Late, but agreed. It's sad and unfortunate how he only focused on the silly joking part of Eurovision and not the genuinely good and serious performances. I feel like this will only encourage people to make fun of Europe and their music and is not a good representation.

I'm Romanian so i think i can share this with confidence. One thing that America will not understand EVER about Eurovision is that, this song contest is to feel good, make a show ,enjoy and celebrate yourself as a country/culture and other countries and a way to land support to a country that maybe didn't have a good year and hey if we happened to win fine that is great and if we don't that is fine to we had a blast at least. I feel that America would take this to seriously and just want to win. Don't understand me wrong Eurovision its not a silly contest it means so much for us Europeans it brings us closer as a continent through music but the wholesomeness of the ''we are here to vibe' and vibe only" even if that means we make a fool out of ourselves sometimes is what makes it ten times better and is something that America (USA) doesn't posses because you want to be the worlds best and that does not apply here because is not only about that.

People always whine about "neighbour voting", but they never seem to entertain the idea that neighbouring countries probably have similar culture and taste. There is some nepotism (in lack of a better word) of course, but I truly think most people vote for music they like

You need to be a member of the EUROPEAN BROADCASTING UNION which Australia is a member of... don't necessarily need to be a European country to be eligible !!
@TomaszDK5 жыл бұрын
But Australia is not a member of the EBU, they are associate member, and that does not give you entry to the contest. The reason Australia is in it now, is that they were invited to participate, one single time. But the viewers loved them, so they have been invited back every year since 2015. The reason they were invited in the first place, is that Eurovision has been popular in Australia since 1983, with more and more viewers each year.

I think you should take that "most countries don't want to win" thing as a joke. If you don't want to win, you can just not participate in the first place. Several countries have declined to participate because of economic reasons.
@benjaminmarker4 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm pretty sure that DR (Danish broadcaster) do not want to win again, since they almost got bankrupt last time. I think they are just in it to promote Denmark with a feel good song, like Love, love, peace, peace...
@ZakhadWOW4 жыл бұрын
something hardly anyone gets accurate: you are not required to host yourself. Admittedly the Big 5 wouldnt be able to decline, given their economies, etc, but if say CYprus won (near miss in 2018) it might be able to convince Greece or Italy or wahtever to host. Iceland was a fan favorite for this year, but they probably would have tried to finagle someone else to do it, as they only have a small population and not a lot of money. UK has hosted several times when it hadn't won the ear before... 1974 for example, famous because of ABBA winning and launching their career

You can get involved and vote for the winner now even though you can't compete. There is now a "rest of the world vote" incorporated into the final voting. The competition is usually held throughout the evening in Europe on a Saturday in May. Usually from about 8pm-12am BST, which would be 3pm-7pm EDT.

Germany complained about not being in the final round but contributed over 5x the fee than other countries. Thus the big 5. He said that Latvia and Lithuania doesn’t take the competetion seriously, cause we bring trolls. And yes sometimes you do but it’s in order to win. If you attract attention you get a good place or in some cases win. Latvia has actually won once and takes competition seriously. I never heard tho that you bring someone who sucks in order to lose. Not even in lithuania(we don’t take it too seriously) we always vote for the best one that year to go to eurovision. Problem is that we have no one to send and it’s the same for many countries, and then there’s a money problem. Those performances cost millions of dollars. It’s crazy and poor small countries just can’t be on the same level as France, Sweden or Germany (just to name a few)

To host Eurovision costs between 35 and 50 million€. I think Russia spend 70 million€. Azerbaijan didn't have arena for Eurovision, so they built one in a year for 50 million€ and host it for another 50 million€. Around 3000 journalists and delegation members stay for two weeks during Eurovision. Irish delegation spent 336 000€ for two weeks in Israel in 2019.

If Eurovision is an exclusive “European” event I don’t understand why some countries like Israel has been authorized to be part of the contest the latest years. Plus, Russian and others former Soviet Union countries always vote for each other. It looks like a pretty cheap and expensive contest which don’t even have a diplomatic purpose anymore. As a French person I never liked it. Some great singers (ABBA, Celine Dion, Lara Fabian...) used to be part of the contest but I doubt Eurovision have never be useful for their big break for their respective careers... besides ABBA. Celine Dion returned in Canada and moved in USA no longer after that. In the other hand, Lara Fabian goes from Belgium to Canada and needed more years to build her own path... the most surprising fact for me was when an Australian expat in Paris told me she loved Eurovision and watched it since she was a little girl... I didn’t know the contest was broadcasted there...
@swanpride5 жыл бұрын
It's not an European event, it is an event hosted by the Eurovision broadcaster, which MAINLY broadcasts in Europe, but not exclusively. Until one year ago Israel was one of the countries which used this broadcaster. Australia is the exception...they were simply invited because they were such huge fans of the contest as special act, and eventually they were allowed to compete too, simply because they were so excited about it and brought such great acts. I suspect that Eurovision has some sort of agreement with the local broadcaster to make this possible. And I do think that it still has a diplomatic purpose still. It's a great opportunity to show off your local culture, fans connect across countries with each other and while the "neighbour" voting is annoying, it is kind of part of the fan. Remember, most people don't really WANT their country to win, they just want to place highly enough that they haven't embarrassed themselves. Because the winner is forced to host, which doesn't really come cheap.
