I met my husband in the Philippines in 1984. While he was there, he lost his passport and 25, 000,00 dollars in it at the wet market. A seven years old girl found it and gave it to her mother and her mother told her to follow the American man with a checkered shirt and give it him. The girl holds my husband's hand trying to get his attention, but my husband kept shaking her off thinking that she was a beggar without even looking at her. Finally, when he looks at her, the little girl handed him the wallet, to his surprised, it was then he realized that the girl saves him with what he would have been lost. I was upset that he didn't even buy her a piece of dress with the girl's effort. It is a very proud feeling that we Filipinos, despite being look down, having all these kinds of hardship in life and being called names like Monkey, we maintain our kindness, humility, resilient and above all, putting God first. Sure, there's always bad apples among us, as in every race in the world, but the majority of us, the God fearing is well embedded by our grandparents, parents and elderly around us, and that is what makes us unique in the world.
