Agora1 What you call “White liberal garbage” is a lot more deep than that. There is this massive issue in our modern Western Communities called “Class Struggle”... You can continue to ignore it now, but eventually you will be forced to confront class sooner or later. You may as well understand the issues of class now, before you are forced to, when the problems of the class struggle have overcome the whole society. Class struggle is not just “white liberal garbage”. Most of those who are in the working class are POC.

The movie underused the premise of being small, it actually ends up having very little impact on the characters after the first half hour. Instead we get a depressing day to day of Damon, an annoying relationship with the Vietnamese character, and finally it’s just about its climate change message. The movie has no real climax and ends on a whimper. Avoid it, overly long and boring.

The original plot idea was genius and the first third of the movie is done SO WELL. But then the movie takes an abrupt turn and becomes a completely different movie that has nothing whatsoever to do with the original synopsis. It feels like two separate movies that have been mashed together. The first part is about people downsizing, and then the second part is a completely different movie that just has a few objects that are larger than normal. The fact that they are downsized becomes entirely irrelevant to the movie (which could have been the goal perhaps, but was still poorly executed either way). Everything, from the story to the new characters, just feels painfully out of place and doesn't in any way compliment the first part of the movie. I was really disappointed with this one.

Hong Chau's character is a litmus test - she speaks and behaves accurately to many Asian immigrants without softening it to be palatable, and if you judge her to be a caricature too quickly then you are actually exposing your own haughty prejudice as she is revealed to be the deepest and most complexly layered person in the film. I'm half Asian-American born from an Asian immigrant father btw. I think this very human character is one of the most refreshing things I've seen in a movie for quite some time. A lesson on superficial diversity espousers and how they are so often too keen to react hypocritically toward anyone that doesn't assimilate to their own comfort. That is precisely the true message of this movie.

Well put. Yes it just makes me cringe hearing a white women say that it is “off tonally” and “over the top” She really shows herself to be ignorant of what Asians should be like. We don’t all fit her mold of this westernized version of Asians that she thinks we should be. Hong Chau’s character along with her “over the top” “tonally off” accent is 100 accurate of a Vietnamese refugee. I thought the movie was horrible, I saw it yesterday and was struggling to not walk out. It was boring, the plotline was lackluster and anticlimactic, there was too much dialogue that in places that didn't need it, unfinished scenes, and again really boring. The concept and Idea of this movie is good I feel like the Director could have done so much more with a plot like this. overall I'd give this a 2/10.

I’m also amazed how little they used the visuals of being small! Almost immediately after shrinking they move the location to a small village so everything is in proportion... and being small barely comes up after that. You know what would have been better? If this had been a TV series. It has too much plot, too many themes and too many characters for the time allowed. If we'd had the chance to watch the characters experience some smaller-stake events in Leisureland, and gradually expand into the deeper environmental message, it could have been a great binge-able miniseries like Westworld.

This movie is hands down one of the worse movies I've ever seen in my life. I sat through the entire movie waiting for something to happen and suddenly, the credits appear. There literally is no underlying plot. The downsizing aspect of the movie also completely disappears because halfway into the movie the real world never comes back up, its just the small world which makes everything seem proportional and normal. Downsizing literally did nothing whatsoever except to give a few 'laughs' at the beginning of the film. The characters were also abysmally bad. Who thought that having the Vietnamese woman be a main character was a good idea? That shit was extremely obnoxious. I thought at least Matt Damon would come in stronger but the character he portrayed was just so bland. I honestly thought this was supposed to be a kids movie which would very much work if it weren't for the continuous elderly phallus's thrown around the screen as well as the unnecessary swearing (where the joke in these scenes was literally the word being said) so it isn't even aimed towards young kids. Overall there is absolutely no substance in this movie and to think someone who has probably studied cinematography enough to become a director and made this piece of garbage fucking astounds me.

The story is of a man who is constantly in a downward spiral. from Dr to therapist, from big to little, his big house to the little apartment, to the original village, to finally the hole. Even his neighbor noted, "nothing ever works it for this guy." It's when it comes his love, he makes a conscious decision to move upward. Granted it was long, but people seem to have been waiting for the movie to "do something" when it was, just subtility. I don't think it was terrible. I thought there were interesting angles to socioeconomic differences. Also, a few fun parts.

It's not a satire. It's not overstuffed with ideas. In fact, it's a pretty simple story; a man upends his life for what he believes will be the better, but things don't work out that way. The rest unfolds from there. It's that simple, but people like Christy are overthinking it. Downsizing is one of the best of 2017. And Hong Chau's Oscar-worthy performance is heartfelt, funny, and nuanced.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed because that first trailer made it look like a light hearted comedy, instead it was a very heavy drama with smack in your face political statements of you're always gonna be defined and classified by the amount of money you have. And there will always be drugs no matter where you go. Did anyone else get a Doc Hollywood vibe? The Vietnamese chick I HATED her character. Based on the score, I know I was supposed to love her but she was bad for him and I hated the ending because of her. The ending was weird and I just hated it. It felt like I was watching two different movies of which I liked the first one, but as soon as the neighbor was introduced I felt it was a different movie and I kinda checked out at that point. This movie was supposed to change at about the halfway point... I was supposed to show the two different worlds, of what LeisureLand had created. It was more than just a plastic movie, that it could have been made into. The movie makers, hid this other side of this movie, in the trailers. It was billed as just a commentary of the aspect of going small, but instead broadened into a social commentary on class struggle & those who serve in the “small” economy. There was actually a class struggle aspect of DownSizing. That was the point of the Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chau) character & why she had to be such a hard, tough & no nonsense personality. And yes, she is normally NOT the type of person that the Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) character, was ever supposed to be drawn to. Extraordinary times, bring out extraordinary decisions, for the protagonist. Get with the program panel.

Abigayil, how so? How does his comment reflect this movie's existence? Regardless of his views on politics, the movie itself abruptly switches midway tonal and plot for no real reason...and then just ends. The movie didn't know what it wanted to be. Whoever cut the trailer made it a bit misleading, because you expect/anticipate one thing but end up with something else...and if it was actually done well, I wouldn't mind at all. But it isn't. It's a mess after the first act.

Your comment about Charlie Kaufman is exactly what I thought of. The kind of films he and Michel Gondry were making 10 years ago. They usually had an odd sci-fi idea, but really they were still movies about normal things like love, etc. I can see why a lot of people didn't like it, it does shift a third or half way through, but at the same time I can enjoy the ideas it brings forward. People are expecting an all out Honey I Shrunk the Kids comedy, but it is really more of a thought-provoking, poignant movie, though there are some funny bits.

You guys are really clueless. This was, overall, a very rare gem of a comedy in terms of the themes it tries to express, namely, how living a virtuous life surpasses every physical or metaphysical bigness. Every human yearns to change life. But how? More than ever, nowadays, people will say beauty or art will change life, and maybe even more commonly money, power, or erotic love. Moreover, on the otherhand, whenever Hollywood or the media portrays virtue or goodness, it's feeble, hackneyed and undesirable. But, here is a Hollywood movie, by Alexander Payne, which says, virtue is the way to changing life. That's why Ngoc Lan hands Paul a Bible just before he departs into the tunnels to save his own skin, mirroring Sonya in Crime and Punishment who gives Raskolnikov a wooden cross before he turns himself in. Although I won't say this film was as effective as it could have been, I definitely commend it for taking a risk to express a very important truth that is seldom touched upon.

Should I watch it or should i forget about it and move on? It's a rare case of time wasting vs intrigue. Finally saw this movie, since its in Netflix right now. The downsizing concept would have been perfect for a "Love Death + Robots" tv series where the theme of all the episodes is surrounded by the technology of shrinking people. You could play out all the different scenarios this idea lends itself. Instead, we get this movie that tries to glue together three of these scenarios in a not so glamorous fashion. The relationship with Ngoc Lan Tran seems rushed, the pacing was all over the place, and the tonals shifts between what each character brougbt was jarring. If we want the movie to be about Paul choosing a life with Ngoc and giving up the bunker - lets focus less on how the downsizing procedure and creation was formed and spend time focusing on how life on Earth is worsening and provide more efficient obstacles for the two main characters to actually build a believable relationship. The movie Inception doesnt explain how the dream linking machine works, just that you can. Avatar doesnt spend too much time on how to turn into a blue person, just that you can. So why did i watch and learn so much about how they dealt with teeth this movie?! If we want to focus this movie on social and economic inequalities, then why do we give so much screen time to the Dusan character? Why do we give Paul a wife for her to leave like right away. I like the idea of humans inventing something that we think will only have positive consequences, but in the shadows its revealed how the poor still suffer, or suffer even more than before. I think Matt Damon is the perfect fit for a sci-fi film like this. He'd be the main character that can help bridge the gap between these inequalities - but you'd have name the movie something a lot cooler and futuristic sounding. Something like "Elysium". You could have also kept Kristin Wiig in this movie and kept a more comedic toned movie. Forget the social inequalities, lets make it a rom com. Maybe set up a scenario where Audrey backs out and Paul resents her intially for this. Audrey still visits Paul, she eventually takes him out to the real world periodically and they have to deal with very comical situations do to his size. They eventually rekindle their love for each other and learn to accept each other's decisions. Then at the end of the movie, its revealed that Audrey didn't back out last minute, and instead she was dying of some incurable disease that disqualified her from the downsizing operation. Paul finds all this out and is met with extreme guilt for getting mad at her initially. But then he realizes she did this all out of love and he reminsces about all the time they were able to spend together before she passed. Wow, Hollywood here I come. Im not saying any of my ideas are perfect lr any good - but they are all better than the crap i just watched.

I thought this movie was just utterly fantastic & the relentess quirky twists & turns it takes were just astonishing; I thought the cleaning lady with one leg was just exceptional & stole my heart the same way Whoopi Goldberg stole my heart in Ghost; But I thought the final act was just dire watching paint dry. I wasjust terrible.

It's an ok movie to me. One group of people had a notion that the movie would somewhat had this Flinstone's vibe (or the Wow factor) and another group of people probably figured that the movie had this realistic side (or the movie HER) while living amongst technological improvement.

I loved the "movies!" Not a typo. It really felt like I watched more than one movie. They were good though!

I enjoyed it but I also didn’t go in with any idea of what to expect. It felt like it was a slice of life story, albeit with a touch of sci-fi. The combo kept things interesting for me. I like the the main character found purpose & fulfillment in his life in the end. As for the environmental message, it was more of an excuse for tiny people but failed to deliver any “let’s fix the earth” message. Simply “live life to the fullest” came through. I feel sorry for the people in the bunker. I do wonder how they turn out as it seems one of their heads is a nut job, lady.

Agree 100% I was expecting this dumb comedy of how they use big things in small ways. But as soon as it got to the community I thought, what is the conflict going to be for this? Birds? And then his wife bails and he gets depressed and well from that moment on it didn’t even seem like a small world. I can dream a way better movie with that type of idea in mind and I think I’m just going to do that now....

To those who still want to see it: See it. What do you have to lose :) I thought it was great! Great in the sense that it was entertaining and an experience. It went in a totally different direction then you wanted it to based on the concept of 'downsizing' but hey, it was ok. Entertaining and cute, that's all :) still glad I dragged myself to the movies and saw it! Was it what I was expecting? No. But whatever :)

Not sure why so much criticism about this move. It's actually a pretty good movie and it touches on a few points that should make you stop and think about some pretty important things. If you have a free night...watch the movie without having expectations...and I think you will not only enjoy this movie but you will also rethink some of your personal priorities. 😎

This movie was awful. At least the first half was (had to stop watching, and I don’t do that). The rave scene halfway through was WAY too long and then that Vietnamese character was so cringe and pointless that after what seemed like hours of day-dreaming while she was on the screen, I snapped out of it and asked my wife “uh ok can we go get tacos or something.”
