I like that they say “try,” and leave it to the listeners to decide if they succeeded. I’m no expert on the fine technical aspects of opera, but after a couple dozen listens I’m STILL getting full-body chills. This is gorgeous.

Nessun Dorma is always an emotional experience when it's well sung. I remember the legendary concert in Rome where this solo aria was sung by Carreras, Pavarotti and Domingo - we watched it on TV and got the recording. But i don't remember it having the same shattering emotional effect as this performance has had on so many people. You are not alone in your physical symptoms, Dave. Is it just because we already know and love these guys? I don't think so, because I know that if it hadn't been sung so well we would have just said Well tried, fellers. This is magical. The division between the two is interesting. The first part that Rob sings says that no-one will sleep, including the princess whose hand he is trying to win. Austin's first part declares that he will never give up the secret of his identity until he prints it on her lips in a kiss. Rob the says the kiss will dissolve the silence (the princess must guess his name by dawn or marry him - yeah, I know) but on the stage Austin's second part is sung by a female chorus offstage, saying that everyone must die. The Prince then gains courage and looks forward to the dawn, when he will win the princess (who by the way is a pretty nasty piece of work). So the whole piece moves forward to the light. What to say about their voices? Rob's heavier, almost baritone, voice blends perfectly with Austin's lyric tenor. But where has Rob been hiding this voice? Does this mean he's been singing half-voice all these years??
@johntucker42962 жыл бұрын

I'm not an Opera expert but have listened to Luciano Pavarotti since the late '70's. I was very impressed by this "try" by Austin and Rob. Austin had to persuade Rob to attempt this song and they were nervous about how their fan base would react. Judging from the number of hits, likes and comments, I'd say they hit a home run! Rob OWNS this version. His rich, round, full, lyric tenor has beautiful depth. Austin is OK but his voice seems a bit reedy next to Rob's fuller timbre which really shows in his high B and his lovely low notes. The 'show off' part is holding those last 2 notes that Pavarotti was famous for holding far longer than most opera tenors. That was not in the original, but it has become the hallmark of the aria and the orchestra often stops before the singer finishes holding that last note. Neither Rob nor Austin tried that, though I expect Rob had the power to do so, it does take time to get the breath control and lung capacity back for that kind of vocal display. Watch Rob's stance. It's the typical classical singer's stance with a hand on the diaphragm so they can feel his breath control at his core. I don't know if Tim Foust is classically trained, but if he is, he and Rob should do The Pearlfisher's Duet, one of the greatest duets in opera. It is sung by a baritone and a tenor and is just amazingly beautiful.

This performance by Rob & Austin was truly angelic. I love how you closed your eyes. I really feel that that's what is missing in reaction videos. I think that we are really influenced by what what we see & that it can skew our 1st impression of things. Especially music. I'm from the transistor radio generation. When we 1st heard a song we almost never saw the artist sing it for the 1st time. We usually didn't see them sing it until they showed up on American Bandstand or shows like The Ed Sullivan Show or when we got to see them play live. I think that music needs to be felt & you did that. I would like to see reactors listen 1st with their eyes closed so that they can shut out the visual influences & stimulations. Then rewatch it & see the artist perform the song. I think the reactions would be purer both times. You would have the version where the reactor "felt" the lyrics & music & then the visual reaction. I love watching you react to Home Free. They, among others, are just so damn talented. Keep up the good work. 😉👍🏼

This performance didn't surprise me in any way. I knew it was only a matter of time before one or both of them tackled an opera selection. After hearing the power and beauty of their voices in the context of Home Free, it's not a huge leap to imagine this performance. Rob studied classical music in college and Austin's musical theater background is a solid basis for opera. There is nothing vocally Home Free can't do. Sometimes collectively, sometimes individually. They are like a box of chocolates. The variety and strength of their musicality is mind blowing. Rob and Austin crushed this.
