I have to say I’ve watched all the episodes many times and given the fact that I wasn’t alive for a lot of them because I wasn’t born until 1963 each and everyone of the panelists Dorothy Kilgallen, Arlene Francis and Bennett Cerf contributed greatly to the longevity of the show! However, there definitely was no substitute for John Charles Daly as the host! It truly is a shame that we’ve lost that type, of humor today.🧐🤔

Steve Allen appears and within minutes he's RAISED THE BAR of entertainment. Much as I like seeing a guest panellist each week, I do wish he'd stayed rather than been replaced by Fred Allen (who, I'm sorry, but I disliked very much). He may be 'only a comedian' but behind that comedy is a sharp, intelligent man with charisma, charm and a capacity for sociability that would light up any gathering. Unlike Fred Allen, he revved up the proceedings and made you feel good about the world for a short while. IN FACT, this whole segment and the final reveal was so enjoyable it made me well up with tears and applaud. Have I given the impression I like him, by any chance?

Bennett's intro to John Daly refers to the novelty song WITCH DOCTOR, which became a surprise #1 Billboard hit. The absurd lyrics were written and performed by Ross Bagdasarian (aka David Seville of the Alvin, Simon and Theodore chipmunk fame). This song rescued Liberty Records from near-bankruptcy.

SaveThe TPC -- Yup. "The Witch Doctor" came out in 1958, and all us kids (I turned six years old in 1958) went around singing "Ooh-ee, ooh-ah-ah, ting-tang, walla-walla bing-bang." We just couldn't resist. I remember they even performed it on Lawrence Welk -- one of his singers did it with the band playing. I note the performer of the hit record was Ross Bagdasarian performing as "David Seville", who also came up with Alvin, Simon and Theodore, the Chipmunks and performed the "straight" role on those records.

I wonder if the mattress demonstrator was there for product placement reasons - she ended by naming the mattress company (Englander, I think) and the vibrating mattress. The show has a sponsor but other companies often get a mention when a contestant says who he or she works for. I think Bennet Cerf was about to ask Steve Allen who was the publisher of his book but he got cut off by John Daly who wanted to give time to the final contestant.

Bennett Cerf often touted his so-called intellectual prowess and yet he didn’t guess the line of the woman who was the head of the Israeli women’s army. He should’ve known by both her first and last name alone which are Hebrew names. He was too busy focusing on her chemise. I was surprised - and pleased - that Arlene Francis knew that it was the 10th anniversary of Israel Bonds.

Miss Gershom, also known as Gershonovitz or Gershonowitz (transliteration creates multitudes) was born in Russia, as noted on the show, in 1906; emigrated to then-Palestine in 1925. Joined the British Army in its Palestinian offshoot (called the Haganah), co-founded the Women's IDF upon independence. Fought in the 1948 war. Came back to the US later this year as an attache to the Israeli Embassy, with a specific mandate to to connect with American women's groups. After her three years doing this, she disappears from the record. (Or, records I can find.) Died in 1986. Stand-Up Watch: Arlene did, Dorothy didn't. +Barbara Ludena Enh. I don't think it's sad, necessarily. It's just that she had a more conservative definition of who she chose to stand for -- technically, given the era's etiquette standards, she didn't really need to stand for anyone (other than like, Cardinals or other Official Figures). I don't even think it's disrespectful. I mean, personally, I like Arlene's approach more, but both are valid.

I was amazed that he got on the track with that one so quickly and figured out her line so easily! We can't blame his checking the newspapers ahead of time for that one. I wonder if the type of mattress demonstrations that the contestant did was fairly common in those days. It's certainly not something I'd ever really heard of except on this show (I think I might have seen a different contestant with a similar profession on another episode), so to me it seemed like it would be very unusual and hard to guess. It certainly had the potential to lead to some funny exchanges, but Bennett figured it out so quickly that that really didn't happen!

@Leigh Chapman Do you think maybe he'd stopped in front of a department store window to admire a display when suddenly appeared a comely young maid?

That happens 1 out of 30 times and this is one of them albeit the one which is a bit suspicious really. Meanwhile, Daly did it right by flipping some more cards.

I have seen all the episodes and some several times over. Many occupations repeated themselves. I recall another woman with the same line. Perhaps Bennett Cerf remembered the other woman and put two and two together. Cerf seemed very knowledgeable about what various cities were famous for. He knew every department store in Philadelphia.

I’m surprised that Bennett Cerf didn’t guess that Shoshana Gershon was Israeli because he was Jewish and the name Shoshana is a Hebrew name. As a matter fact my niece’s name is Shoshana and it means lily.

What a sham regarding Ms. Gershon. "Shoshona Gershon" is as Jewish as you can get, just as James Patrick O'Malley is Irish. They had to have known that from the first question.

I usually love the job that John Daly does as host/moderator. But when he congratulated the first challenger for her annoying way of answering the questions with hesitation even when a yes answer was obvious, I can't go along with him. (She was even annoying with how slowly she signed in.) I was glad when Bennett hit the right train of thought and guessed her quickly. All's right with the world when cheaters don't prosper.

With your permission, I would say this: I have reason to believe that circumstances would dictate that in the event of Mr John Daly acting as host/moderator wholly in and of itself, per se, as pertains to the appreciation of such a show as this; it is a foregone conclusion that one may or may not in fact surmise that a singular moment as part of a series of moments in this form of what may be described as a panel show in which one would not necessarily deem such a particular incident as congratulatory, as dictated by the agreed upon definition within the parameters of said reference to the state of a viewer, either at home or in the audience, and in matter of fact, also including the panelists and host, as not to forego the purveyor of such remark or action that in turn, and as a consequence would be seen to have an effect which could be described in part, as congratulation, in the context of effective application to the degree and in the broadest terms of reference as is par for the course, if properly applied...um... there you are!
