I guess I'm in the minority here, but I did love the first Resident Evil movie. It was a fun action flick with an okay story, relateable enough characters (I was upset when Michelle Rodriguez's character died, so they must have done something right) and great choreography and effects. Ofcourse all the sequels were absolute garbage, but the first was good.

Part of the problem with video game adaptations is that they keep picking all the wrong games to adapt in the first place. Like, who the fuck asked for Blood Rayne? It was already a mediocre game to begin with. Mario Bros doesn't work because there's no story to adapt. Doom--again, THERE'S NO STORY THERE. The game was about running down corridors shooting up random demons. The plot didn't fucking matter. You didn't play the game for the plot. Prince of Persia was finally at least a half decent pick, and lo and behold, we got at least a half decent movie, but what Hollywood should really be adapting is stuff like Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Warcraft, StarCraft. KOTOR could easily surpass the original Star Wars trilogy with how awesome the characters, story, and plot twist is. MGS already is basically a blockbuster movie with some gameplay segments in between. Mass Effect has created a new sci-fi universe that rivals anything in recent memory from Hollywood. The Warcraft movie is shaping up to be potentially epic, and knowing the expansive lore of Warcraft, it has strong potential to rival the LOTR universe if done right. I think the Warcraft movie could very well be the turning point for video game adaptations, and once it's proven to Hollywood that they can be financially and critically successful, we'll start seeing them taking the source material more seriously and having as many VG adaptations being pumped out as there are comic book movies every year.

Hit man story kill the target the end.
@Ketraar9 жыл бұрын
Derpalon THe problem of the examples you mention like ME, KOTOR, etc they have HUGE lore, some need multiple games to explain. Besides most of the story is made by the player anyway, which is impossible to portray in film. Hitman is actually the better choice for adaptation, its essentially a Bond meats Bourne type movie. The Hitman Films fall short due to lack of care, not because they are hard to make. One reason I think some of these fail is the people making them a) dont care and just want the brand or b) have no clue about the original material. As I said in an other review, just take the Hitman Blood Money story and run than, its all there already.
@samponcho34129 жыл бұрын
+Derpalon The best games for adapting into movies are games with interesting concepts, rather than interesting stories. You need to think of games that can be easily summarized in one or two sentences, but that are still much deeper once you delve in. I'm sure I'll get flak for saying it, but I still think Halo could easily be the ideal template for video game movie. It has a layered story, but it's not too deep, long, or complex. Story driven games are too complicated. Mass effect is 20 hours - how the hell do you make that into a movie? The problem is also that the point is to make movies that sell people on the games and make people interested in learning more - people watch a 2 hour movie, and then say "Wow, I'd like to see the 5 hour version of this" if it works out. With long story based games, the only way to make a movie is to make it about a smaller story within the larger game - for example making a KOTOR movie about the mandalorian wars. But, that would never be successful, because only people who have already played KOTOR would be interested in that. tl;dr games that are rich thematically, but have simple storylines will make the best movies in the future.
@Ketraar9 жыл бұрын
Galaith100 Well 47 is not boring, its a character like Max Rockatansky, they serve as vehicles to convey a story revolving around them. As far as action goes, sure you can make it an action movie, an action movie does not require shoot'em'ups ceanes all the time. You can have the movie build up to a great end fight/action finale, by using more suspense/adventure "mechanics", like the M:I series, with infiltration, scouting. Again, go check out the Blood Money story on how to make a good Hitman movie.
@Derpalon9 жыл бұрын
Ketraar I disagree. Adapting games with multiple choices decided by the player would be no different than how many anime get adapted from visual novels with multiple branching story routes. The producers would obviously have to decide which route would best be portrayed on film, and build a character around that. Also, while many of these games are of course 20+ hour expansive experiences, much of that content is not actual story, but often a lot of corridors and landscapes filled with "gamey" content that you wouldn't ever need to portray in film, like endless hordes of baddies to shoot down, the occasional puzzle-solving segment, driving the Mako around aimlessly on open worlds in search of minerals, navigating from point A to point B for your next objective. If you cut most of that fat out and just stick to the key events of the story, you could easily refine the first ME game down to a 2-hour movie, as you could also do with many other games. The goal isn't to make a complete recreation of the game on the big screen; obviously as with any translation between mediums, some things would have to be changed or cut because they simply don't translate well. Regarding Hitman in particular, perhaps I'm just biased by my personal lack of interest in the franchise, but I never felt any inclination for a movie adaptation, and I've never exactly heard Hitman praised for having a standout story in comparison to other games. Maybe it is better than others have stated, and maybe it could work well as a movie if producers cared more about its source material. At the end of the day though I think a game that already has a rich story and characters to work with would certainly be easier and better to adapt than one where the story is so thin that you have to invent new characters and plot points to fill in the void where gameplay would normally take its place.

The guy who said that the movie does a good job at portraying the game needs to do more homework. Here is what the Hitman games are like. You stand on a corner, kill a guy when he walks past you, take his clothes, stuff the dead body in a box, continue to your target, listen to funny conversions from passerbys, and then kill your target. All this is done in a stealthy fashion. There are no all out shoot outs in every level nor car chases. It's a stealth game. This movie on the other hand does not focus on stealth but the all out shoot outs.

Ok, to be fair, I haven't played the games but I suspect "Agent 47" has no personality outside being a badass. Let's face it, no one's really tried to make a good video game adaptation, for a number of reasons. On the movie side, studios pick properties that are really popular regardless of how good or bad the narrative is. On the gaming side, most games just don't have good stories in them. Writers are often brought in when the project is almost complete and asked to peace a story together from a loosely connected set peaces.

You can make a decent movie BASED on most video games. Take Skyrim for example- There can be a bunch of people- the Dragonborn, a Forsworn, a Thief, etc going on a major protect-the-world-from-Alduine-apoclypse quest and they could enlist the help of the Graybeards to fight the army of the Draugr, etc. As long as there's character development, it would be a good movie.

The thing about video games is that the narratives are usually crafted to unfold very slowly over a period of say 9-15 hours generally. To fit that into a movie block is challenging so I feel like thus far the people making these movies have essentially said "fuck it" and throw out all the plot. But yeah, it's not that they're incompatible ideas they just keep DOING IT WRONG. I saw this being bad from day 1.

I've really tried to think of a good video game movie and the best I can come up with is the Silent Hill movie was pretty good, the Prince of Persia movie was fine, and the Resident Evil movies are fun (I'm a little soft on RE because when I studied abroad in college one of my classes had a project where they had to reenact a movie scene in English and preform it at the end and one group picked the scene where Alice says "I'm not on the menu" or whatever to Wesker and I thought it was great) Actually I honestly kind of enjoyed the DOOM movie when it came out in theaters
@KainErrow9 жыл бұрын
I always wonder how bad a movie has to be in it's first half to make a reviewer walk out of the theater. I mean, there are movies that are so bad that you're compelled to watch them, so where would a movie fall that after however much time is invested in the first half is enough to make the reviewer pack up? It's actually very interesting to me that 'True Detective, season 2' managed to lock in 'What the flick?!' to the very end. I wouldn't have blamed them for having a cap to their 4th review that said, "Nope," we're done, there's other programs to watch. I wouldn't have minded watching Ben, Alonzo, Christy, and Matt review Penny Dreadful or Peaky Blinders, 2 shows I really loved in their ongoing seasons.

I think it's hard to make a good video game movie because games are inherently repetitive, you've got your gameplay mechanics and you need to stretch that out to an hour and a half. Games spend twenty minutes to one minute gameplay to story respectively (an awkward sentence but that's about as coherent as I can make it without thinking too much, I'm tired, sorry) and in almost every game the story is just an excuse to get you to do stuff, so unless you're doing a Spec Ops the Line or The Last of Us where the story is the selling point you're not given alot to worth with you're going to struggle to find things to do. At the end of the day the source material's just too shallow. It's not true of every game that the story's shallow, like I said some have great stories, to rival some really good films even, but by and large it's just there to tell you where to shoot.
