I assume it's been said, but a drop test for a brick is useless (and maybe even the worst kind of test). They operate in compression, not tension. So I guess now we need is the Hydraulic Press Channel to get some of these things in the press!

“Used brick” is likely more expensive because clay bricks from different runs don’t color match. They are betting contractors would pay more to get bricks from identical runs even if their used. Ok that's seriously not how you test a brick, the main thing you want to test in a brick is compressive strength. The bricks will never take any other kind of load at all, especially not impulse forces like chucking them imparts. And while we're at it, elon's idea is hare brained for reasons too complex to get into. Also also if it interlocks like legos, where does the most important part of a wall go, the cement that holds it together? Yes i'm fun at parties.

@@darmokVtS yes, yes you are. Soil variety varies wildly depending on the location and the depth. The reason they truck in new dirt is because said dirt is consistent and thus predictable
@NSResponder2 жыл бұрын
The. most important thing about a brick is how much compressive strength it has. A brick that survives a drop isn't necessarily better than one that break, because the loads that bricks have to take are almost never suddent impacts of hundreds of Gs. In fact, a brick that's tougher under impact is likely to be far weaker under compression, and therefore unsuitable for use in multi-story buildings.

If you look around on KZbin, you should be able to find the formula for making the bricks, and to build a press for these bricks is not that difficult. All you need is some land, clay, sand, cement and oxides, plus some willing laborers. The only thing is that the bricks take 4 to 5 weeks to cure, before they can be used. They also need to be tested to confirm compressive, shear strengths and water absorption.

The "used" clay brick is for face purposes, it's to be used in a decorative manner. Majority of "used" bricks aren't actually used but new bricks put through a tumbling process.

Bricks are not made to withstand impact force. So comparing bricks based on drop test doesn't prove anything. But fun video anyways

I strength of a Brick has never been determined by how it does in a drop test. It’s about compression
@askjacob4 жыл бұрын
It wasn't strength but durability. E.g. how well they can be shipped and handled onsite without damaging them. Strength is different as you mention, and is more important to the engineers and architects designing the buildings that use them

Used brick is used for mostly repair work in my experience. The idea is that the bricks fade so now bright red ones will stand out. They are more expensive because they have to be chipped out of a wall being demolished.

" brick" with wires sticking out is for supporting rebar off of the ground in a concrete slab pour.

I like how people are malding over his "totally scientific testing".
@companionofowls54384 жыл бұрын
The block with tie wire is called a "dobie" it's used to set reinforcing steel on so when concrete is poured the rebar is not touching the ground. Or sides of the forms
@everything7774 жыл бұрын
How are you meant to create a consistent product for a specific use when you will be drilling through varying rock/soil type mixes to make the tunnel?
@ludidd4 жыл бұрын
A real brick isn't made to be dropped, and it's less durably because there are little air holes inside to keep a lower temperature inside the house.

Old bricks exist simply because it has a more interesting look, texture and color. It is slightly more expensive because it is harder to find used bricks that have a vintage look and is still in a usable.

The small concrete blocks are for pouring concrete slabs they hold the rebar mat off the ground. The wire ties to the rebar to keep it in place.
