This makes more sense than my theory, that it just surrounded the stairs like a banister to avoid accidental falls where the stairs weren't. Since the cutout is larger than the stair starting point.

I would imagine that the circular wall protected the top of the opening of the spiral staircase with the opening in front was where the staircase opened up. I’ll bet that there were posts on either side to stabilize the wall, along with a handrail on top. You would need something like this to keep people from falling into the opening of the staircase, and down the spiral staircase inadvertently.

I think the curved woodwork is to stop people from falling down the staircase from the top. It looks good quality. I also think next door has got your spiral staircase, probably bought it off the nuns dead cheap. I expect we are all off to a brocante looking for a replacement, however it would be lovely to have one made bespoke. Every little corner of the convent brings new, interesting stuff. The chapel is just glowing with the new lighting. Really special stuff we are witnessing every day.🥰

Looks like there was a stair case for choral access to this level. There was probably more of the wood wall up there at some point I would guess. Would be nice to ask some of the locals what their memories of the chapel are.
@carnacthemagnificent24982 жыл бұрын
I agree with Ryan, that hole in the floor is extremely dangerous as-is. A slab of plywood would make it less so but even that, with the span you have, would be dicey. And the difficulty of getting it in place. If it were me I'd bring a bunch of 2x4s long enough to cover the span up and screw them together to make a solid cover. A bit of a trip hazard with 2" of wood sticking up but at least you wouldn't see someone plunge 12' to the ground. But I'm a bit nutty, after living with elderly people I'm the guy who walks into a room and immediately scans around to identify all the things that could trip people so take that as context for my comments.
@prokkle47652 жыл бұрын
Yes, it worries me too. It only takes a moment of inadvertence and someone's life is ended or changed forever. I don't think you are being overcautious here.
@angelaprovencher71502 жыл бұрын
Billy I have to agree with Ryan , that it is dangerous to just have cardboard over the big hole in the floor , although you said that someone would have to have a ladder to get up there.. Even if you know that there is a hole in the floor you could still accidentally step on part of the cardboard while working up there and lose your balance and fall into the big hole under the cardboard. If it was me up there working I would surely end up falling cause even though I know it's there I would forget about it being there. Surely you could put long boards over the hole. Then put a sign saying warning be careful hole under the boards do not step on them. Then maybe rope it off or put cones up around it.

Looking at the original paneling, I'd say that when the Chapel was built there was no gallery or door but a full size window to match the others. So that makes the room with the spiral staircase a later addition and the same with your office window.

Billy, at 4:13 to 4:28 - if you look at the slats of wood and their color, they match the archway slats above Ryan's head. Could it be that the curved wooden item was a continuation of the archway? Could it have been the entrance of the curved staircase? The width of the slats seem to match the width of the floor to the "hole". From having worked in cathedrals and churches over the years, the choir loft would have been at the back of the chapel with possibly a pipe organ at its center. The "room" you are standing in might have been used to store music books or hymn books. Maybe even the choir director's desk. It would make sense that a toilet was installed as the choir members would have made too much noise going up and down the stairs to relieve themselves during a service. The sink and counter may have been part of the sacristy - where flower bouquets were arranged or where they washed the sacred bowls and plates. All of this of course is the "Convent Guessing Game" on my part. But the mystery and discovery of each part of it is enthralling and keeps me coming back. I LOVE the warm lighting in the chapel itself. You've done a marvelous job. For the circular staircase - I wouldn't go with metal. And check the outdoor buildings. Could be that some of the materials and items from the convent have been stored there. Maybe reach out to the neighbors and people of the village - have you checked out the historical or town archives yet?

Billy, I continue to be impressed with your desire to restore the convent to its former glory. I can easily envision the chapel being used for weddings, and the large adjacent spaces for wedding receptions, etc., if non-denominational weddings are the norm in France. You’ve done an amazing job with restoration so far. I’d get Shawn and the boys working on the apartments to get them ready to generate some additional revenue. Still trying to figure out what to do with the former nuns rooms . Again, its not clear to me what’s popular in France. In any event, Bravo from Canada!
