Guide to what's in Japanese arcades: What's in game centres in Japan, where to find them in Tokyo and what you can win from UFO catchers/claw machines.

Going to arcades is always part of my trip to Tokyo. They're a fun place to hang out, and a unique modern Japanese experience. You can play video games, try and win anime figures or plushies from the crane games, find gachapon (capsule toy machines) and try purikura (kawaii photo booths).

My grandmother cleared out an entire machine once filling a couple trash bags full of plushies in an American claw machine... She has been passed away for some time now, and the secret of HOW exactly she did this lies with her. So for me... I run on luck.

"The Crane Couple" are a KZbinr duo that have gone to Japan a few times and play LOTS of claw machines. Definitely worth checking out their YT vids for some tips. It's mainly luck and hitting payout that wins you prizes though!

i remember when i won loads of angry bird plushies in the ufo catcher. instead of grabbing it, i aimed it so the arm would squash the angry bird and then the pressure made it boing over the edge. I wiped out the machine xD that was at the namco arcade in london (which is rubbish compared to the japanese arcades!). Its also worth just watching the pro's in the arcades, especially on those rhythm games. crazy skills!

Sadly catcher games are lining it up right not that hard... the hard part is getting the right RnG. The claw grip has random grip strengths per grab. So... sometimes it'll be strong enough to hold onto said items and other times not. That is how they used to be. I assume it's the same. Good luck!

I've heard that too! So the number of tries needed to win a prize will match it's value.

Yes, that's an advantage of gaming at home. Maybe it makes it more of a challenge in the arcade! :-)

Great video that explains everything you need to know for having fun at the arcades! The most UFO catchers are not designed for winning the prize within the first try. It's more like having a good time trying things out and eventually getting the prize after spending around 1000¥. The UFO catchers near the entrance of the arcades have smaller prizes but are way easier to win. They are there to get you in the arcades by giving you the feeling that you can win everything... Another chance to get prizes easier is if the staff realizes that you are there with the girlfriend you want to impress. Therefore ask the staff if they can be so kind to reset the prize for you. The staff opens the UFO machine and places the prize in an easier-to-get-spot. I've read about that years before my first trip to Japan and I was VERY suprised that in the most cases if you are nice and friendly they REALLY help you by putting the prize in a spot where you can easy push it to the win. Sometimes the staff stayed next to me and cheered to me when I won the prize... Awesome... I really REALLY love this country and the great people there!

That's so nice of them! Totally agree - the culture and how people treat each other is one of the best things about Japan. Once I saw the staff do something similar for a small child - we got them to swap some plushie hamsters around so we could win the colour we wanted (and for once actually won something!!)

You are right the people and the whole culture is so nice I often miss something like that in my country. People here even if they are fine in their life are very dissatisfied about everything. Yeah its such a great feeling when you finally get the prize in the color you want! Every year we look for the plush alpacas but somehow they have become very rare lately - thats so sad!
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think I see alpacas at UK Japanese events more than in Japan! There are 3 Amuse arcades in Tokyo (Amuse is the company that makes them) which have more cute plush - I can't remember how I found them (the site was in Japanese) but I think one of them was in Kabukicho.
@mathesb
@mathesb 6 жыл бұрын
You are right I can buy them from many websites but this is not even close to the feeling of "adopting" the alpacas from their home country XD Even the japanese speaking guid living in Akihabara last year could not help. There are Amuse-arcades!? I definitly have to find them so I will search around in Kabukicho! Thanks for the hint!

I know how to win!!! Most machines have something called payout- which means that you have to keep playing a number of times until you reach the machine’s internal counter. Once you have reached the payout threshold, the grip on the claw becomes very strong and you can grab whatever you want!
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 жыл бұрын
Ah so you have to keep going and hope you don't mess up on the payout go! (I probably would!!!) (≧◡≦)

So the game that looks like a washing machine is "MaiMai" and it's my favorite rhythm game. It is a lot of fun! Also when it comes to the purikura for a group of guys you can usually go to like club sega or taito and there shouldn't be a problem as long as there no sign that says otherwise also you can ask if it's ok for a group of all men to go in, they'll agree/disagree depending on the situation and how many women are on the floor doing stuff. But the places that enforce the restricted/no men end up being the places that are strictly purikura. We went to one in Harajuku that was so popular a few members of an idol group were doing purikura, and the only men allowed were camera crew.
@cakeswithfaces
@cakeswithfaces 6 жыл бұрын
Just looked up MaiMai and yes that's the exact one I was thinking of! It does look like a washing machine! (≧◡≦) Yes, I think in most purikura places you could go in as a agourp of men and no one would notice or stop you. Everyone should enjoy purikura, it's so much fun! :-)

I went there in May 2018 just before the earthquake. Hate Dotonbori, too crowded. Planned to go to Umeda Joypolis but it was no longer operating there, two weeks prior to my trip. Rejected from entering Legoland because we were just couple without kids. DAMN.

I'm actually quite bothered by what passes for arcades these days now that redemption machines have taken over where real videogaming is largely non-existent. We refer to it as a cancer that ate our industry from the inside out, but what's even more disturbing is the fact that your generation goes for it as it's the only thing you've ever been exposed to. It's sad, very sad. We would rather be playing Gunslinger Stratos, Wonderland Wars or that Wizard's Dead game that came out some time ago. You can let the kids have all the silly carnival stuff for all I care as we've got better taste.
