I bought the NRS Socks based on your advice from one of your earlier videos. I wear them as socks when I know I'm crossing streams or rivers. If I have a choice between going across slippery rocks, slippery wooden bridges or logs I don't choose any of them. I prefer to walk straight across the water using my poles and NRS socks. Its better to get wet than it is to break a leg all alone in the mountains or forest. With the NRS socks, my boots get wet, but my feet stay dry. The socks do smell after a day of hiking though. Great video.

I also bought the Maxpedition Micro Pouch after seeing Peter's video. I've already made use of it on a job! I decided to throw in some band-aids and sure enough, I pinched my finger so badly on a door while on a real estate shoot. It started bleeding and instead of letting it bleed all over the place (or constantly sucking on it like an idiot) in front of the client, I whipped out one of my band-aids from the pouch. Thanks, Peter! :) It's the little things.

Nice video Nick! I definitely share you sentiments about grad filters. The only time I use them is for timelapses (if they're needed) since you can't really fix that it post as easily, and I hate doing HDR timelapses. The weight and space savings for not using big square filters is also a big plus for me, and I'd much rather bracket and blend in post without the degradation from extra filters.

Did you know: silica packets don't have an infinite capacity to absorb moisture but drying them out is not difficult. You can put them in the microwave! It takes about 30-60 seconds to heat the trapped moisture and release it. Then you will want to immediately place them into a sealed bag to keep them from absorbing moisture until you need them.

Any reason(s) for switching from the Acratech ball head to RRS? Asking b/c I’ve been really impressed with the Acratech leveling base, and have been considering picking up one of their ball heads as well.
@NickPage5 жыл бұрын
I had a couple bad drops... one killed a camera (dropped in a river) The locking lever on the Acratech began to not lock anymore, which lead to me taking off walking with the camera still on the tripod... then falling off. The lever system is great when it works, but not so great when it doesn' lock anymore. I also didn't love how much force it took to lock it down tight. I liked the weight and look.. just not the locking down power, or the lever lock system durability

Thoroughly enjoyed your video, especially those gloves that expose the fingers! I need to put those on my birthday list. It's interesting that you came to the same conclusions as I did and probably others regarding gear, I own a Shimoda bag now and moved from Canon to Sony, in fact I have virtually the same lens selections as well. For a bit I was hanging onto my Canon and carrying both sets but having 2 sets of batteries, chargers, remotes drove me nuts so I started selling my Canon stuff, not done yet but half is sold. The only thing I hung onto was my Canon 70-200 2.8IS since I went for the Sony 100-400. I have an adapter and it works but one VERY odd thing, if the lens is taken OUT of IS mode and I'm attempting to manually focus it the darn system keeps changing the focus, when I switch back to IS it holds my focus but for landscape shots on a tripod I'd rather not use IS. I tried everything, single shot, continuous, etc along with different focusing areas and no matter what if IS isn't enabled the lens has a mind of it's own once switched to manual. Maybe in time I'll get at the Sony 70-200, I only kept mine for shooting concert performers in dark places but then again maybe by that time sensors will be so good 2.8 lenses won't be needed. I was surprised how sharp the 24-105 is, I just ordered the 100-400 and I'm hoping it's just as good. Thanks again for the video, will be sure to use your links as well when I get those gloves.

Haha. But it's SOOO TRUE. Can't get it back. Honestly I think there's a psychological part that makes you feel like you're taking photography to an entirely higher level when you bust out your grads.
@jiggyb215 жыл бұрын
@@lakejindsay Agreed. For me, I think the best part of photography is being outside and enjoying my technology. And my wife understands that. On the contrary, I don't really enjoy sitting at my computer longer than necessary and my wife doesn't so much see that as part of taking a picture. To her, everything looks fine. So I'd say it's yet another example of different people with different goals and everyone should be more understanding of that.
@pipari215 жыл бұрын
@@jiggyb21 To be fair, vignetting is easier to correct in post than for example under exposed mountain in the middle that you might get using grads. Also I have seen many videos where people add vignetting in post in landscape photos... Heaton included. I can think of cases when I would rather use grads than post processing but I cannot justify the cost and weight of set of grads. My opinion only :)

@SwitchRich I'm a 25 yr cabinet maker and if I had entertained every new technique that came out that was intended to make everything better, I would be making the same grade cabinets as my less successful competitors. As I said before, the bottom line for me is that the closer to complete I can get an image in the field, the less I toe the line that has become a world where various AI filters are an accepted part of photography. I prefer to keep my hobby mostly in the field, that's all. I'm not arguing that masking can't produce a technically superior result, but the art of creation has never been about technicalities for me.

I moved from LEE to Breakthrough screw ins ones 18 months ago and live them but i've recently brought some of their magnetic ones and found them very dissapointing. the idea is sound but the reality does not live up to the hope - i've found no lens cap or cover that fits over the magnetic adapter, so you have to take the adapter on and off each time, which negates the quick and ease of use idea. Lee filters have good white caps so you can leave the adapters on the lens most of the time. you cant do that with Breakthrough, which fo the magnetic adapters makes them pretty useless.

I tend to go between a 1.1Kg super light tripod and a 2.1Kg (2 if I use the shorter center column) big beefy setup. The 24-105 F4, thoughts (I looked to see if you had a video)? I have a Sony 24-240 that I bought for travel and hiking in 2015. It works well, but I have wondered whether the 24-105 would pair better with since I upgraded to 42.5MP. If it has better detail - I could effectively crop to zoom. Also is the 18mm your only prime? Suprised you don't have a macro.

I bring either a pair of sandals, or a lightweight mesh shoe to wear over them, that way they dont get heavy and take forever to dry out.. and I can either hike in with my hiking boots, and hike back out with nice dry boots, or just wear the tennisshoes during the hike.. sometimes I just wear them all day.

Thank you for the great video! Is it okay to carry a tripod on a side of backpack? I understand that it is the most convenient way, but it makes the backpack unbalanced and for a short trip it is acceptable, but after a few day hiking, your back may start to feel bad).

agreed if I was going on long long hikes over 5 miles it could get annoying maybe, but there are other ways to mount the tripod in those cases, on the back or even on the top if need be. but it doesn't bother me too much on the side

Love you and your videos but MAN, you overpack my friend! Card wallet and a bag for cloths and also an emergency bag that contains...cards and lens cloths. Guess I still have a backpacking mindset that saves on weight by reducing redundancy (live and backpack, photograph in the Canadian Rockies, all 4seasons). Anyway, love the content and love your photography, if all this gear is required, keep up the amazing work!

Admittedly this is my long photo trip we’re packing if it’s just a short single session I obviously don’t take so much stuff. But if I’m going on a long multi-day trip this is what I bring

I too love your videos. I also purchased couple of your video courses. They are wonderful! I'd love to do an Oregon trip with you. I've been thinking about making the switch from Canon 5D III to Sony A7R III. Question: Did you sell your Canon gear? If so, did you go private party or what? Thanks again.
