it was pretty fun to make this video. let me know if you like videos like these. and also what shoes you want me to CUT UP NEXT???? I spend 2 hours cutting up these shoes chopping it down to 8 minute was pretty hard to do haha. love y'all. I think ima make a patreon. Hope you guys help out the channel and my future with KZbin. that would be amazing. Be able to still give my honest opinion and not need sponsors to support myself. :)

the blue piece of plastic is called a shank. they’re put in boots to keep ur arches from getting messed up like climbing ladders n shit. they put em in the AVEs so they stay stiff and protect u from primo

this video reminded me of Rose Anvil and what he does to boots. in case you never heard of him, he cuts shoes in half and does deep analysis over what he finds out. he mostly does this to quality leather boots, but in the past he had dedicated to cutting sneakers. he did an episode over some regular Vans once but he never really got into cutting skate shoes in half, which is a bummer because i think that would be really interesting, finding out the construction differences from skate shoe to skate shoe, and how that translates to their performance. honestly Chris, i think that if you start doing more of these dissections, you're gonna fill in the niche that Rose Anvil left in the skating department, which is gonna be a huge service to the skating community. you could potentially expose how mediocre some overhyped shoes are, and in general just create interesting, helpful content for skaters. his channel is hugely informative and just fun. i personally would absolutely be addicted to this type of content, i have craved for it for such a long time. as for the construction of these two shoes, it doesn't surprise me that they have a similar upper construction. i think most Pro models from Vans have a similar upper construction, just from looking at the stitching on them. that tongue shape you demonstrated in the video is technically called a winged tongue construction, which is super interesting because it's a very archaic form of construction that i wasn't aware Vans used. it does make sense for them to use some sort of winged construction considering the DuraCap layer, but I'm curious to know whether the suede on the outside of the tongue also extends down the sides of the shoe, because that was something you didn't really show in detail. it looks like the tongue doesn't flange out to the sides, and the DuraCap is simply glued to a layer of fabric, but i would like to see in more detail. I'm also curious to know how the Pro Classics are constructed, because, afaik, none of those seem to have a winged tongue, just from looking at the stitch lines, but they also seem to have a relatively wide toecap which probably covers the whole length of the DuraCap. but the big difference i can see in these is the sole construction. the Berles are so freaking disappointing. you would think that, since it is a cupsole shoe, there would be more layers in the sole, but no, it is just a rubber outsole with a stitched insole on top. that is ridiculously garbage quality, you can compare it to any respectable cupsole skate shoe out there, which will always have some sort of midsole. Nike Air Jordans are cups and they obviously have that Air midsole and Emerica has photos of their shoes cut in half, and you can really see the difference in the soles of their cup shoes vs. their vulc shoes, the main difference being how much more cushioning cups have in the midsole and how the vulc shoes need to overcompensate with their insoles. honestly, with the Berles, i don't see much reason for it to be a cup instead of a vulc. the main advantage of cupsoles is that you don't put them inside an oven like you do in vulcs, which would usually compromise the structure of the materials in the sole. this allows the producer to put certain materials in the sole of cupsoles that wouldn't be possible in vulc shoes. but since the Berles have absolutely nothing for a midsole, what even is the point? although i don't personally like the AVEs, they're definitely more respectable than the Berles. at the very least, they have a reason to be cupsoles with that midsole foam + plastic shank which is very interesting, as well as a layer of fiberboard between the midsole and the insoles, which the Berles don't even have the decency to have. if you end up doing more of this in the future, which i seriously wish you do, I'd like to see more attention to the heel counter of the shoes. they're extremely important for the shoe overall, not only for skating. I'd love to know the shape of the heel counter, the materials it's made out of and in which layer it is stuffed inside the construction of the shoe. I'd also be interested to know about the padding, where it begins and ends and also how thick it is. Tabletile. this video was amazing

That plastic on the arch area of the AVE is called a shank and it's there to stabilize the sole and keep it from bending in half in the middle. it's probably there because the outsole is so thin that it doesnt provide much support on it's own. Boots with heels usually have these and they are sometimes made out of metal.

I definitely want to get some AVEs and test them out for myself. They are definitely slimmer than what I'd like but everyone recommends them so I feel like I gotta give them a chance. The berle I'll probably never buy just because the insole is stiched in. That's a deal breaker for me

so just to point something out.... the Berle was designed without a midsole/lasting board. all that was built into the actual cupsole. which is why the tread on the Berle is so deep. so the insole was stitched in because there is no midsole. the idea was that the sole would double as the midsole and outsole. sole sole sole.... not sure if it was a good idea. but that was the idea. haha.
@DavidBluetile
@DavidBluetile 3 жыл бұрын
im replying to myself because I'm dumb. the Ave has a midsole. like most (all other) shoes. the Berles outsole is heavier because it is designed to also act as the midsole.... again... reference the deep channels of grip in the Berle. like almost shafts of waffle cup on that heal....

The AVE PRO is WAAAYYY better than the Berle PRO. Skated both shoes. Berle PRO was too stiff in the outsole and the AVE PRO broke in really quick and the Cup Sole in that shoe performed like a Vulcanized.

The shank is not there to provide arch support (but perhaps is also colored that way for aesthetics). The shank is supposed to provide structural stability which many skate shoes lack.

Yo cousin. Lol. And yeah maybe. But is that part the shank? I fail to see how that little pice of rubber or Plastic helps. Haha
@bryanflo4500
@bryanflo4500 3 жыл бұрын
@@christianflores Qué onda, primooo! I believe it's the shank, yeah. I suppose I should add that in this case, the hard plastic adds stability in that it makes the shoe more rigid overall. It won't flex as much or flop out compared to a conventional skate shoe sans shank. The material it's made of is kind of arbitrary. A lot of dress shoes have a wooden shank in their centers for the same reason!

With this whole boardfeel trend, shoe companies started to simply take mid soles away that they ve developed/researched and started to market the cheaper shoes as "boardfeel" shoes. When Vans started to offer cupsoles again they didnt even bother developing/buying different material for their midsoles. They just made the Berle without one and the Ave with 2 stacked insoles and sold those for ridiculous prices. Also that piece of plastic helps when you primo, that's something I wanted in a skate shoe for ever.
