Billy, You may find that trying to make the bell pivot/swing for peeling will be an engineering matter given the swing weight and lateral movement inherent in the combination of horizontal movement of the center of gravity of the bell and its swinging back. As you suggest the attachment for simply pulling the hanging clapper may have made for a simpler installation after being moved from its initial installation. One small parish church I served in Yorkshire had a large bell (approximately 125 CM throat) installed during construction in the 17th century and three smaller brass ships bells salvaged from ships that floundered on the nearby coast line over the years. As the structure of the bell tower aged, the church Chapter and wardens decided to use the clappers to hammer the bells rather than swing them. The ropes were fed through side-mounted pulleys before hanging down into the base of the tower. Weights were added to the clappers to make them fall away from the side of the bell after striking and pull the rope back up for the next pull as the tower was 21 meters tall and the bell ropes were heavy. Also, rigging the cable(s) necessary to raise the bell may be best achieved by a rigging crew. Talk to a professional theater/stage crew director or utilities crew with experience in lifting heavy object safely with cables. Best wishes for a successful hanging! Fr. Thomas

I agree. You should ask an engineer to come in before you hang up the bell just to make sure you are putting it up correctly.

Please hire professionals.
@dt528bmw2 жыл бұрын
I agree totally. Swinging a bell of that weight would require an engineering inspection of the structure and evaluation of the condition and capabilities of the wood supports. 275 lbs of dead weight would destroy everything in it's path should it break loose and fall.
@KrisanthiaMum2 жыл бұрын
Now this makes sense. We have 3 bells in our tower and they do not move. They are ran off the “pulley” system with counter weights. Our tower is a huge elongated metal pyramid that holds the 3 bells and sits beside the church. I love hearing them.

Such good information, Father! Talking to a theater crew is a great idea. I remember learning that large construction projects used to hire sailors because they knew how to rig ropes - theater crews have similar cross-training.

Use a bees wax candle to apply a thin layer of wax to the outside of the bell to protect it from weathering.... Go to the manufacturer / foundry to pull history for that bell... i e dates and purchase details. They should also be able to provide hanging, ringing and rope and care requirements! So exciting!

Before you ring that bell for the first time you have got to let the people of the town know because to them it will be cause of great celebration. Blessings
@babawali30212 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Let the local population know in advance of the official first bell ringing, else they might be confused by or even fearful from the new noise. Is the Strasbourg foundry still in business? Representatives from the foundry might also be invited for the first ringing. The bell number will tell you how old the bell is (i.e., when the bell was cast).

It looks like you will need a lot of rope for the bell ...i needed rope for my turret stairs on my little Chateau ...i could not find any in France ..I got it in the end from the Navel Dockyard Chatham Kent UK it is made from Hemp... It's very common for bells to have two methods for ringing. One would be the standard rope pull to swing the bell, and the second would be an automated or rope-pulled striker to allow for signals or specific numbers of rings. Seriously cool - thanks for sharing this process.

Some thing to think about. I was in Venice in 2019 and climbed St Mark's bell tower. The bells were rung quite frequently, possibly on the half hour. They had installed a system where the bells no longer swung but were struck with a hammer externally. The hammer was on a fixed bracket next to the bell so the only moving part was the hinge point for the hammer which was operated by an electric solenoid. I have tried to post a picture but KZbin won't let me do that. I'm thinking that given the weight of the bell and the height you have to get it up to, it may be much simpler and easier the have the bell be in a fixed position so you don't have to worry about pivots for the bell. Also, it will be a lot easier to ring the bell with an electrical setup rather than trying to rig up ropes and pulleys. Just my 2c worth.

This is really great. No one can tell that you are really excited about that bell! LOL. Just kidding. We are excited too. You might contact the people at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in England. They have been making bells for hundreds of years. They made the Centennial Bell for America's Bicentennial, and I believe that it was they who cast the Liberty Bell. [It had some issues.] They will know everything about casting bells. I seem to recall that bells are cast in a mold and sand is involved in some fashion. That could be the impurities that were around the top of the bell. [They are cast upside-down. We ordered our Handbells from Whitechapel, [sort of the Bentley of Bell Foundries] and the people there were really wonderful to work with. I'm sure they have a website. Take care. I'll bet Michael is excited about the bell too. Happy Hallowe'en.

You have a brilliant mind, Billy. It's not the first time I've marveled at how you figured out what something from the past is for and here, of course, I'm referring to the old cabinet up in the bell tower which was an old casing for the clock mechanism to time the ringing of the bells (I hope I've got that right). You can re silver plate the bell by, I think it is called brush plating. You do the same as if you immersed the bell in a plating bath but instead of immersing it you dip a brush; this is a sort of pad on a handle with a wire going to the electrical; i’ve forgotten if it is cathode or anode, think it is the first, and the other pole to the bell, adjust current and just keep dipping the pad into the silver plating solution; Cyanide based as I remember then wiping it onto the bell. I also remember it took a Bl**dy long time. Just a thought.

When I was a child in the 1960s, the ringing of the bell was a tradition that had its roots in the horse and buggy farm days of 1900. The bells would be rung a half hour before service time. If you were within hearing of the bell, that gave you a half hour to walk to church. Then the bell was rung again at start of service time.
@kempedkemp2 жыл бұрын
I was under the impression that bells used in churches were inscribed with their baptismal name. I'd recommend getting a new clapper for best results. There is a German firm, I believe, that specializes in them. I'll look that up. Clappers wear over the years and need replacement.
@prokkle47652 жыл бұрын
This may not be an ecclesiastical bell, though. There was something in the inscription, the word "horologe" which implies it was a clock tower bell.

I have a question, when you do hang the bell up are there any laws you have to abide by there like certain times or events you can only ring it for? Love the videos thank you so much
