Nu Metal is perhaps the most misunderstood music genre. Let's explain what it really is. I don't own the music, just using it for educational purposes.

Korn never used turntables. That was all guitars. For everyone who thinks nu metal is nothing but Limp Bizkit and other "cringe-worthy" bands, listen to Korn's first album and I'm sure you'll be proven wrong

I believe Nu-metal's nature is to be more of an underground music than mainstream despite the fact that Korn pushed this genre into the mainstream right off the bat, simply due to the fact that it's hard music to make, hard not in technical sense but in psychological, cause in order to be taken seriously as a numetal band you have to express something thats painful or uncomfortable otherwise you end up being like Limp Bizkit. I also believe you nailed "subversion of childhood innocence" part completely as this I think is core/spirit of numetal. Keep making more stuff dood, this is very constructive and overall interesting.

Almost exactly👍But Korn didn't push "nu" into the mainstream. It was the mainstream who went straight to them and all the crew(Deftones,Coal Chamber,Slipknot later),specifically MTV bc of pop was being so corny and sassy for 90s youth, used to grunge sounds !!!

I think this is the best description I've heard for Nu-metal as a cohesive genre, I might start using it like this now tbh, I always used to think of Nu metal as a cultural movement rather than a specific style of metal since there's no reasonable way to say that Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Deftones sound the same, but they did all spawn from the same kind of place culturally, but that always left Korn without a name for their style and made them very hard for me to describe, so I like this idea a lot

I think Nu Meal is the treatment of their instrument differently. Guitars riffs support the drums, and bass leads instead of the lead guitar. Resulting in a more heavier sounding music, but rhythmically balanced in so the piece comes together like art. Also how they play wiht their instruments as if they're different instruments, like guitar as turntble, and the prolonging of tthe screeching effect f the lead guitar. It's actually unique to this genre, gives off their creepy vibe; in which their "issues" lay. This genre is for people who has issues, and the lyrics corroborate that. If you switch the lyrics into a more upbeat, hopeful lyrics, it would nt work, because of the imagery these sounds produces. A creepy, and yet otherwordly vibe. Nu Metal is special in that it acknowledges the negative mental state that is possible in humanity/society. The media coverage of it has stained its significance over the years, but true nu metal will forever be the heaviest genre of all music, simply because it hits the core of humanities negative psychology. It's not a fad. It's an experience.

Even as someone who's always had a soft spot for nu-metal, I've never quite looked at it in the same way you've described it, but something really clicked for me now that I've watched this. There still really isn't any other album quite like the self-titled Korn album. It's that feeling I used to get as a child. Someone who wasn't given a fair chance to understand themselves or the world that they live in. Sure they're still in that immature, undeveloped phase in their life, but that kind of mental and emotional space is still there, and worse when they don't have the tools or experience to deal or cope with their trauma. It's also why a lot of people may describe Korn as "whiny", but that's kind of all you can do when you're literally a kid and don't know how to make sense of your emotional traumas. We're not in this stoic or super masculine headspace here. That's how I interpret the Korn album, along with the imagery of urban life and that general feeling of poverty and dinginess. But that one specific feeling of having night terrors as a kid, that never really comes through the same way in any other band lumped together with the "nu-metal" label. Makes me identify with the album in a very personal way. Even Korn couldn't replicate that on their later works. Lightning in a bottle.

The style of Korn is what i love the most. Its not something thats trying to be hardcore or creepy or brutal, its real and genuine uncanny discomfort. I love deftones and I’d put somewhat put them into numetal label. They have really bouncy riffs and sometimes rapping. They also don’t include any solos. One of the best summaries of the genre I’ve heard (other than saying Korn has turntables, but the guitars do simulate turntable sounds so it still kinda counts) I think other good things to bring up would be how it often flirts with punk (Snot, for example), industrial (Static X, Orgy, “Helmet in the Bush” by Korn), and even shoegaze (Deftones)

Awesome video! I do agree with the fact that Nu-metal is a complex genre to understand by metalheads and that's because metal elites never gave subgenres of Nu-metal since they clearly hate the genre. There are early 90's/2000's- mid 90's/2000's albums that combined Nu Alternative metal, Nu-metalcore, Nu-funk metal, Nu-latin metal, Nu-thrash metal, Nu-industrial metal, and Nu-punk metal. The fascinating thing about Nu-metal is that certain bands don't even rap, they either use melodic singing/creepy singing, whispering, screaming, djent nu- riff, or using rhythmic vocals styles. I also agree that Limb Biskit isn't purley Nu-metal but from their early albums, they had the down tune djent Korn riff, screaming, and in your face angry/ depressing music.

This might or might not be hard: Prog Specifically 2 questions in addition to an intro: 1. Prog is a term commonly tacked on to another, like Prog Death. When does bringing prog elements over to another genre cease to attain the prog prefix entirely? I hear a lot of modern metalcore bands with a similar sound to prog but don’t seem to attain the prog prefix. 2. Is the term ‘Prog’ getting diluted? With my limited understanding it seems to be a term for new, innovative music that progresses a genre further creatively. These days it seems there are more and more prog bands with similar sounds getting labelled Prog. Is this similar to how indie used to mean independent artist, but now seem to have become a sound itself? Love your videos!

I don't remember anyone in the right mind refering to post grunge bands like Nickelback or industrial metal acts like Marilyn Manson as "nu metal" (though Manson did briefly dabble in the genre). It's hard to really summarize what "nu-metal" was but if I had to, it was basically heavy metal trying to get away from it's old 1980s roots (by then acts like Iron Maiden and Ozzy were seen as something akin to "dad rock") and find a new "indentity" in the late 90s, an era when hip-hop was starting to outsell rock, goth was becoming mainstream thanks to Marilyn Manson and Hot Topic, and with alternative rock/grunge pretty much dead, kids needed new angsty music to listen to. Nu-metal was more or less a rough algamation of all those things. I think that was biggest problem with nu-metal, it couldn't really decide what it wanted to be and just became a heavy metal "frankenstein" of ideas that just didn't really mesh together. Incidently have you seen Punk Rock MBA's video on nu-metal? He does a pretty good retrospective.

What a great explanation on what really defines this genre. You really brought up some good points and practically changed my perspective on the genre. I always loved Nu/Rap Metal as it was what introduced me to the harder side of rock music before eventually going further into Extreme Metal, and while I could somewhat tell the obvious difference between the two genres, you really expanded the diffences further. On another note, I never considered Rap Metal as a stealing of black culture and any fellow black person who has a problem with that or a white person who's a rapper in general should really just stfu. The pioneering of Metal as whole stems from the roots of Gospel and Blues, notably Chuck Berry, which are black founding genres. My culture contributed HEAVILY to music but that doesn't mean other people aren't allowed to share in their love for the music. Music is music. People love music. That's what makes up part of our attributes of being human. It shouldn't be about what culture did what. It should be about people loving music. Just my two cents anyway...

I agree! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hopefully I will be able to elaborate my ideas better in the future. I think had some really good points here and in the cultural cringe video, but some people seemed to have misinterpreted what I meant. I do not think they "stole" culture. I think that many saw a lacking in their own culture and embraced aspects of another culture to fill the void. I probably worded things poorly, and made it seem like a bad thing. I was particularly disparaging towards Rap Metal, but hopefully I can make things clearer in upcoming videos.

I love the analysis here and what you're doing with this channel, but I also think the way you're defining nu-metal here is maybe a bit too narrow when Korn's S/T album is kind of a unicorn, even within their own discography (even though it is probably the most important nu-metal album). I actually think it's fair game to say the cheeky humor/party/troll-y side is also a valid part of the genre, because I think that can be interpreted as a kind of coping mechanism for trauma as well. It's also undeniable that Korn and Limp Bizkit were inextricably linked in the late 90s, with Korn being directly responsible for them getting signed in the first place. The Family Values 98 and 99 tours, to me, represent the peak of nu-metal. It started with a more grunge/underground place but very quickly evolved into a genre that embraced big arena shows and a larger than life atmosphere. Point being, I think Limp Bizkit is absolutely a valid part of the nu-metal genre/conversation. Firstly because their debut with Three Dollar Bill was super raw/angsty in its own right, full of influence from hardcore, grunge and alternative. It's not uncommon for the debut album from bands in this genre to be the most raw, down and dirty one-- because bands are young, hungry, full of bottled up emotion. Secondly because they didn't downplay their hip-hop influence the way other bands in the movement did, yet hip-hop influence is still a big piece of the puzzle here in your definition of what nu-metal is. LB openly embraced it, even if to the point of ridicule/parody at times. And I think one of the defining characterstics of nu-metal was that it was really about mixing and blending other styles of music with metal. So for me, "true" nu-metal is really more about that specific era than anything. It was the first time in history you could have a tour lineup that included the likes Korn, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Method Mad & Redman, Rammstein, Primus, etc. and have those audiences mingle under one roof. I look at it kind of like the horror genre with film. Bands like Korn and Slipknot lean more into the serious/disturbing side of the genre. But there's also room for the campy/humorous aspect as well. Horror and comedy can compliment each other really nicely.

Good video. I often think about this topic and, if you allow me to contribute to the discussion, I'd like to say a one thing: I think your approach to define what Nu Metal is, is actually going the other way around. What I mean by this is that things exist in the material world and then get named. You seem to have tried to make up a concept of what Nu Metal should be and then tried to see what bands fitted in it. We as humans actually do that all the time, but I think that's not the best approach. Think of sports. Sports are not something easy to define but we seem to kind of know what they are despite that. If you think of a sport as a game you play while doing some type of physical exercise, that's not really true because chess is considered a sport, shooting is a sport, F1 is a sport... You see what I mean? So there are all these bands considered Nu Metal and most people seem to agree that they are indeed Nu Metal bands, but it is still not easy to point a finger on what they have in common. But they are all Nu Metal. Some of the examples you gave really seem too farfetched, but Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, System of a Down, Linkin Park... These are all pretty much unanimously considered "Nu Metal". So I think the best approach is to analyze them and figure out what they have in common. Wikipedia does a good job with that, in my opinion.

I don't remember where exactly, but I read an article by a Chilean metalhead about that topic. All of what we usually refer to as nü metal (the second definition used on this video) is just basically a second wave of alternative metal, with the first one hitting in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

So, I'm pretty balls deep so to speak in Nu Metal, so let me tell ya something... the thing about Nu Metal is it's personal. Personal in a way that most Metal just isn't. And this is all coming from a HUGE Sludge Metal guy, (which I also consider to be lyrically personal in regards to the depressing and hopeless since of it). Anyway, I define Nu Metal as late 90s/early 2000s Heavy alternative music. Very very broad, it includes this deeply personal stuff, to cringe worthy(cheesy) stuff, to super F'd up stuff. If you want to hear the lengths Nu Metal has gone to, just listen to the song 'Helio - Painmaker'. And there's plenty more like Helio.

I honestly think the term "Nu-metal" should be used for the era of the more mainstream breakthrough of alternative music than as an attempt to describe a specific "genre." Like slipknot is also decribed as nu metal due to their use of turntable, but aside from that, they have almost nothing in common with Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc aside from happening to be relativly successful at around the same time.

There’s very few “true” nu metal because if often went into completely different directions depending on the band, going Industrial like Orgy, Spineshank or Static-X, Slipknot had a Death Metal edge on Iowa, Staind on their first album Tormented is basically a big melting pot of all the contemporary metal genres at the time such as Sludge, Grunge, Groove under a convenient Nu Metal label, Early Deftones and Snot were very Post-Hardcore, with Deftones eventually turning into a Hum-esque shoegaze band, and even bands like early Mushroomhead, Mr. Bungle, and even Incubus on their major label debut S.C.I.E.N.C.E took things to the Avant-grade. The only “true” Nu-Metal bands I’d say are bands like Coal Chamber or Kittie, which are very Korn-like. Rap Metal is indeed different, however I often think of Limp Bizkit’s first album Three Dollar Bill as a pseudo-Nu Metal album, it’s more similar to Snot with its punk aggression and screaming (which Fred is really friggin good at). I appreciate you trying to clear things up in this video, Nu Metal is indeed a hard genre to pin down.

@@whatsinameme5258 I would say taht the first two albums of Deftones are nu metal, Around The Fur does take a lot of influences from Post-Hardcore on that record already, since they are big fans of post-hardcore bands, but those two albums are very nu metal, they ceased to be nu metal at White Pony, which still has a few nu metal songs and very few influences of it but that is when they became more of an Alt.Metal band with influences of Post-Metal and Shogaze.
