I stopped raw oils in April 2021. I've been set free of greasy clothes, glasses, and pillowcases. I wear my hair in a wash n go. It so easy to manage. I cleanse, condition and style twice a week because I workout daily. My hair is more hydrated and my curls are poppin'. I'm not going back to the raw oils/butters.

I feel like people are hanging on to that 5 hour hair routine and the oils and butters the way some people hang on to failing relationships. They don't want to believe they've been wasting their time, they believe that whole "Anything worth having is going to take hard work" mentality applies to all parts of life including hair care. But here's the thing: we need oxygen to live, and unless you have a medical condition, it's also the easiest thing that we do! So easy we rarely think about it. Haircare can be easy and even enjoyable if we allow it! As soon I as heard that I didn't have to do all the extra stuff and could shampoo my hair at least once a week if not more I was like, "say less!" I love washing my hair, and knowing that I can wash, style and set my hair in 90 minutes or less I was sold. I've been doing it for about 2-3 months now and I will never go back. I do still do deep conditioners, but because I really enjoy it. When I don't do it, my hair still comes out looking great. I also love being able to enjoy touching my hair and leaning on things, and putting my glasses on my head without fear of oil stains. I will never go back.You and Kim along with the black girl curls ladies along with a few other youtubers really liberated me and I'm so grateful :)

I think you really nailed it with the tension that can come from being an influencer in the natural hair space and not being a licensed cosmetologist. I'm glad there's more licensed cosmetologists showing up in this space as well as natural hair influencers practicing hydrating hair care practices. I didn't know the damage my butters and oils usage was causing. I did not even have the headspace, the mindset that I could even wear and maintain a wash n go. I don't blame anyone but whenever people have some truth to share its always accompanied by opposition and confusion. I can't imagine how hard it was then to share what you shared and especially with all the push back now with Raw oil and butter use. I know you mentioned Abena who follows these practices and I am glad you learned of people like her sooner and were sharing about her and others. Just glad I know more now and continue to flourish in my hair journey. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.

Nice breakdown video of some of the common things said against removing raw oils from hair routines! I was actually shocked seeing some of the more vicious comments and ill wishes (why so determined to have people hair fall out) even on the older videos about this. I think you nailed it with it being fear. I think a lot of people also just react negatively to judgement and feel like they’re being judged for their own habits even when people try to speak primarily about themselves. (I mean some people are judgy but yknow what I mean haha)

I really appreciate this video. I was skeptical at first bc a lot of influencers push using products from the same 3 brands which I questioned intent. I can't believe there are only 3 brands people can use. On your channel I like that you still experiment and call out well formulated products are ok. It's about simplicity and not packing on every product at once over and over. I am low oil no butters and have really enjoyed it

I find this conversation so interesting. The heated discussions about it, even more. Is this something relatively new? This raw oils and butters? I've been natural since 2006 and big chopped off 40+ years of heat damage this past May. My hair has never seen the hint of raw oils, butters, or food items (I prefer to eat the food instead, for sustenance... works way better for your health and hair). So I'm trying to understand why everyone is up in arms about oils and butters. If this is new school, and If you want to use them, use them. Those of us who don't, won't. There! Fixed it!! :)
@WhatTheKink3 жыл бұрын
New? Nah. lol. Remember when there weren’t a lot of products targeted toward naturals back in the early 2000s? People turned to DIY which for many included raw oils and butters. People also say that our ancestors used raw oils and butters so they feel it is a tradition. So, what is currently being said feels to some like an attack on tradition or at least the last decade or so of natural haircare.
@twomisfithippies97903 жыл бұрын
@@WhatTheKink Yes I remember the early 2000's for sure! Now that you mention it, the lack of products is actually what kept me in relaxers. In my immediate family, I never heard of or used raw oils and butters. All of the women (mother, cousins, aunties, grandmas and great grandmas) all wore wigs. They all still do. My cousin/aunties love living vicariously through my natural hair journey. They want weekly pictures of my progress. :) But with all of that said... I would say it's personal choice. I wonder at those who get irritated or confrontational at "other people's" hair. Interesting indeed.

I've been team no raw oils/butters since 2016. I finally linked oil/butter to my corn flake sized flakes and inflamed scalp. Cutting oil/butter out of my routine (and out of majority of my products) helped me with my seborrheic dermatitis. My hair is very close to tailbone length and dense. I wash my hair twice a week (with sulfate shampoos) and I don't struggle with the dryness people claimed I would struggle with. I think people are resistant to the no oils/butters idea is because it probably feels anti black to them. They also may struggle with internalized antiblackness because without that ever present layer of oil/butter lubricating their strands, they don't like the way their naked texture feels or looks. Pair that with YT personalities refusing to adequately clean their hair and being 'Cowash only'. They will literally apply oil to their scalps, "co wash" and then deep condition their still dirty hair with VISIBLE build up on their hairline. All on camera. To thousands of subscribers who don't know any better. I find those are the main people under every video that even mentions 'no oil/butter' being passive aggressive. It's interesting to witness tbh

Your hair looked fine in that video. Some days natural hair cooperates and sometimes it doesn't. Lord knows I've gone out many days with a wash-n-go that was less than optimal and that's putting it mildly! 🤪🤣 I made a comment years ago on a post in the LHCF, maybe it was 2006 or 2007, saying that I didn't use olive oil and shea butter and such in my hair and asked what the purpose for them was? That was the first and last time for many years that I made such a comment. The responses didn't change my mind toward using raw oils or butter but they did teach me how the natural hair community would come for you if your routine was different. I had people saying things like "Bald-headed newbies just need to keep their mouth shut and learn something before commenting in the forum." Mind you, I had never posted a pic in the forum so I was confused as to where that comment came from. So just for chits and giggles, I added a pic of my then APL hair and said "Sometimes a question just needs to be answered without judgment."🤣 🤣 I didn't bother to reply to the following post about how long and healthy my hair looked. I know it was messy but I was a kid at the time and that comment ticked me off because my question was sincere.

I finished my transition to relaxed to natural hair back in December 2016. So I from 2017 to April 2019 my hair was dry. I tried the LCO and the LOC method. I couldn’t understand why my hair was brittle and greasy. So I went to hairstylist conference in natural hair in my hometown (how to take care of natural hair). Like you said she explained there was already products formulated with oils so what was the point to add on more. Don’t get me wrong I love oils but to much in my hair was not beneficial for me. Since then I’ve been using a leave in and a cream when I don’t do wash n go. For my wash n go depending on my stocks leave in with gel or with a foam. I mostly do wash n go but I take break from time to time. I can honestly say that my hair has been healthier and it’s been easy to take care ( cleanse, condition and style on wash days)

When I went to my stylist in 2018 she asked me the same question about why I using raw oils and butters when my products already had them. I don’t miss oil on my pillow cases and headrest. My hair has grown since using this method and it’s been 8 months.

I still wear my styling fails also. I watched your video and was like yeah I hate oils too not realizing my leave in was basically oil and water. I was thinking more of coconut oil freezing and melting from lower to higher temperatures or Shea butter not smoothing in my hair, leaving clumps lol. Anyway, I got the full message eventually and ditched that leave in in favor of products with no or low oil. I think the pushback is a combination of fear, disbelief, and arrogance.

I put oils on my scalp for the nutrients, but never on the length of my hair because my sebum coats my strands. I don’t do “water only washing” either…I cleanse my scalp whenever I feel like it’s dirty( no conditioner and no deep conditioning ever), but I usually rinse almost everyday. Point is I do what I want, everyone should. If it’s working , why not.
