GTA IV had a grit to it that really only appeared in one other GTA game and only in limited quantities with GTA SA. The stories told in GTA IV were dark, realistic, and at times humorous. The characters felt real and reflective of the real life equivalent i.e. Jeff gave a great performance of a jealous possessive obsessive deranged sociopath. Most characters had realistic motivations and acted accordingly. Even when you get to kill Darko, the guy that betrayed Niko's squad back in the war you realize he had his own realistic motivations for his actions i.e. addiction and revenge for Goran killing his friends and neighbors. It essentially solidified that Niko was no different than Darko and they were both motivated by a revenge that ruined their peace of mind.

Gta v's only saving grace was online. And the constant free updates for it. The story was a 6 or 7 at best. Trevor was the best, Michael was a very fun and interesting character, and frank was boring and a dick. Only in it for himself, done nothing for the hood he was 'representing' only till the end of the game he gave a shit. Missions for the most part lazy and boring. About 10-14 missions in the game I actually liked.

In 2008 I really didn’t like gta4 compared to the others I grew up with. When 5 came out I thought it was great. Now in 2022 after playing the remaster ones and after beating gta5 about 3 times for each gen console I revisited part 4. Idk if it’s cuz I’m in my 30s now but I really love it. It has this weight and grittiness and attention to detail that I didn’t appreciate it in my teens. Im addicted in a way that I have never been before. I used to think Niko was boring. But he is a pretty complex dude.
