Your comment about thinking Kendrick never really respected Drake, I think he did, when he was starting out. But I imagine after touring with Drake, and being around him more and more, I think he started to see Drake in a different light. In the end, the fans don't know these people as well as they know each other. I'm thinking Kendrick *does* have good reasons behind his constant referencing of Drake.

Kendrick sounds angry, disappointed, giving Drake the therapy treatment, highlighting his talent on delivery with that last line. Kendrick's bar on father's time was rather Kendrick's reflection on how he thought a beef should last forever, that's why he said he was confused when Drake and Kanye got back. Then he said "guess I'm not as mature as I think", indicating that Drake and Kanye squashed their beef was above his level of maturity. He then proceeded to say "got some healing to do", stating that his overly competitive nature may came from daddy issues that he's been having his whole life, which was the main theme of the song Father's Time.

Why is he literally the ONLY person in the entire industry that took that "Control" verse so personal? He wasn't the only one mentioned on that verse... but somehow he's the only one to bitch about it. That's partly why Kendrick doesn't fuck w/ him. Kendrick made it a friendly competitive. Everybody Kendrick mentioned took it as a friendly competition. But Drake just had to be the one guy to go around bitching and moaning about it. There’s multiple things to analyze between the Drake v Kendrick beef, but what’s always bothered me is how Drake moves the goal post once he realizes he can’t win. At first he wanted to be lyrical then he realized he could be the best at that then changed the metric to bodies of work. Then Kendrick dropped 2 all-time generation defining albums and he realized he couldn’t be the best at that so he moved the goalpost to Grammys. Then Kendrick tied Michael Jackson for the most nominations (& won a Pulitzer) then he changed the narrative to money. It’s a shallowness that has largely driven the trajectory of his career since “Views,” and you can actually see the steady decline of his work since he decided to be a profit-based brand instead of a true artist.

Kendrick knew about the kind of person Drake is behind the scenes. Kendrick has openly spoken about how toxic the industry is, and we live in a day and age where we are seeing celebs (Diddy, R Kelly, Bill Cosby, Danny Masterson, Harvey Weinstein, Dan Schneider just to name a few) are being held accountable for their actions. Many of these people had rumors about their behavior swirling for YEARS and it’s now being confirmed as true. Drake’s reckoning is coming, and Kendrick is gonna end up on the right side of history.

He was ambitious enough to hang out with people he didn't like to achieve his dream when he was small, but the moment he got big he was conscious enough to cut those ties. It's not that out of stretch. People do it all the time in corporate settings. You put up with shitty boss during work, don't hang out with him outside of work as much as you can, the moment you got a promotion or better position in the same industry but different company, you completely cut ties from that person bcs you know what kind of person they are.

I work for a print shop. We print album covers, cd and dvd jewel case art, vhs and cassette tape insert and video game covers and related items. We printed, folded and glued 55,000 DAMN record sleeves for the initial run, if you don’t know, that’s an enormous amount. 3 months after release they ordered another 265,000 pieces. In the end we produced over a million. It’s the most album covers I’ve done for a single title in my 22 years of production print work.

The funniest thing is Drake ever thinking he was on a higher level than K dot. I'm a 26 yo woman and Drake has disgusted me for a long time (for the very things that Kdot has put the public on in very recent events) but I will admit that I did like him and his music when I first got into hip hop as a teen. I eventually grew out of it, even though some songs are very catchy, club-worthy type. Kendrick is in a completely different level! Like, that's just absurd to even question.

Just not sure about Kendrick's Mask Off line, I can't see that at a diss it seems to me like he's talking about himself and how he got commercial while doing only conscious albums, that he got the braids accepted on TV and the hood to the table, that the industry doesn't know how to rate him because he's the perfect package. I doubt he threw all of these compliments at Drake. Would love to hear people chip in on this one.

As a low key hip hop fan, 2013, this is when mumble rap and generic cars, money and s*x rappers vs the real lyricists rappers became black and white. In my opinion, Eminem drew that line between them.
