In skating, there's Midori Ito right before her in the 1988 Calgary games who landed the triple axel in competition. After Tonya, there's Mao Asada who was very graceful, very tiny, very flexible, landed the triple axel, triple toe combination in the 2005 World Junior Championship. The same competition that Yuna Kim was in. After them, there were only a handful of skaters who landed the triple axel in competition. Tonya wasn't that great skating-wise. What was interesting was the story because for the first time, realism is shown in this movie about figure skating. There are rich people in the skating world, but many are ordinary, what's extraordinary is her extremely hard and unfortunate background leading to her meeting the wrong person who makes the wrong friend. In the past, Hollywood portrayed figure skating very wrongly, as a result non-skaters treated skating like it's easy, like it's a farce. Don't get me wrong, many skaters do like Blades of Glory (I personally don't), it just adds to the fact that this parody about the skating world causes people to even not take the sport of figure skating seriously. I, Tonya, however showed skating in a very real light. It shows exactly what it really takes to actually succeed in figure skating. And this movie shows how hard it really is to be in competitive figure skating. In reality, there were a lot of moms that were like Allison Jennings' character. Heck, in the NCCP course, one thing we went over is when you see a parent being abusive to their child what do we do? I mean now, since we seen these things too much, we already know to call the authorities. Well of course many parents aren't that extreme like LeVona Harding. But abuse and resentment do happen. Skaters do act up or get angry when they have a bad practice. Jeff Gillooly demonstrates why no one dates when they compete, and even if they do, you really don't see them date outside the skating world. Outsiders just don't understand a skater's world. They are fun, but they won't get the things we do or the sacrifices that we make. There are many stories of others either quitting skating as soon as they meet someone outside the rink or becoming rebellious after meeting someone because of the fun of dating and the extreme pressure and control they had before they met someone at school. Moms and coaches do control a lot of skater's lives. When skaters pick an outsider, it's usually someone the complete opposite, like a bad boy. And never ends well. I find Tonya's coach a little refrained, which is the right portrayal. Many coaches are like that, but at the same time, some coaches....you can hear them yelling across the rink. Some coaches would yell while the skater is in the middle of their program during practice. So skating isn't quite that dainty, it's actually pretty rough and pretty hard. One thing you'll hear from many elite athletes is skating is hard, we just make it look easy for you to see. I think I, Tonya makes a pretty real portrayal of the world of figure skating and a pretty close portrayal to the source material. One thing I, Tonya forgot to mention is skaters move from place to place all the time for practice. Many national level skaters skate at several different rinks, and cross train with many sports specialist. And her life after she moved out is very real with many amateur athletes in our world. Sewing costumes, working several different jobs, and working minimal wage after competitive life wasn't successful. THAT'S pretty real (well nowadays there's of course some who opt to skate and school at the same time like Michelle Kwan which is a much smart path....). She's not an exception in the skating world, her dysfunctional family is and her boyfriend and Shawn Eckhardt is. But everything else, pretty realistic of the skating world.

Midori did not attempt a 3A at Calgary. She did the very 1st ladies 3A in international competition at the 1988 NHK.

This should have won best picture at the Oscars. Far, far better than "The Shape of Water". "I, Tonya" is the "Goodfellas" of skating moves, probably even of all sports movies. (Oops, one of the reviews just mentioned "Goodfellas". Glad I'm not the only one who noted the comparison.)

Rick Francis, excellent comment. Actually Midori started it by landing the 1st triple axel by a woman in 1988 at the NHK. When Midori skated her 1989 worlds exhibition skate, Scott Hamilton said at the end of her skate "witnessing the birth of a new age in figure skating". Tonya helped to push the change forward by being the 1st american lady and 2nd lady overall to land the triple axel in competition in 1991 at US nationals. Their athleticism is unequaled even today oct 3 2018.

Katerina Witt's most difficult jump was the triple loop which is ranked lower than a triple Axel. She was able get her Olympic eligibility status reinstated for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games and placed 7th over Harding's 8th.

I agree with Christie about the music, certain tracks have been so overused this decade and this movie uses so many of them that it broke the camel's back for me. Hollywood seriously needs an industry-wide agreement to retire these trope songs forever and update the library.

While I loved the movie, I wasn't irked by the song choices AT ALL. However, the CGI took me out of the movie every time when it was extremely obvious that they pasted the head of someone else onto an ice skater. The uncanny valley just thrusted into the foreground. What I feel would have done it for me would have been more closeups cut with wider, possibly, audience seat shots than the ambition of moving up close and far without the cuts. I admire the photographer's ambition to get on the ice with the actresses, but if you can't make it into a seamless shot matching photography, it's best to try it on another movie that has a bigger timespan to work it in post. Other than that, it's really great. Solid work from the cast, intriguing direction, and great traditional editing. I think the songs used in the movie were great because it added that extra oomph and energy to the film coupling with it being a specific time (range) piece.

My only real issue is they should have gotten someone else to play Tonya and Jeff when they were 15. Margott should have shown up after high school because she just looks like an adult with braces. As someone who saw a lot of Tonya after this incident as a guest panelist on TruTVs The Smoking Gun, Robbie nails a lot of her mannerisms down. Especially in the present. The song choices didn't bother me as much due to the many tones the film manages to juggle. Thought The Chain was used a lot more appropriately here than in Guardians Vol. 2. Wasn't expecting this to have as much depth and comedy then it has. And definitely wasn't expecting all the heart breaking domestic violence. Seems to be the year of redemption for two big punching bags. I would rate this right around the same as The Disaster Artist.

Randomfools absolutely agree on finding more age appropriate actor/actress for the teen years. IIRC Robbie was 26 when it was filmed and Tonya was 23 during the incident so that would have been fine. Tonya was never a skinny girl either and I thought the comment on her pear shape was laughable given that Harding’s about 5’1” and always had powerful thighs and Robbie is tall and willowy. The very short skirt parts of the costumes that Harding wore to lengthen her legs make Robbie look even taller and skinnier.

I disagree with Christy Lemire on the subject of the music -- I liked it. It'd been a long time since I'd heard some of those songs and I enjoyed them again. Didn't feel anyone was telling me to feel a certain way. I just liked the songs . . . wished I'd written some of them . . . or at least helped with the melodies. I started to like Tonya when I saw her on that TV show World's Dumbest. She's likeable. Also, she paid a dear price for picking such a loser to fall in love with. I am sad she can't ever even coach skating. She obviously loved the sport.

My prejudices prior to this movie, my guilt, Sebastian Stans' chameleon-like portrayals...I didn't recognize him in this, or The Bronze (after seeing him in The Martian), This was a fantastic movie, beautifully done. sergio vela I stand corrected on the "US" part - they do say it in the movie. Guess after hearing a lot of people thinking she was the first woman to do it after seeing this, I thought the movie had it wrong. But nope, I'm wrong. Disagree on your second point though - the movie itself states it's based on interviews from multiple people, not just Tonya's. The movie also states they're often contradictory... but it's still essentially a single narrative with storytelling choices decided by the filmmakers. For example, they clearly point out there is uncertainty in the _extent_ of the abuse with Tonya's relationships with her mother and husband (which I appreciated), but they clearly want us to know there WAS abuse. With "the incident", they clearly want us to know it's uncertain the extent to which her husband knew. But not once do they even question if Tonya knew or not. Throughout the film characters call out each other's BS or say "no, this actually happened". But not once here - no FBI investigator chimes in, not even Bobby Cannavale's character, who seems perfectly setup for this. They want you, the audience, to sympathize with her. This is a narrative choice. It feels like they chickened out, but that's just me. I actually don't hate I, Tonya; I thought Margot Robbie in particular was great.

Cas Saucedo I agree we don't know what really happened, but neither do the filmmakers, which is kinda my point. They still needed to decide what to include in the movie & what not to. Them choosing not to cast Tonya's involvement in doubt was a decision. "everyone has their own truth" for me is too big of a leap to say that's the theme of the film. Each of the main characters have selfish reasons to not present the full truth, which I think is why they have the 'uncertainty' scenes. But the main points of the film are to 1) hold the audience accountable (and tabloids, and media in general) as voyeurs who sensationalize and exploit Tonya's life for entertainment, and 2) feeling sympathy for her. I agree, I think the abuse stuff and figure skating association snob stuff is probably true, but it also feeds into the feeling sympathy point I think they're trying to make (which is also why I think they don't question Tonya's involvement in "the incident"). But that's all just my take, I respect everyone's opinions.

Ok, as an ex figure skater, who suffers from asthma as well, I had nothing but respect for tonya. I always felt she needed to work on her artistry. However, what an athlete. So difficult to reach that level with little support, finicial limitations and physical ailments. Before Nancy's misfortune, if you watch old clips of her skating, you'll realize she lacked passion. It was as if she was obligated to skate living out her legally blind mom's dreams. Next, because of this incident, Nancy became one of the Only highest paid Olympic skaters in history! Plus, as a silver medalist! We don't know if she would had even made the 1994 team had it not been for the incident. She had a tendency for cracking under the pressure and falling. Just watch her previous Olympic debut in France. She's not the best and never was. This sad and terrible incident made people pay attention to a sport, they would normally never care for and made Nancy a house hold name. In honesty? She can almost thank Tanya's ex husband. As odd as that might seem, look up the salaries of All the other previous skaters before and after her. She's made it on the Red carpet, given designer dresses, and the "Gold" treatment after. At a time the Internet was but a mare baby, social media was not even a hatched idea, and This was the News! This was the real time soap opera played on everyone's tube.

I'm of to minds about this movie. It can't seem to decide whether to be sympathetic to Tonya because of her near-Dickensian upbringing, socio-economic distress, and class prejudice she faced, or condescending as Hell. Nor can it quite decide whether it's a comedy or not. On a side note, I noticed that "I, Tonya" changes the music Tonya used in her Olympic performances. She actually used the theme from "Jurassic Park," as I recall. Perhaps the makers of this film could not get permission to use it.

An anachronism in the film was when Tonya's former coach returned to her after the 1992 Winter Olympic Games to inform her that it was just announced that the next Winter Olympic Games will take place two years later when, in fact, the decision was made back in 1988.

Katarina Witt never landed a triple axel! Officially, 8 female skaters have been credited with landing a triple axel. Midori Ito of Japan was the first to do so at 1989 Worlds. Tonya Harding (USA); Yukari Nakano (Japan); Ludmila Nelidina (Russia); Mao Asada (Japan); Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (Russia); Rika Kihara (Japan); and Mirai Nagasu (USA). In addition, Kimmie Meissner of USA was credited with landing a triple axel at U.S. Nationals, but it was kind of wonky and perhaps underrotated, so she's rarely cited for the feat.

OMW omeia. you are very close in your triple axel crediting, a few minor additions. as of aug 25 1988 8 women have landed the triple axel in international competition. Midori was the 1st but she landed the 1st official triple axel at the NHK trophy competition in Japan in 1988. Kimmie landed the triple axel at US nationals but it was not international competition so not officially credited. Three women have successfully landed the 3A at the winter olympic games. Midori at Albertville in 1992, Mao at Vancouver in 2010 and now Mirai in South Korea this year.

well, the description of exactly how Harding made it to the 94 Olympics is not entirely true. After Kerrigan ( whose father ran a Zamboni on top of two other jobs to pay for Kerrigan's ice rink rental) was whacked on the knee, Harding won National's which made her make it to the Olympics. Had the whack heard around the world not happened Yamaguchi would most likely have won the 2nd choice to the Olympics.

It looks like Margot does a good job and she is a phenomenal actress, but maybe she is too attractive for the role. They didn't make her look hard enough. Charlize Theron in Monster as an example

I have to totally agree with Christy! One of my biggest pet peeves in movies is when a generic soundtrack is used as opposed to interesting music choices! It sometimes even ruins dramatic/exciting scenes! Boring music choices I would assume are used in commercial films most of the time to appeal to rhe masses who only listen to the radio and aren't really into anything but hits!

Fantastic movie! I couldn't get over how completely TERRIBLE Tonya's mother was. Absolutely the worst kind of abusive stage mom trying to live vicariously through her daughter in the most vicious and cold-hearted way possible. The only problem I had with this movie is that it assumes Tonya Harding was ignorant of the attack when past interviews and evidence have indicated she was involved or at least had knowledge before or after the fact.

Honestly Margo is too hot for the role. Established. But who should have REALLY played her? Amy Adams. Exact same facial structure.

HitchensImmortal I noticed some comments on other message boards saying the same thing -- that Amy Adams would've been a better choice to play Tonya. Physically, she looks more like Tonya, but Amy wouldn't be that convincing playing a teenager or someone in her early 20s. She's also not that great at playing a crude, working class person with below-average intelligence. I didn't think she was convincing as a working-class person in "The Fighter." I thought she was terrific in "American Hustle" and "Arrival" and other roles where she's supposed to be someone who's intelligent.

I'm going to watch this. But if it turns out to be some kind of "Poor Me. It's everyone else's fault.", I'm going to be furious. I'm really disgusted with the growing culture of blameshifting and victimhood.

O._o Not giving away any spoilers, but this movie is very sympathetic to Tonya. If you go into it knowing that it's a dark comedy that makes fun of the main characters having conflicting versions of the same story (they all look like liars at some point), then you might like the movie. Allison Janney and Margot Robbie are terrific, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get Oscar nominations, but their characters are played so over-the-top. I prefer more realistic performances like Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf in ""Lady Bird."

The film does not exonerate Harding and it does not justify her actions. It shows her as tragic character who went from one abusive situation to another.

Side comment, re: Sebastian Stan - the Winter Soldier was superior to Civil War, at least when it comes to repeat viewings. Also, didn't he appear in a (bad) skating movie with Melissa Rauche (Big Bang Theory)?
