timeless anthem.

The great thing about TOTP is that any top 40 song could be asked to perform on a Thursday Evening. We got to see and hear songs that we just never would listen to given a choice. This is how we heard more obscure music, and how a song that's 40 in the charts can get a bit of attention then make a push all the way to No. 1 Those days are well, well gone, sadly 😔😔.
